It's a disruption that Johnson — just two weeks into his job running the House — has said he wants to avoid. “We're running up against the clock on Nov. 17, and we're obviously aware of that,” Johnson said this week, referring to the date that government funding expires. Democrats have made it clear they will not support any funding packages that include policy wins for conservatives. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who the Democratic leader in the House, said they would not “pay a single, right-wing ransom demand” as part of a funding resolution. Democratic lawmakers are also eager to play up the House Republican divisions and to pin any blame for a shutdown squarely on the new speaker and his GOP colleagues.

The Senate, which Democrats control 51-49, has also been struggling to pass bills funding the government through Sept. 30, adding to calls for a stopgap "continuing resolution" to avert a shutdown. Further complicating matters is a Republican majority so narrow that House Speaker Mike Johnson can afford to lose no more than four party votes on legislation Democrats oppose. "He hasn't decided how that would be structured - if that would happen," House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, the No. 2 Republican, told reporters in the U.S. Capitol on Friday. The House passed two of three Republican spending bills on their agenda last week, covering congressional operations and the environment.

Speaker Mike Johnson is less wealthy than most lawmakers and doesn't appear to have a DC residence. But where does the man who just recently ascended to the next spot in the line of succession sleep when he's in Washington, DC? Most likely in his small congressional office on the unglamorous, fluorescent-lit fifth floor of the Cannon House Office Building, according to several lawmakers and a long-time friend of Rep. Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House. There are likely dozens of lawmakers sleeping in their offices each night, and some well-known former House members have been known to do it, including Florida Gov. Meanwhile, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — one of the richest members of Congress — has a residence in Washington, DC's Georgetown neighborhood.

One of the 31 Democrats who voted to spare George Santos explained why. Rep. Jeff Jackson wrote on Reddit that he's worried kicking Santos out before an ethics probe finishes would set a dangerous precedent. Rep. Jeff Jackson, a TikTok-savvy freshman lawmaker from North Carolina, wrote on Reddit that he didn't vote to spare Santos because he thinks Santos should remain in office. "The better precedent is to expel members only post-conviction or post-ethics investigation," Jackson wrote in a Reddit comment. In an unusual statement, the normally private House Ethics Committee said it would announce its next action by November 17.

Polls show US support for Ukraine military aid has been declining across political parties. A government shutdown also looms as Biden asks Congress for billions in aid to Israel and Ukraine. By early October, polls showed that support for arming Ukraine had declined amongst Americans of both political parties, a troubling sign for Kyiv. After Boebert won her last race by just 546 votes, she began revamping her campaign strategy. So-called ballot harvesting, which she's decried as an underhanded Democratic tactic, will be part of her campaign strategy. While campaigning in the district this election, Boebert seems “more empathetic" than her disruptive national profile. At events and debates in the last election, Boebert railed against then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who became a foil for bloated government, a broken system and Democratic demagoguery. After Colorado's largely city dwellers voted to reintroduce wolves to Colorado, Boebert has also proposed legislation to give ranchers greater recourse to defend their flocks.

Mitch McConnell is making a very public push to support additional US support for Ukraine. While some Senate Republicans are skeptical of Ukraine support, there is much greater opposition in the House. Rep. Mike Johnson's ascent to the House speakership last week took most in the GOP by surprise. He's now the first House speaker from the South since Newt Gingrich held the gavel in the 1990s. "This happened sort of suddenly," the Louisiana Republican said last Wednesday after succeeding Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California as speaker and as the new leader of the House GOP conference. Rep. Mike Johnson takes the oath of office to become the next House speaker on October 25, 2023. Challenges to Republican-drawn congressional districts across the South could give Democrats a significant opening to flip the House in 2024.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New House Speaker Mike Johnson inherits many of the same problems that bedeviled Republican leaders with far more experience. But can he unite House Republicans where others failed? Trump, who is running for a second White House term, enthusiastically backed Johnson and said he will be “a fantastic speaker." The House Republican Conference is deeply divided on those issues. The intractability of many House Republicans forced McCarthy to turn to Democrats for help in keeping the government running.

House Democrats were mostly stuck in DC for 3 weeks as the GOP struggled to choose a new speaker. Some Democrats told Insider they found a silver lining, like hitting the gym or dog-sitting. That left Democrats, already lined up behind House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, scrambling to find other things to fill the time. "I almost forget what it's like to be in committee at this point," Rep. Becca Balint of Vermont told Insider on Tuesday. Balint said that a "personal source of joy" for her was getting to dog sit Rep. Sharice Davids' rescue dog, Peanut.

Newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson was the bookkeeper for a crisis pregnancy center, IRS forms show. Crisis pregnancy centers have a history of spreading medical misinformation. Crisis pregnancy centers, or pregnancy resource centers, aim to stop people who are pregnant from seeking abortions by promoting adoption and parenting skills. Imagine Life Ministries noted on its website that many women "have never heard of pregnancy centers or the resources offered there." Imagine Life Ministries did not designate itself under that category in any filings since its founding.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Mike Johnson is the new speaker of the House, but the ally of Donald Trump inherits many of the same political problems that have tormented past GOP leaders, tested their grasp of the gavel and eventually chased them out of office. But the goodwill toward Johnson blurs the political fault lines challenging the Louisianan's ability to lead the GOP majority as it faces daunting issues ahead. While not the party's top choice for the gavel, the deeply religious and even-keeled Johnson has few foes and an important GOP backer: Trump. In the House, far-right members had refused to accept a more traditional speaker, and moderate conservatives didn't want a hard-liner. A lawyer specializing in constitutional issues, Johnson had rallied Republicans around Trump’s legal effort to overturn the 2020 election results.

Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy's ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. “I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference,” he said, referring to the GOP majority. House Republicans returned behind closed doors, where they spend much of their time, desperately searching for a leader who can unite the factions, reopen the House and get the U.S. Congress working again. In the end, Johnson won 128 votes on the evening ballot, more than any other candidate. With Republicans controlling the House 221-212 over Democrats, any GOP nominee can afford just a few detractors to win the gavel.

U.S. Republican Representative from California Kevin McCarthy speaks with Republican Representative from Ohio Jim Jordan as the U.S. House of Representatives continues voting for new speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, January 4, 2023. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is floating a plan that would reinstall him as House speaker and make conservative Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The proposed alliance aims to unite warring factions of the House Republican Conference, which has been leaderless since McCarthy was ejected from the speaker's office. A source briefed on the proposal likened it to the arrangement Democrats had when Rep. Nancy Pelosi was speaker and Rep. Katherine Clark was assistant speaker. "Kevin speaker, Jordan assistant speaker," the source said.

The CEO of military contractor RTX said Tuesday the company could "benefit" from an increased DoD budget. Liwag asked how quickly RTX Corporation, formerly known as Raytheon Corporation, could profit if Congress approves President Biden's request for a DoD budget increase in 2024. Rep. Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House, is in a "covenant marriage." Johnson told a reporter in 2001 that he had encouraged other friends to do the same thing. Under Louisiana state law, couples sign a document in which they agree to seek marital counseling before getting a divvorce. "A covenant marriage agreement may not be dissolved, rescinded, or otherwise terminated by the mutual consent of the spouses," reads the relevant portion of Louisiana state law. "Because so few people have chosen covenant marriage in Louisiana, it seems like an unpopular idea," he said at the time.

On Wednesday, GOP Rep. Mike Johnson became the newest speaker of the House. Now, with new Speaker Mike Johnson at the helm, the party may grapple for some time with how opposite Johnson is from his predecessor. Johnson's sudden rise to becoming speaker comes just over a year before the 2024 election where the Republican Party is aiming to regain control. Neither prediction ultimately came true: Republicans only gained a very slim majority of the House and managed to lose footing in the Senate. Less than two years later, it's now Johnson's responsibility to make sure the Republican Party remains in power.

U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 24, 2023. Emmer has been seen as a strong supporter of assisting Ukraine in it war with Russia. A "report card" by the conservative Defending Democracy Together's "Republicans for Ukraine" campaign gave Emmer an "A excellent" rating, based on his past votes. Jordan received an "F very poor" rating, as did Representative Mike Johnson, the last speaker candidate eliminated before Emmer became the nominee. Republicans have a narrow 221-212 House majority, and many have voted for Ukraine aid, but the next speaker could quash more assistance before a proposal reaches the House floor if he opposed the idea.
