Investors looking for artificial intelligence beneficiaries outside the megacap tech companies can search in a less buzzy part of markets — old economy stocks. "And that's our investing theme: Old economy companies that are embracing the digital revolution and the suppliers of the digital, you know, generative AI, cloud and cybersecurity tools," Tengler added. While megacap tech stocks have outperformed this year, helped by a surge of AI enthusiasm, the broader market has been left behind. But searching for more traditional companies embracing digitization could help investors identify less apparent beneficiaries of the AI boom, she said. "What we really like are the companies that are embracing digitization in their business, and improving margins," said Tengler, who holds oversized positions in the consumer discretionary, industrials and technology sectors of the market.

Base pay is an amount that Instacart shoppers and drivers are guaranteed to make if they accept an order, though they can earn more from customer tips. Daniel Danker, Instacart's chief product officer, told Insider that the company pays "guaranteed batch earnings that are 2x higher than other app-based companies." According to the report, the measures are designed to punish countries that seize Russian assets, and reward those which don't. Western companies that've stayed in Russia have made significant profits there, indirectly helping the Kremlin fund its war. Western companies collectively contributed more than $3.5 billion to the Russian state in 2022, Russian independent outlet Novaya Gazeta reported. The new measures Putin signed could be interpreted as a way of making it more difficult for firms to leave. Earlier in June, the Russian government sought to raise $4 billion by imposing a windfall tax on large Russian companies, Insider reported.

New owners of locations that once housed McDonald's and Starbucks say they got a great deal. In May 2022, McDonald's stopped doing business in Russia, citing the war in Ukraine, and the "unpredictable operating environment." They replaced Big Macs with Big Hits and sold a record 120,000 burgers on the first day in business, the chain's CEO told Reuters at the time. "We have never seen such daily turnover in the whole time McDonald's has worked in Russia," Oleg Paroev told Reuters in June 2022. Starbucks locations in Russia also ceased operations around the same time and became Stars Coffee, a cafe with a familiar green logo of a vaguely seafaring-looking queen.

In 1971, a half-dozen graduate students at Oxford University held what was perhaps the first protest of the modern animal rights movement. But one of those students, a young Australian philosopher named Peter Singer, turned his ideas into a transformative 1975 book, “Animal Liberation,” that was initially mocked for overreach. “The animal movement was still widely seen as crackpot,” Singer recalls. Singer has just issued a new edition of the book, updated and titled “Animal Liberation Now.” It’s a monument to the remarkable spread of the ideas he articulated in 1975. At least nine states and the European Union now ban veal crates, hen cages or tight stalls for sows.
