The Athletic NFL writers Mike Jones, Ted Nguyen and Michael Silver share their thoughts on all of these storylines and more. After Week 9 wins by the Ravens, Bills, Bengals and Chargers, who is the second-best team in the AFC? If you don’t have an elite quarterback, don’t even bother trying to insert yourself into the “Who Will Win the AFC?” conversation. Denver has an elite defense but the Ravens offense presents unique challenges that they won’t see every week. That score doesn’t indicate how good this Broncos team actually is.

Election bets were approved legally just weeks ago, as the 2024 race headed into its home sprint. The ongoing legal wrangling could still lead to a shutdown of U.S. election betting markets, but not until after the 2024 vote. The CFTC permits only U.S. residents to use the newly opened election betting markets, meaning many bettors on the platforms are also potential voters. Nonetheless, Adam Cochran, founder of venture capital fund Cinneamhain Ventures, says he worries about how voters perceive election betting odds. Mansour acknowledged it’s a “fair concern” that the general public might mistakenly see betting odds as the size of a candidate’s lead.

CNN —It’s been more than six years since Irvine, California, banned short-term rentals — and the city’s mayor hasn’t looked back. “I certainly don’t think it’s a major driver of the housing affordability crisis,” Nieuwerburgh said. “The reality is that there just simply aren’t enough short-term rentals out there to really make a difference,” Yedinsky said. In Irvine, although Mayor Khan said the ban had been well received, Irvine’s housing affordability issues aren’t yet solved. Each Airbnb or other short-term rental host must pay a fee to the city to operate as a short-term rental business.

A person with knowledge of the matter told CNN that an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had been drafted by the Post’s editorial board members before it was quashed by Bezos. NPR reported that by midday Monday more than 200,000 people had canceled their digital subscriptions to the Post, citing two people familiar with the matter. Two Post journalists, Molly Roberts and David E. Hoffman both announced Monday they had stepped down from their positions on the editorial board, although both will stay at the paper. A third journalist, Mili Mitra also stepped down, the Post reported, meaning nearly one-third of the 10-member board had resigned. “I cannot sit here any longer on the editorial board and write those editorials while we ourselves have given in to silence,” he said.

New York CNN —Target is lowering the price of its Thanksgiving meal bundle, adding to the roughly 8,000 products that have been discounted as it attempts to attract inflation-weary shoppers during the holiday season. Target is the latest major retailer to chop the price of its Thanksgiving meal bundle, joining Aldi and Walmart in a holiday price war. Sam’s Club last week announced a Member’s Mark Thanksgiving meal, which feeds up to 10 people for under $100, made up of the warehouse club’s private label products and is delivered already cooked. Food price inflation has moderated substantially during the past year, Consumer Price Index data shows. Gomez said Target customers are buying in bulk to save money, or purchasing smaller items that have cheaper prices compared to their full-sized counterpart.

New York CNN —One day after The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a presidential candidate in this year’s election or in the future, its billionaire owner remains silent as the newspaper’s staff are in turmoil. A source with knowledge told CNN on Friday that an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had been drafted before it was squashed. But when Baron was in charge of the newspaper, Bezos “resisted that pressure” and he was “proud” and “grateful” for that leadership. “Bezos has other commercial interests, a big stake and Amazon, he has a space company called Blue Origin,” Baron said. “Reporting around the role of The Washington Post owner and the decision not to publish a presidential endorsement has been inaccurate,” Lewis said.

And how should investors be thinking about future equity returns as the bull market enters its third year riding stellar multi-year performance and facing demanding valuations? So, expansionary policies that would quicken the economy's metabolism and produce more inflation was exactly what the market craved then – but now? Right now, the S & P 500 is up 42% from 18 months ago and fetches 22-times expected earnings. No reliable augurs of a coming bear market are in evidence: S & P up 10 of 11 months, making a new high in September, credit spreads resolutely narrow, all point to an upside bias over a span of months, at least. .SPX YTD mountain S & P 500, YTD Which leaves the question of just how much upside, if any, a bull should reasonably expect from here.

New York CNN —The daughter of Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong suggested on Saturday that herfather’s decision to block the newspaper’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris was made over Harris’ support for Israel’s war in Gaza. “Our family made the joint decision not to endorse a Presidential candidate. Three members of the Times’ editorial board resigned over the decision. I’m proud of the LA Times’ decision just as I am certain there is no such thing as children of darkness. The record shows that Mr. Trump often pursues his stated goals, regardless of how plainly they lack legal or moral grounding. For this reason, Americans would be wise to see this language as a genuine threat, not simply Mr. Trump on a tangent. Why You Should Believe Him As president, Mr. Trump repeatedly sought to use the power of government to punish his political opponents. But rules can be rewritten, and Mr. Trump has made clear that he intends to pick officials who will take orders from the Oval Office. Mr. Trump would have broad authority to pursue such a plan, though he’d need Congress to provide a lot of money.
