CNN —Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm. The intense hurricane spawned tornadoes, dumped rain across much of the state, left millions without power and claimed at least 12 lives, including five people in St. Lucie County. Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year — which has only happened during five other hurricane seasons since 1871. Many areas in Florida are also recovering from the aftermath of a Milton-spurred torrent “supercharged” tornadoes, according to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan. Milton was the fifth hurricane to make landfall in the United States this year, joining Category 1 Beryl, Category 1 Debby, Category 2 Francine and Category 4 Helene.

The Gateway Pundit, infamous for publishing extremely partisan and sensationalized material, often dabbles in baseless right-wing conspiracy theories. The company tried to declare bankruptcy in April, saying the 2020 defamation cases were threatening its solvency. Gateway Pundit is appealing that ruling. As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

Florida authorities issued dire warnings Tuesday to residents in Hurricane Milton's path, telling them "time is running out" to flee the potentially historic storm that's set make landfall in a day's time. WFTSFlorida leaders still working to respond to damages from Hurricane Helene issued emphatic pleas to Tampa-area residents Sunday to heed evacuation orders, as Hurricane Milton is expected to strengthen and hit the state’s western coast by mid-week. “Nobody up here can save your life if you put yourself in harm’s way.”Officials expect storm surge, other flooding and high winds that knock out power, Scott said. With some roads still flooded from Helene, residents can expect a similar kind of storm surge from Milton – but this time with strong winds, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister warned. Many people are still without cell phone service after Helene, Moody said, advising residents to buy a small AM radio and a couple of batteries.

MEXICO CITY — The mayor of the capital of Mexico’s violence-plagued state of Guerrero was killed on Sunday less than a week after he took office, the state’s governor confirmed. Alejandro Arcos was killed just six days after he took office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico. Arcos' death comes just three days after the new city government’s secretary, Francisco Tapia, was shot to death. At least six candidates for public office were killed in the state in the run-up to Mexico's June 2 elections. Arcos' social media posts show the mayor in recent days had been supervising disaster relief efforts following the impact of Hurricane John last month, which caused severe flooding in beach resort Acapulco and surrounding towns.

CNN —The mayor of a crime-ridden city in Mexico has been killed less than a week after taking office, the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting politicians in the country. However, the violence facing Mexican politicians stretches far beyond Guerrero, as was demonstrated by the historic June 2 election that took Sheinbaum to power. With 20,000 electoral positions up for grabs, the scale of bloodshed committed by those attempting to influence the vote was unprecedented. Just hours after Sheinbaum’s election, the woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead. It says that criminal gangs often finance campaigns during election season, intimidating candidates and violently intervening to compel politicians to cooperate with them.

A hurricane warning was issued for parts of Mexico's Yucatan state, and much of Florida's west coast was under hurricane and storm surge watches. It had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (257 kph), the National Hurricane Center said. Its center could come ashore Wednesday in the Tampa Bay area, and it could remain a hurricane as it moves across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. That would largely spare other states ravaged by Helene, which killed at least 230 people on its path from Florida to the Appalachian Mountains. The Tampa Bay area is still rebounding from Helene and its powerful surge.
