Buy now, pay later company Affirm is starting to offer loans for elective cosmetic procedures. Buy now, pay later options like Klarna and Affirm have become ubiquitous at checkouts on e-commerce retail sites for some time. I know: It can be hard to sympathize with someone who's using lip filler they can't afford by putting it on Affirm. But go back to what it's actually being used for: "cosmetic treatments, dental services, medical devices, and veterinary procedures."

Abbott Laboratories Why we own it : Abbott is a high-quality medtech company growing at a fast clip. As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. We also love that EPS results on Tuesday came in above the range management had forecasted — a classic case of under-promising and over-delivering. ABT YTD mountain Abbott Laboratories YTD Organic growth was very strong, up nearly 11%, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit increases. In diagnostics, where we see the impact of the decline in Covid testing sales, organic sales increased 5.4% year over year.

Organic sales growth for the underlying base business, which excludes Covid-19 testing-related sales, continued its momentum, growing 10.8% year over year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. Following the better-than-expected quarter, Abbott raised the low end of its full-year adjusted EPS and organic sales outlooks. New Delhi/London CNN —In just a few days, India will commence the world’s largest democratic election. So, is the hype around Modi’s India, which remains a largely impoverished country, justified? The world’s largest biometric database has also helped the government save millions by reducing corruption in welfare initiatives. Domestic investors, both retail and institutional, have been driving India’s stock market to unprecedented peaks. Still, India’s economy, much like its democracy, is far from perfect.

In late March, after two years of withering attacks on Ukraine, Russia knocked out half of Ukraine’s power supply. Up to that point, Russia’s missiles and kamikaze drones had mostly targeted the Ukrainian substations that push electricity from power plants to consumers. But the global community must now draw bright lines for combatants in future conflicts — and strengthen the hand of future prosecutors — by codifying specific protections for power grids. The international community already attempts to do that for select infrastructure, including hospitals, dams and nuclear power plants, via the Geneva Conventions. It’s time to add power grids to that privileged roster.

Heightened tensions in the Middle East, including the possibility of Iran attacking Israel, sent stocks back down and oil prices higher. If the choice is between a weak economy with lower rates or a strong economy with higher rates, we'll take the strong economy every time. Low rates may help with valuation multiples, but it's a strong economy that leads to earnings growth and that's what we, as long-term investors care about. Shelter costs are a major sticking point for overall inflation, which makes Tuesday's housing starts and building permits report a key watch item. We'll get another look at housing with the release of the March existing home sales report on Thursday.

More than 200 chemical plants across the country will be required to curb the toxic pollutants they release into the air under a regulation announced by the Biden administration on Tuesday. The regulation is aimed at reducing the risk of cancer for people living near industrial sites. This is the first time in nearly two decades that the government has tightened limits on pollution from chemical plants. The new rule, from the Environmental Protection Agency, specifically targets ethylene oxide, which is used to sterilize medical devices, and chloroprene, which is used to make rubber in footwear. They are considered a top health concern in an area of Louisiana so dense with petrochemical and refinery plants that it is known as Cancer Alley.

When asked, Gemini politely refused in some instances to generate images of historically White people, such as the Vikings. In the image space, if you asked previous AI image generators for an image of a CEO or a doctor, they initially almost always showed images of White males. Google announced its Gemini AI chatbot was pausing the generation of people in images after concerns were raised that it was creating historically inaccurate images. What makes censorship and manipulation worse with AI is that today’s AI already has a well-known hallucination problem. It may be a portent of what’s to come with AI and Big Tech leading us into Orwellian territory.

Between swirling geopolitical winds, the variables of climate change and continued disruptions resulting from the pandemic, the risks of depending on ships to carry goods around the planet were already conspicuous. The pitfalls of relying on factories across oceans to supply everyday items like clothing and critical wares like medical devices were at once vivid and unrelenting. Off Yemen, Houthi rebels have been firing missiles at container ships in what they say is a show of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. In Central America, a dearth of rainfall, linked to climate change, has limited passage through the Panama Canal. That has impeded a crucial link between the Atlantic and the Pacific, delaying shipments to the East Coast of the United States from Asia.

Johnson & Johnson on Monday announced it is working with Nvidia to develop and scale new artificial intelligence applications for surgery. For instance, the companies are using AI to analyze surgical video and automate the time-consuming documentation required after a procedure. Powell said Nvidia has worked in medical devices and imaging for more than a decade. More accessible surgical video means residents will not have to solely depend on the insight and availability of the more experienced physicians at their institutions. They look at game tape, and they get better over time as they look at themselves," Jegatheeswaran told CNBC in an interview.

Semiconductor stocks got a lift from the rising tide of artificial intelligence. The divergence between semiconductor stocks that are doing well and those that aren't is becoming starker, UBS said. It's "increasingly hard to place all semiconductor stocks in one single bucket," UBS said in a March 5 note. "The performance divergence between semiconductor stocks has been strong [year-to-date] and warrants attention," it added. UBS said while one group of stocks has "significantly" outperformed — artificial intelligence-related semiconductor stocks and semiconductor capital equipment stocks (excluding China) — another group has "materially trailed" — analog and microcontroller semiconductor companies.

Here’s a look at the world's first comprehensive set of AI rules:HOW DOES THE AI ACT WORK? The law’s early drafts focused on AI systems carrying out narrowly limited tasks, like scanning resumes and job applications. The astonishing rise of general purpose AI models, exemplified by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, sent EU policymakers scrambling to keep up. Rules for general purpose AI systems like chatbots will start applying a year after the law takes effect. Meanwhile, Brussels will create an AI Office tasked with enforcing and supervising the law for general purpose AI systems.

Can Your Personal Medical Devices Be Recycled?
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Ted Alcorn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Most of the plastic in your medicine cabinet is high-quality, medical grade — and devilishly difficult to safely dispose of, let alone recycle. Some at-home medical products, like needles that have come into contact with bodily fluids, should not even be relegated to household trash. They also sell special containers for shipping used, discarded needles and medical waste to sites for safe disposal. But when it comes to recycling plastic devices, from asthma inhalers to insulin and allergy pens, people may find themselves ping-ponging around without a solution. Some states recommend inquiring with local pharmacies, which in turn recommend checking with municipal recycling facilities.

Hospitals in recent years have shifted their use of online technology to support everything from telehealth to medical devices to patient records. Brett Callow, an analyst for the cybersecurity firm Emsisoft, counted 46 cyberattacks on hospitals last year, compared with 25 in 2022. The dramatic increase in these online raids has prompted the nation’s top health agency to develop new rules for hospitals to protect themselves from cyber threats. The attacks can put hospitals’ networks offline for weeks or months, forcing hospitals to turn away patients. In Chicago, Lurie hospital’s network has been offline for two weeks.

Europe’s biggest economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. And the outlook isn’t much brighter: the International Monetary Fund predicts that Germany will be the slowest-growing major economy in 2024, eking out an increase of just 0.5%. “Germany needs a fundamental economic transformation,” Marcel Fratzcher, president of the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin, told CNN. Carsten Koall/Getty ImagesHomegrown troublesAlongside an external environment that has become more hostile to Germany’s outward-facing economy, the country’s internal political climate has worsened. Artificial intelligence took the investing world by storm in 2023, and was behind much of Big Tech's gains for the S & P 500. The S & P 500 jumped a whopping 24% or so last year, with much of the increase coming from the "Magnificent Seven." The health-care sector is one example it cited, with AI set to be used across multiple areas such as biopharma, medical devices and services. Over the long term, it will be integral to drug discovery and clinical trial design processes, Goldman said.
