The uneasy truce between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah largely held through its second day in Lebanon on Thursday, although Israel conducted an airstrike that it said targeted militants violating terms of the cease-fire deal. The Israeli strike was the first of its kind since the U.S.-backed cease-fire went into effect before dawn on Wednesday. But despite an exchange of blame between two parties of the deal — Israel and Lebanon — neither of the war’s combatants, Israel or Hezbollah, seemed keen to immediately return to full-scale fighting. Lebanon’s army, which is set to play a major role in enforcing the truce, accused Israel of violating the cease-fire “several times” on Thursday afternoon. The Israeli military also said its soldiers had stopped militants from advancing into southern Lebanon.

It's the fifth year Amazon workers have protested during the major shopping weekend. That would mark the currency's weakest level on record, according to LSEG data going back to 2004. Trump had already pledged 60% or higher tariffs on Chinese goods during his election campaign. They calculated each person’s Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) score, with higher scores denoting more regular sleepers. The team then tracked incidents of cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure and stroke over eight years and found that irregular sleepers were 26% more likely to suffer one of these events than those with a regular sleep cycle. Irregular sleep means the variations in the time someone goes to sleep and wakes up. However, it was an observational study and, as such, can only establish a link rather than cause and effect: we can’t know for sure if irregular sleep patterns caused the increased risk. But even those irregular sleepers who got the recommended amount of sleep had a higher risk of suffering a major cardiovascular event.

Such tariffs have the potential to significantly increase the prices consumers pay on nearly everything that isn’t made entirely in the US, of which there are very few goods. And as we witnessed during the pandemic, “stockpiling by consumers can actually lead to higher prices in and of themselves and empty store shelves,” he said. That said, here are five items that are likely to get more expensive with any new tariffs Trump imposes that may make sense to purchase before he takes office. Are Airline Loyalty Programs Worth It?

When SuzAnn Brantner moved to Indiana from Los Angeles during the coronavirus pandemic, she had been a longtime Delta Air Lines frequent flier, achieving the highest loyalty status the airline offered: Diamond Medallion. “I just always loved Delta,” Ms. Brantner, a 50-year-old marketing executive, said. She traveled every month because of her job and made sure to book all her flights with Delta — even if she had to make a connection and other airlines offered a direct flight. But last year, when Delta announced it would be making modifications to its frequent-flier program, Ms. Brantner began to question her loyalty. On Reddit communities dedicated to three major domestic carriers — Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines — some users are wondering whether maintaining airline loyalty status is worth it anymore as they calculate how much they will need to spend and travel for the rest of the year in order to reach certain status levels next year.

Federal ethics laws require those senior government jobs in the Cabinet and beyond to divest their individual stock holdings, lest anyone be tempted to abuse their position of power to juice their personal investments. “The rule of thumb is, recuse or divest,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president for communications at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. “The more complex your assets are, the harder it can be to divest from them. Although the president isn’t subject to conflict of interest laws, most presidents have adhered to them anyway to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Given Trump’s own disregard for ethics rules, it’s not clear how, or even whether, his Justice Department would enforce the criminal conflict of interest laws that his Cabinet picks are subject to.

Each time, when the West finally accepted Ukraine’s requests, Russia’s most catastrophic threats did not materialize. Although Putin said the attack was “a response from our side” to the Biden administration’s decision on longer-range weapons, Russia has not needed a pretext for such strikes in the past. By providing Ukraine with ATACMS but only allowing it to strike parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia, “we sent Russia the message: ‘You know what? The decision to fire slightly longer-range Western weapons is a difference of degree, not of kind. This surge means that coffee prices across the board — from fancy beverages made from Arabica beans to robusta-fueled instant coffee — are almost sure to cost more for the everyday consumer. On Wednesday, the global benchmark for arabica coffee — March 2025 arabica coffee futures — ended 4.6% higher on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) at $3.2305 per pound, after hitting their highest level since 1977. Food giant Nestlé, the world's largest coffee maker, said last week that it will hike prices to deal with the rise in coffee prices. Coffee drinkers are already paying more: Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show coffee prices for urban consumers rose sharply from July 2021 to February 2023. Speculators jumping into the coffee marketGiven the confluence of factors pushing up coffee prices, non-commercial speculators, such as funds, are joining the market.

Kinga Krzeminska | Moment | Getty ImagesIreland goes to the polls on Nov. 29, with center-right parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael once again expected to form the nucleus of the country's next government. On the flipside, there are concerns in Dublin that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will look to clamp down on U.S. companies paying taxes in Ireland, instead of in America. Political angleThe country's two biggest parties look once again on track to form a government, despite some travails for Fine Gael as the campaign winds down. The latest Irish Times/Ipsos B&A poll of Nov. 25 shows support for Fine Gael falling six points to 19% over the last two weeks, while Fianna Fáil's backing now stands at 21%. It is nevertheless unclear what policy changes can be expected, given the sway that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are likely to have in a potential government.

CNN —When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live following their engagement in 1998, she had a very specific requirement for their marital home: A view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The photographer has captured the spectacle almost every year since, missing the parade just twice in over a quarter of a century. Thomas the Tank Engine, the Kool-Aid Man and Boss Baby are just some of the dozens of other outsized characters Kahane has pictured floating slowly past her home — often at eye-level.
