The Carnival cruise ship Sunrise is seen docked at Miami Port, in Miami, Florida, U.S., June 18, 2022. Still, its shares fell about 4.7% as Carnival forecast an unfavorable net impact of $130 million in the fourth quarter from higher fuel prices and unfavorable currency exchange rates. Unlike other major cruise operators, Carnival does not hedge against volatility in oil prices. Carnival posted third-quarter profit of $1.07 billion, or 79 cents per share, compared with a loss of $770 million, or 65 cents per share, a year earlier. Its quarterly revenue of $6.9 billion beat estimates of $6.69 billion, according to LSEG data, and also hit a record high.

The Carnival cruise ship Sunrise is seen docked at Miami Port, in Miami, Florida, U.S., June 18, 2022. Unlike other major cruise operators, Carnival does not hedge against volatility in oil prices. Cruise operators, therefore, have a lot of room to hike prices and still stay cheaper than land vacations. Carnival posted third-quarter profit of $1.07 billion, or 79 cents per share, compared with a loss of $770 million, or 65 cents per share, a year earlier. Carnival now expects annual loss per share between 12 cents and 4 cents, compared with its previous forecast for a loss between 20 cents and 8 cents.

"I think the potential for unintended harm from the use of AI exists in any federal agency and in any use of AI," said DHS Chief Information Officer Eric Hysen. And when we interact with people, it can be during some of the most critical times of their lives." Historically, academics have flagged the dangers of AI regarding racial profiling and because it can still make errors while identifying relationships in complex data. The guidelines will also require that facial recognition matches discovered using AI technology be manually reviewed by human analysts to ensure their accuracy, according to a new directive that the agency plans to release alongside the AI memo later on Thursday. Another area where DHS has already uses AI technology extensively is on the southern border, where the agency has deployed more than 200 surveillance cameras, said Hysen.

"Unfortunately, following numerous meetings and conciliation sessions before the Fair Work Commission, we remain apart on key terms," a Chevron spokesperson said. Brad Gandy, a spokesperson for the Offshore Alliance, said the union coalition had agreed "in good faith" to the mediated talks, "but after five days Chevron has barely budged". Energy analyst Saul Kavonic said the strikes appeared to be designed to put more pressure on Chevron to cut a deal rather than substantially affect production.

Chevron Australia LNG workers to begin strikes on Friday

Australia is the world's biggest LNG exporter, and the ongoing dispute over wages and conditions had stoked volatility in gas prices. "Despite the Offshore Alliance giving Chevron plenty of opportunity to sort out (bargaining agreements) ... they will finally be facing their day of reckoning," the union alliance said in a Facebook post. Work stoppages that could reach up to 11 hours will begin from 1 p.m. Perth time (0500 GMT) on Friday and last through Sept. 14. The strike action had been scheduled to begin on Thursday morning but was delayed due to mediation talks hosted by the Fair Work Commission, Australia's industrial umpire. When strike actions begin, the LNG plant will have to be shut down "if there are not competent personnel to undertake handovers during work stoppages," the union said.

REUTERS/Marco Bello/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - The White House said on Thursday President Joe Biden is nominating a former senior aviation official to head the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that has been without a permanent head since April 2022. Biden is tapping Michael Whitaker, currently chief commercial officer for Supernal, a Hyundai company developing an electric air vehicle, who served as a deputy FAA administrator under President Barack Obama. "He knows aviation, he knows safety, he knows the FAA and he knows how to manage and modernize large organizations," he said. Biden's prior nominee to head the FAA Phil Washington withdrew in March after critics said he lacked aviation experience. The Air Line Pilots Association praised Whitaker's nomination and said the FAA needed "permanent, stable leadership that is safety-focused."

REUTERS/Marco Bello/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 17 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he had canceled a press conference scheduled for next week to release a report into the 2020 election in Georgia, saying his attorneys would put his arguments in court filings instead. Trump said earlier this week that he would hold the press conference on Monday to release a detailed, 100-page report into what he described as "election fraud" in the state of Georgia during the 2020 election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. "Rather than releasing the Report on the Rigged & Stolen Georgia 2020 Presidential Election on Monday, my lawyers would prefer putting this, I believe, Irrefutable & Overwhelming evidence of Election Fraud & Irregularities in formal Legal Filings," Trump said on Truth Social. Since his defeat in 2020, Trump has repeatedly claimed that the election was marred by widespread fraud.

So as the climate crisis forces up ocean temperatures, rapid intensification becomes more likely, pushing storms to explode at a rapid pace into deadly hurricanes, scientists say. U.S. forecasters raise 2023 hurricane forecast

REUTERS/Marco Bello/File PhotoHOUSTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - U.S. government forecasters on Thursday said they expect a more dangerous Atlantic storm season than previously projected, raising their Atlantic hurricane outlook due to high sea surface temperatures. In May, NOAA had predicted 12-17 named storms, 5-8 hurricanes and one to four major hurricanes. An average Atlantic season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. NOAA's forecast was raised "to account for record warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic," said meteorologist Matthew Rosencrans with the agency’s Climate Prediction Center. "We normally have our 4th named storm on August 14th and first hurricane on August 11th, and we are at 4 named storms and one hurricane."
