A major strike is on the horizon for thousands of maritime workers, posing a threat to East Coast ports responsible for billions of dollars of goods. The union is arguing for better wages and continued protections against automation and new technology in its terminals. The ILA has argued that the USMX is denying workers fair contracts with adequate wage raises and proper benefits. In all of its updates since July 18, USMX has maintained that the union refuses to return to negotiations. The ILA and USMX will need to agree upon a new master contract by Oct. 1, before the current six-year contract expires and the ILA pledges to go on strike.

Almost 80% of current freight orders received for peak season are for mid-range price items, the survey shows. Imports coming to the U.S. from China are experiencing a notable increase, according to new trade and logistics data. The first half of 2024 is expected to total 11.7 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), an increase of 11% from the same period last year. In 2023, imports were down from 2022 by almost 13%, totaling 22.3 million TEUs. By comparison, New York/New Jersey processed 7.81 million TEUs, Georgia 5.4 million TEUs, Virginia at 3.3 million TEUs, Charleston 2.5 million TEUs, Jacksonville 1.3 million TEUs, and Miami 1.25 million TEUs. The other reason for the recent container push is fears of a labor strike at East Coast and Gulf ports.

The International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers, in September asked its locals to open talks with regional employer groups, said James McNamara, an ILA spokesman. A spokesman for the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents carriers and terminal operators on the West Coast, declined to comment. The Port of Houston and Georgia’s Port of Savannah have also benefited from freight diversions away from the West Coast. The West Coast labor talks have significant hurdles to overcome once the two sides resolve their regional disagreements, according to shipping industry officials. Shipping industry officials say the talks covering Gulf Coast and East Coast ports face fewer stumbling blocks.
