Anwar said the government would support the development of the rare earths industry in Malaysia and that a ban would "guarantee maximum returns for the country". The rare earth industry is expected to contribute as much as 9.5 billion ringgit ($2 billion) to the country's gross domestic product in 2025 and create nearly 7,000 job opportunities, Anwar said in parliament. "Detailed mapping of rare earth element sources and a comprehensive business model that combines upstream, midstream and downstream industries will be developed to maintain the rare earth value chain in the country," he said. The curbs triggered fears that China could also limit exports of other critical minerals including rare earths. Australia's Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (LYC.AX), the biggest producer of rare earths outside China, has a plant in Malaysia to process concentrate that it gets in Australia.

REUTERS/Chris Helgren Acquire Licensing RightsSept 5 (Reuters) - Enbridge (ENB.TO) will buy three utilities from Dominion Energy (D.N) for $14 billion including debt, the Canadian pipeline operator said on Tuesday, creating North America's largest natural gas provider and doubling its gas distribution business. The deals for East Ohio Gas, Questar Gas, and Public Service Co of North Carolina will consist of $9.4 billion in cash and $4.6 billion of assumed debt. U.S.-listed shares of Enbridge fell 6.5% to $33.01 in extended trading after the company also announced a C$4 billion ($2.9 billion) bought-share sale to fund a portion of the deal. The modest improvement in Enbridge's business risk profile is not enough to "offset ongoing pressure on the company's financial profile," said Gavin MacFarlane, vice president and senior credit officer at Moody's, in a statement.

China's industrial profits extend slump into seventh month

A view of the automated container port in Qingdao in east China's Shandong province. Profits at China's industrial firms fell 6.7% in July from a year earlier, extending this year's slump to a seventh month with weak demand squeezing companies as a post-pandemic recovery faltered in the world's second-biggest economy. Profits were down 8.3% in June, according to the bureau, which only occasionally publishes monthly figures. "Commodity prices are running low, the pressure on raw material costs in the midstream and downstream industries has eased. Major banks have downgraded their growth forecasts for the year to below the government's target of about 5% as recovery sputters on a worsening property slump, weak consumer spending and tumbling credit growth, prompting the authorities to slash interest and promise further support.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the second quarter of 2023 were $2.17 billion, versus $2.36 billion a year before. That was partially offset by higher revenues from increased volumes on its natural gas liquids, natural gas and crude oil businesses, it said. Enterprise sees natural gas liquids pricing and ethane pricing as constructive in the second half of 2023. During the quarter, the company saw operational records for natural gas pipeline volumes and natural gas liquids fractionation volumes. It brought online new projects including the 400 million cubic feet per day expansion of its Haynesville Extension of the Acadian natural gas pipeline system, and its Poseidon cryogenic natural gas processing plant in the Midland Basin.

Lengths of pipe wait to be laid in the ground along the under-construction Mountain Valley Pipeline near Elliston, Virginia, U.S. September 29, 2019. REUTERS/Charles Mostoller/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. energy company Equitrans Midstream (ETRN.N) on Tuesday said it still expects to complete the Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline by the end of the year despite being tangled in numerous court fights since construction began in 2018. Mountain Valley is key to unlocking gas supplies from Appalachia, the nation's biggest shale gas-producing basin in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. When Mountain Valley started construction in February 2018, Equitrans estimated the 2.0-billion cubic feet per day project would cost about $3.5 billion and enter service by late 2018. The 303-mile (488-kilometer) Mountain Valley project is owned by units of Equitrans, the lead partner building the pipe with a roughly 48.3% interest, NextEra Energy (NEE.N), Consolidated Edison (ED.N), AltaGas (ALA.TO) and RGC Resources (RGCO.O).

Bank of America has been Sigma's bank on retainer for some time and has been holding meetings for at least four months with parties that approach with interest in acquiring the lithium miner, Sigma CEO Ana Cabral-Gardner said in an interview. Cabral-Gardner said that while Bank of America is coordinating meetings with parties that approach Sigma, Sigma has not yet picked a bank to advise on any potential transaction. "We need to find someone to marry, and when we find someone to marry, then we choose a priest," Cabral-Gardner said, making an analogy between an M&A banker and a priest. Cabral-Gardner added that Sigma does not plan to sell the Brazilian mine separately from the company itself. Sigma has projected the mine will reach annual free cash flow of $455 million for its first phase of production.

Lengths of pipe wait to be laid in the ground along the under-construction Mountain Valley Pipeline near Elliston, Virginia, September 29, 2019. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed work on a natural gas pipeline crossing federal land in Virginia to resume over the objections of environmental groups. The justices granted an emergency request filed by Mountain Valley Pipeline, meaning that final elements of the 303.5 mile pipeline running from the northwestern part of West Virginia to southern Virginia can be finished. The appeals court intervened despite Congress including language in the recently enacted Fiscal Responsibility Act backed by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., that stripped courts of authority to review approval of the pipeline. "The court of appeals' stay orders flew in the face of this recent, on-point, and emphatic congressional command that the remaining construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline must proceed without further delay," the lawyers added.

Investment in the critical minerals pipeline grew by 20% in 2021 and by 30% in 2022, led by lithium, copper and nickel. Although prices of some critical minerals such as copper have eased over the last year due to recession in the "old economy", prices for most critical minerals remain well above historical averages as supply struggles to catch up with demand. Production trends for nickel and cobaltLIMITED DIVERSIFICATIONThere has been only limited success in diversifying the geographical sourcing of critical minerals in recent years, the IEA said. China, which already dominates lithium processing, accounts for half of the world's planned new lithium chemical plants. Moreover, China's move to control exports of gallium and germanium underlines the concentration of supply in a host of smaller, esoteric metals that feed into the critical minerals landscape.

Energy stocks are also this year's underdogs, with the S & P sector down more than 7%. In turn, the limited partners collect income distributions from the business. MLPs aren't subject to federal income taxes, but the limited partners are responsible for levies on the income they receive. In that case, the C-corp pays corporate income taxes and the shareholders are responsible for levies on dividends they get. Tax hurdles Attractive income aside, investors need to be on the lookout for where they keep these MLPs.

NEW YORK/LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - Global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity fell 36% year-on-year in the second quarter, but investment bankers and lawyers expressed optimism that the stock market's recovery will gradually restore chief executives' dealmaking confidence. "Global uncertainty is what is impacting M&A most - it just makes people uncomfortable. It's easier to say, I'll pass on a deal - nobody gets fired for passing on a deal. M&A volumes in the United States declined by 30% to $318.4 billion, while Europe and Asia Pacific volumes shrank 49% and 24% respectively. Not a single so-called mega-deal, which typically refers to transactions worth over $25 billion, was signed during the quarter.
