Markets are also waiting for the appointment of a new central bank governor to replace Sahap Kavcioglu, who spearheaded rate cuts under Erdogan's unorthodox policies. "I think we are seeing the impact of Simsek pushing (the Turkish central bank) for rational policy." Bankers say the lira's continued gradual depreciation will lead to improved market conditions and halt a decline in central bank reserves. But it sparked a record lira crisis in December of 2021 and sent inflation to a 24-year high above 85% last year. Erdogan is considering appointing Hafize Gaye Erkan, a senior finance executive in the United States, as central bank governor, Reuters reported on Monday.

Tens of billions of dollars of FX and gold reserves have been used up - another sign of systematic micro-management. Depositors have put some $33 billion into depreciation-protected bank accounts in the last two months, bringing the total to $121 billion - almost a quarter of all Turkish deposits. Benchmark international market bonds have fallen back 10%-15% and key FX market volatility gauges that look a year or more ahead have hit record highs. Eyes are now on the FX reserves and the lira as it surpasses 20 to the dollar, the latest major milestone in its long descent. "These weren't seen as cheap assets, they were seen as jewels," MIT's Acemoglu said of the M&A banking boom heyday.

Under the federal law, judges can rule NDAs unenforceable in instances of sexual harassment or assault. Herman has alleged sexual harassment occurred during her relationship with Woods, both in how it started and how it ended. They've asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed and called the sexual harassment claims "utterly meritless." "A boss imposing different work conditions on his employee because of their sexual relationship is sexual harassment," Herman's attorneys argue in the court filing. She was then locked out of the house, away from her personal property and pets, court documents allege.

CNN —Chaos ensued before a rugby league match between the Catalans Dragons and St Helens on Friday when a bull escaped from a pre-match parade and rampaged around the field. Television cameras showed the bull breaking free of its handler, dragging him along the ground, and charging around the field. Scattering players dropped rugby balls as they ran for cover, while some players even jumped over the barriers into the crowd. It marked a significant win over the reigning Super League champion St Helens, sealed by tries from Arthur Mourgue, Matt Ikuvalu and two from Tom Davies. “It was a bizarre start to the match,” Dragons head coach Steve McNamara said afterwards.

Garrett McNamara, 55, is an extreme surfer who in 2011 set a world record in Nazaré, Portugal, for the largest wave surfed, at 78 feet. He co-stars in the second season of the HBO documentary series “100-Foot Wave.” He spoke with Marc Myers. When I was 1½, I was in a child seat on our dining table as my father prepared to feed me. He later said I used my legs to scoot across the surface to the edge and then went right off the end.
The media as a whole has never really investigated the secrecy system and what it’s for and what its effects are. Q. What’s it like to live surrounded by thoughts of nuclear war and unaccountable government? I think about nuclear war not because I find it fascinating but because I want to prevent it, to make it unthinkable, because I care about the world that it would destroy. Q. Robert McNamara, who was secretary of defense during the Cuban missile crisis, once said, “The indefinite combination of human fallibility and nuclear weapons will destroy nations.” Why haven’t we seen nuclear weapons used since 1945? We have seen nuclear weapons used many times.

KimKim's head of product asked ChatGPT to plan a Costa Rica vacation for her family of four. A travel adviser said ChatGPT's suggestions weren't family-friendly and contained logistical errors. While there was nothing wrong with the locations themselves, travel adviser Brittany McNamara immediately found three issues with the plan. With McNamara's recommendations in mind, Fu asked ChatGPT to remove Guanacaste from the itinerary and come back with a revised schedule. "There's no ability to help with the logistics, which is what a travel adviser is really helpful for — not just the advice, but also the execution."

LONDON, March 2 (Reuters) - Haleon (HLN.L), the world's biggest standalone consumer health business with brands such as Sensodyne toothpaste and Advil painkillers, reported its first full-year results on Thursday which analysts said were in line with expectations. Analysts said on Thursday that Haleon has had a strong start to 2023, and its full-year revenue growth forecast of 4% to 6% was in line or just ahead of consensus estimates. Rivals with consumer health operations, such as Bayer (BAYGn.DE) and Reckitt (RKT.L), have charged higher prices to partly offset broader falls in sales volumes. "Our organic (full-year) revenue growth ... was well balanced between volume and price, with two thirds of the business gaining or holding share," McNamara said. Haleon, which is made up of assets previously owned by GSK and Pfizer (PFE.N) reported organic revenue growth of 9% last year, just ahead of the 8-8.5% increase it predicted for 2022.

The International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers, in September asked its locals to open talks with regional employer groups, said James McNamara, an ILA spokesman. A spokesman for the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents carriers and terminal operators on the West Coast, declined to comment. The Port of Houston and Georgia’s Port of Savannah have also benefited from freight diversions away from the West Coast. The West Coast labor talks have significant hurdles to overcome once the two sides resolve their regional disagreements, according to shipping industry officials. Shipping industry officials say the talks covering Gulf Coast and East Coast ports face fewer stumbling blocks.

LISBON — Veteran Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died on Thursday while practicing tow-in surfing on the giant waves in Nazaré on the central coast of Portugal, the local maritime authority said. Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa bettered McNamara’s mark in 2017, also at Nazaré, and German Sebastian Steudtner broke the record again there in 2020, surfing an 86-foot wave.
Investors should utilize the sharp pullback in Yeti 's stock to buy into a company with "solid fundamentals" at a steep discount, according to Canaccord Genuity. Analyst Brian McNamara initiated coverage of the cooler and drinkware maker with a buy rating in a note to clients Wednesday, saying the stock is as "bear-proof as its coolers" and calling the company an "iconic global lifestyle brand with staying power." Shares of Yeti have underperformed since the start of the year, falling 48% compared with a roughly 18% drawback in the S & P 500 . The firm's $58 price target suggests shares could rebound about 35% from Wednesday's close. "Despite its first 'miss & cut' as a public company with Q2 results and a potential risk that an incoming CFO could lower the bar, we believe market expectations are overly conservative," McNamara wrote.
Palm oil grows best in the regions right around the equator, so palm oil producers chop down rainforest and clear that felled vegetation by burning it, making it a prime target of conservation organizations like the Rainforest Rescue and the World Wildlife Fund. However, "it contains the same fatty acids, which are the molecular fingerprints of fats and oils, that palm oil does," Heller told CNBC.
Florida’s medical board is the first in the country to pursue such a rule, but Florida is among a wave of states where officials have attempted to restrict gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The effort to restrict such care began in April, when DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo issued nonbinding guidance through the Florida Health Department that sought to bar both “social gender transition” and gender-affirming medical care for minors. Accredited medical groups — including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association — have supported gender-affirming care for transgender youths. The first nine attendees who spoke were in favor of restricting gender-affirming care for minors. Only one of the eight had received gender-affirming medical care as a minor.
A jury found former Capitol police officer Michael Riley guilty Friday of obstructing the investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the charge related to his urging the rioter to remove posts. During the weeklong trial, prosecutors presented multiple messages Riley exchanged with Hiles beginning on January 7. In the first message, Riley introduced himself as a Capitol police officer and warned Hiles to delete social media posts placing him inside the Capitol on January 6. "Hey Jake, im a capitol police officer who agrees with your political stance," Riley wrote to Hiles.
Riley testified that he regrets reaching out to Hiles “every day” and that this has been “the worst year" of his life. Riley was charged in October 2021, and resigned from the department that month, although the details of his departure and current status have been concealed from jurors. Riley, who fishes in his free time, befriended Hiles, a boat captain with a social media following, shortly before the Capitol attack. “I was mad at myself and I was mad at Jake,” Riley testified. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anne P. McNamara asked Riley if he had wanted Hiles charged.
A French state-owned railroad operator wanted to help California with its high-speed rail project. "SNCF was very angry," Dan McNamara, a project manager for SNCF, told the Times. Within 7 years, they built a functioning high-speed rail system in Morocco, the New York Times reported. They told the state they were leaving for North Africa, which was less politically dysfunctional." The California High-Speed Rail Authority continues to build: The first section of the rail is under construction in Central California.
CNN —If all shows were animated like “The Simpsons,” networks wouldn’t need to strain to keep them alive. Yet live-action dramas come with shelf lives, which explains the CW’s twin attempts to extend two of its franchises with prequels: “Walker Independence,” a back-to-the-Old-West adjunct to its Texas Ranger reboot; and “The Winchesters,” a one-generation-back rekindling of the “Supernatural” flame. The main problem with “Walker” is the events that set the show in motion feel much better tailored to a limited series than an open-ended run. For now, “Walker Independence” (which, yes, will follow “Walker”) and “The Winchesters” come blessed with name recognition, but creatively speaking, first impressions say that the network has dipped into the prequel well twice too often. “Walker Independence” premieres October 6 at 9 p.m.
