Harris’ viewership victory amounted to a blow for Trump, who is famously obsessed with television ratings and the size of his crowds. The boost in viewership was also seen at ABC with 4.2 million viewers, and CNN with 3.9 million. Last month’s Republican convention in Milwaukee took place just days after the assassination attempt on Trump. As pressure mounted, Biden ended his campaign the weekend after the Republican convention. The singer had previously given the Harris campaign permission to use her 2016 hit “Freedom,” which played Thursday night as Harris took the stage.

The closing night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday drew about 26.2 million TV viewers, narrowly outpacing the Republican National Convention's final night, according to data from the media measurement company Nielsen. The convention's final night aired across 15 television networks and drew about 820,000 more viewers than the estimated 25.4 million people who watched the final night of the Republican event, Nielsen reported. The first night of the Republican convention drew an estimated 18.13 million viewers, compared to around 20 million viewers on the DNC's opening night, according to Nielsen. The DNC's closing night exceeded viewership for the convention’s final night four years ago, when 24.6 million viewers tuned in across cable and TV for President Joe Biden’s speech. In 2016, 30 million viewers tuned in for the final night of the 2016 Democratic convention.

Donald Trump’s campaign is expecting that Vice President Kamala Harris will get a “bump” coming out of the Democratic National Convention but generally does not see the week-long event changing the overall trajectory of the race. Trump's speech last month at the Republican National Convention lasted a record-setting 93 minutes. Kamala Harris during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, on Aug. 19, 2024. The party in Chicago is done, the confetti has been swept up, the pictures have been posted to social media. But the real question as exuberant Democrats woke up on Friday was whether they could channel the sheer intoxication of the United Center into a sustained, 74-day sprint to Election Day. The thousands of jubilant delegates in the hall this week were not representative of the swing voters that Ms. Harris needs to defeat former President Donald J. Trump. Ms. Harris can expect a bruising battle over the next two and a half months. Ms. Harris has had one of the most impressive debuts of any general election candidate in recent times, yet she still faces polls within the margin of error.

For many woman of color, particularly those who have run for office and been in the political spotlight, it’s a familiar challenge. In interviews and convention speeches, Black women leaders said the Harris campaign should continue to avoid engaging directly with personal attacks. This is another attempt by the media and the Harris campaign to deflect from Kamala Harris’ lack of having a complete policy agenda for the American people.”The Harris campaign has chosen not to engage. Gholar pointed to Harris’ campaign as an example. “She’s staying focused, she’s hitting back as needed, but she’s been extremely measured,” Stewart-Cousins said.

Carolyn McClanahan, a certified financial planner and founder of Life Planning Partners in Jacksonville, Florida, who also reviewed Harris' financial disclosure, said it makes her "heart sing" to see Harris investing in low-cost passive investment strategies. Since 2020, mortgage rates have increased substantially, which means the couple missed their chance to lock in a low rate for a longer term. McClanahan said she urged everyone to lock in the record low mortgage rates that were available back then.

Somehow, the Biden-turned-Harris campaign managed to make former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, once America’s coolest political couple, sound like parents in a Lifetime movie calling their child at summer camp. Early Friday morning, the Harris campaign posted a video it produced that depicted a phone call from Mr. and Mrs. Obama, which had taken place on Wednesday, in which they gave Ms. Harris their much-awaited endorsement. Former President Donald J. Trump’s silence to some extent reflects his desire for President Biden to stay in the race. But Mr. Trump has largely sat back and allowed the Democratic Party to dominate the debate over Mr. Biden’s political future, in a signal of his preferred opponent. Mr. Trump did appear to delight in mocking his rival in a raw video first reported by The Daily Beast on Wednesday and later shared by Mr. Trump. If Mr. Biden stepped aside, Mr. Trump would lose two lines of attack that have been central to his campaign. That message would be hamstrung if another candidate replaced Mr. Biden on the ticket.
