And he was unveiling new reforms and investments in the World Bank, which the White House says could unlock hundreds of billions of dollars in grants and loans for the developing world. Biden hopes to use his announcements on new infrastructure and investments as demonstration of US commitment to the developing world, and a better option for partnership than China. Without Xi attending, Biden will have the implicit opportunity to demonstrate sustained American commitment while questioning China’s. President Biden arrived today in New Delhi for the Group of 20 summit, where the world leaders not in the room at the meeting this weekend may be as important as those who are there. China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia both decided to skip this year’s event, leaving a hole that the U.S. is seeking to fill. At the summit, Biden plans to use the absences of Xi and Putin as an opportunity to present his case to the large group of important leaders that they should align with the U.S. on major issues including condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine and curbing China’s assertiveness. Still, Biden will try to shore up his relationship with the summit’s host, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. My colleague Katie Rogers, who is covering the summit, said Biden saw Modi as “politically stable.” But, she added, “it remains to be seen how much of a partner he could be in forcefully countering China’s rise.”

“We hope this G20 summit will show that the world’s major economies can work together even in challenging times,” US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said this week. The institutions, created in the aftermath of World War II, have long funded education, public health and infrastructure programs in developing countries. Sullivan said this week the World Bank reforms were “not against China,” noting Beijing is a shareholder in the bank. “The biggest shareholders of the World Bank are all sitting around the G20 table. CNN —The color of the ocean has changed significantly over the last 20 years and human-caused climate change is likely responsible, according to a new study. They analyzed color variation data from 2002 to 2022 and then used climate change models to simulate what would happen to the oceans both with additional planet-heating pollution and without. The color changes matched almost exactly what Dutkiewicz predicted would happen if greenhouse gases were added to the atmosphere – that around 50% of our oceans would change color. Dutkiewicz, who has been running simulations that showed the oceans were going to change color for years, said she is not surprised at this finding. Dutkiewicz told CNN it was difficult to say whether color changes could become visible to humans if the process continues.

He also confirmed that the journalist who wrote the NRC article had seen the email from the Egyptian authorities. Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, did not respond to CNN’s request for comment. Some commented with photos showing light-skinned ancient Egyptian drawings, next to ones with darker skin tones, which they say the museum is propagating. Hong Kong CNN —World leaders attending the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima have been treated to a belt-expanding tour of local gastronomical delights with a host of menus showcasing the best of Japanese fine dining. Leaders were also served sea bream with Japanese matsutake mushrooms, simmered stonefish and slipper lobster. Next came famously marbled beef sourced from Hiroshima – known as hiba beef – served alongside red sea urchin and eggplants, complemented by a selection of sparkling sake and red wine. For the main, they will be served with homegrown chicken and locally sourced mussels, according to the menu seen by CNN. And for those still hungry, Sunak and other world leaders will have plenty more opportunities to sample Japanese cuisine before they begin to depart from Sunday.

As the G7 summit gets underway, Chinese officials will be closely watching from Beijing and will not hide their displeasure, experts say. In the lead-up to the summit, Beijing has already berated a statement by G7 foreign ministers. Similarly, Beijing also lashed out at accusations of its “economic coercion,” claiming it is the “victim of US economic coercion” rather than a perpetrator. And while China is not invited to Hiroshima, it is hosting its own summit with Central Asia countries, experts noted.

LIMA, Peru — Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Peru’s capital and were met with volleys of tear gas and pellets amid clashes with security forces just hours after President Dina Boluarte called for a “truce” in almost two months of protests. “We can’t have a truce when she doesn’t tell the truth,” Blanca España Mesa, 48, said of Peru’s president.
