The American nuclear family is officially dead, according to a new analysis from the Pew Research Center — even if some Americans haven't accepted it. In 1970, nearly 70% of American adults ages 25 to 49 were living with a spouse and at least one child. "Family living arrangements are becoming more and more diverse in their composition," Carolina Aragão, one of the authors of the Pew report, told Insider. While married adults with kids are still the most common family arrangement, "they are far less common than they were in the past." We are a generation who spent the first half of our lives being breathlessly courted. Sure, every generation gets told some of those things, but not every generation believes it quite like we did. Love us or hate us, there are a lot of millennials, which means our tastes are important. (We millennials didn’t demand pay for our work back then.) I made sure to say it during job interviews, and placed it front and center on my résumé.

Damien Meyer | Afp | Getty ImagesAn increase in pension retirement age to 64 from 62 in France has sparked ongoing protests. The U.S. could be poised for a similar change with the Social Security retirement age. Today, that higher retirement age is still getting phased in. People born in 1960 and later now must wait until 67 to receive their full "retirement age" benefits. For example, if you are eligible for a $1,000 monthly benefit at full retirement age, you would get just $700 per month if you started at age 62.

The managers said Gen Zers lack technological skills, effort, and motivation. It's so bad that 27% said they've fired a Gen Z employee within the first month. About 40% of that group said it's because people in this age group lack technological skills. The same proportion of managers also felt Gen Z employees — those born between 1997 and 2012 — lack motivation and get "easily distracted." The tensions between the generations are so bad that some managers who found Gen Z challenging to work with said they fired a Gen Zer promptly after hiring.
Solari wasn't the only American to veer wildly between frugality and all-out spending sprees during the pandemic. In particular, younger people — Gen Z and millennials — have seen the early parts of their careers and critical years of their financial lives defined by the shifting sands of the pandemic economy. The strange pandemic-savings paradoxThe pandemic recession did not actually mean people had no money. The Fed found that the top quartile of earners added nearly $1.5 trillion to their savings through spending reductions, even as the pandemic consumed millennials and Gen Z's savings. If the mantra of the pandemic recession was giving everyday Americans money, the reaction is now to yank that back.

Millions of millennials could experience a midlife crisis over the next decade. But even if the midlife crisis persists among millennials, they're unlikely to respond to it the same way as prior generations. That said, there's some evidence that millennials' spending habits are actually a bit different than those of Gen X and boomers. So when the midlife crisis comes, millennials may respond by taking a big vacation rather than buying a sports car. The lower marriage rate among millennials is among the reasons they've also had fewer children than prior generations.
China's Gen Z is out to "rectify" the workplace, and they want their millennial bosses to give in. The Weibo hashtag "The post-2000s generation is rectifying the workplace" is a forum filled with Gen Z rage. The hashtag documents Chinese Gen Z rage in all its varied formsIt is unclear exactly how the hashtag started. At times, the posts on the Gen Z workers' threads devolve into rants about their "evil" millennial bosses. The rumblings from Gen Z, however, stand in stark contrast to narratives about Chinese millennials that have dominated popular culture.

Like a lot of millennials, Enrique Gonsalves is a victim of poor timing. For most millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, the path to homeownership has been fraught with pitfalls and false starts. Add it all up, and the homeownership rate among millennials is lagging that of previous generations. Compared with these generations, millennials have more debt, a lower net worth, and a worse chance of making more than their parents. Those factors, particularly the rise in student debt, have prevented millennials from getting a home.

The share of people in the US living in multigenerational households has gone up compared to decades prior. Money is the biggest reason to live in a multigenerational household, a Pew survey found. Many Gen Xers are unprepared to retire in their 60s, according to an INSIDER and Morning Consult survey. Almost half of Gen X respondents, defined as ages 38 to 53, said they have no money saved in a retirement account. The Gen Xers were the least likely generation to say they would save or invest an extra $1,000, instead using it to pay outstanding bills and debt. The full retirement age for Gen Xers is 67, at which point they can begin to claim Social Security benefits. These findings underscore a recent MetLife report, which found that 55% of Gen Xers said they were feeling either significantly or somewhat behind on their retirement-savings timeline and that 48% of Gen Xers were living paycheck to paycheck.
