WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and China are the two global economic heavyweights. The meeting will bring together 21 Pacific Rim countries, which collectively represent 40% of the world’s people and nearly half of global trade. Indeed, imports of Chinese goods to the United States were down 24% through September compared with the same period of 2022. Xi, too, has reason to try to restore economic cooperation with the United States. “This will not be an easy sell.’’Complicating matters is that the tensions between Washington and Beijing go well beyond economics.

The Biden administration is still concerned about environmental, social and governance standards in Indonesia and is examining how a deal might work, the sources said. "There's a lot of work to do before we are able to formally announce negotiations on a critical minerals partnership," the person said. Indonesia does not have a free trade agreement with the United States. The only U.S. nickel mine is set to close in a few years, and the country has no nickel smelter, a risk to Biden's goal for the United States to lead in EV manufacturing. Many U.S. miners have said that the Biden administration should focus more on approving domestic projects than seeking international supply.

Many U.S. oil producers are pumping only enough oil to keep production flat and turning over more profit to investors. Presently, this relationship faces more challenges than it has encountered in the past two decades. They must also rebuild the essential habits of cooperation to address the existential challenges that have arisen. However, this deep-rooted reliance underscores their vulnerability to disruptions and uncertainties in the ever-shifting landscape of U.S.-China relations. Such a shift toward stability isn't just beneficial for these corporations but stands to bolster the overall bilateral relationship between the two nations. The summit could be the final chance to stabilize the relationship, demonstrating to domestic audiences in both countries and global stakeholders that a workable, if not entirely ideal, management framework for China-U.S. relations is possible.

What’s at Stake in Today’s Elections
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
And even though we’re in what political analysts call an off-year — with neither a presidential election nor midterm congressional elections — a steady stream of voters still showed up at polling stations. Two governorships are at stake in competitive races in typically Republican southern states. In Ohio, voters will decide whether to enshrine the right to abortion in the state’s Constitution and whether to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Today’s elections, which also include all 140 Virginia legislative contests and a race to fill a Pennsylvania Supreme Court seat, will probably be dissected for hints about 2024. The results may determine whether Democrats find some reassurances about their approach to key issues like abortion, which has been a bright spot for their party.

Novo Nordisk on Thursday said 80% of U.S. patients with insurance coverage who take its highly popular weight loss treatment Wegovy are paying less than $25 a month for the drug. He estimated that about 50 million Americans with obesity could be eligible for Wegovy coverage under their health plans. Most patients have to take Wegovy for several months to see — and sustain — significant weight loss. Wegovy, for example, leads to 15% weight loss after 68 weeks, according to clinical trials on the drug. But Novo Nordisk is hoping that new data demonstrating the heart health benefits of Wegovy will put more pressure on insurers to cover the medication and similar weight loss treatments.

President Joe Biden’s Cabinet secretaries will be advocating for the foreign aid to a mostly friendly audience in the Senate, where majority Democrats and many Republicans support tying aid for the two countries together. Despite growing questions about the Ukraine aid within the Republican conference, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell has forcefully advocated tying the aid for Ukraine and Israel together. As they returned to Washington on Monday night, Senate Republicans who support the Ukraine aid were uncertain of the path forward. 2 Senate Republican, said it could complicate Democrats’ efforts to pass the two together if there were a bipartisan vote for the Israel aid alone in the House. In recent weeks, though, a growing group of Senate Republicans have joined the majority of House Republicans who are advocating to slow down or stop U.S. aid to Ukraine.

But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.
