Delta-8 THC, or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of more than 100 chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. That’s at least one or two students in every average-sized high school class who may be using delta-8. Most of the participants were about 17 years old, so the study may not fully represent how many younger teens are using delta-8. There has been a general concern that the number of students using delta-8 has been growing, according to an editorial published Tuesday alongside this study. Calls to America’s Poison Centers about delta-8 products spiked 82% from 2021 to 2022, the group said in a recent report, with 3,358 exposures managed in 2022.

Researchers found more than 6% of U.S. adults reported ever experiencing symptoms of long COVID as of 2022. Extrapolated to the U.S. population, it would mean more than 16 million adult Americans had experienced long COVID symptoms as of the survey. “State-level estimates might also help identify geographic disparities in Long COVID across the United States that could guide interventions to promote health equity.”Symptoms of long COVID can include tiredness, fatigue, difficulty thinking, “brain fog,” shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, menstrual changes and post-exertional malaise. The percentage of Americans who have experienced symptoms of long COVID are surely higher now than they were in 2022. Research published last week in the journal Pediatrics estimated that up to 5.8 million children have developed long COVID.

Dozens of cities are on track for one of the warmest winters on record, making snow and ice rare commodities. A classic El Niño pattern coupled with the effects of a warming climate are to blame for this “non-winter” winter, said Pete Boulay, a climatologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Missing snowfall is even more pronounced in areas surrounding the Great Lakes, especially those that are typically buried by lake-effect snow. Middle Tennessee has one metaphorical foot in the Midwest and one in the Deep South. We expect a certain amount of weather whiplash here, even without factoring in the extremities of climate change, but January has been a carnival ride. Last week, temperatures dropped into the single digits at night and didn’t rise much higher during the day. Water pollution from factories and industry is typically federally regulated. Homebuilder sentiment improved in January, jumping 7 points to 44 on the National Association of Home Builders monthly index. Anything below 50 is still considered negative, but the index has now moved 10 points higher in the last two months. The increase coincides with a big drop in mortgage interest rates from around 8% in mid-October to the 6% range in December. Regionally, on a three-month moving average, builder confidence increased the most in the Northeast, the only area now in positive territory at 55. Sentiment was flat in the Midwest and rose slightly in the South and West.
