The talk took place at a packed, sweltering event space on the Lower East Side, before an audience heavy on Twitter (now X) personalities and writers for small magazines. Introducing the discussion, Sunkara said that when Ahmari invited him to participate, he was skeptical. But then he read Ahmari’s book, “Tyranny, Inc.: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty — and What to Do About It,” and found, as he explained, “surprisingly very little to criticize.”The book surprised me as well. As Sunkara pointed out, the word “woke” appears only a handful of times, in most cases in reference to the blind spots of the anti-woke right. Reading “Tyranny, Inc.,” I kept wondering how Ahmari had gone from conservative cultural crusader to genuine economic populist and, more important, whether any other social traditionalists could make the same leap.

The Woman Behind the ‘Hot Girl Summer’ Necklace

By day, Taylor Sade, 24, is a marketing manager. But after work hours, she hand-strings beads and stones on her bed in her Lower East Side apartment, cradled next to her two Himalayan cats. Those creations eventually add up to Vertigo, the buzzy brand behind the accessory draping the necks and waists of many young women this summer. The brand sells a collection of chokers, pendants and belts made of oversize beads that look as if they were plucked from the sand. The accessories, which cost $120 to $380, are often dark-hued but also glint in brighter colors, and they’ve shown up on many bikini-clad beachgoers — an embodiment of a self-assurance often associated with a “Hot Girl Summer.”

Potluck Club opened last summer on Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side — outside the old boundaries of Chinatown, in an area where younger Chinese businesses sidle up against tattoo parlors, oyster bars and candlelit cocktail lounges with disguised speakeasy entrances. Given all the threats facing Chinatown, Potluck Club could have come across as sentimental or wistful, but it’s not. It isn’t a great restaurant, but it knows how to have a good time. Just past that is a display of movie posters from the golden age of Hong Kong and Taiwanese cinema. A mural celebrates “Shaolin Popey,” the 1994 slapstick martial arts movie featuring two ass-kicking boy monks.

It’s like there’s no point in asking who started this because it’s a really, really old antagonism. I think that’s probably what’s most critical right now is that all of our entertainment, our news media, it’s all made in cities. And he’s really pretty horrible, and he doesn’t feed them enough, and that’s really sad. You’re going to have a flat tire, and the guy that pulls up to help you is going to tell your dad within minutes. It’s not like most books you’re going to see.

Virojt Changyencham | Moment | Getty ImagesOffice demand declinesThat flexibility is helping drive down demand for office space. By 2030, McKinsey predicts, demand for office space will be as much as 20% lower than it was in 2019, depending on the city. While remote and hybrid work is the big reason, the trend toward more desks in less space and shifts to automation were also factored into its analysis. Lower office space demand has companies rethinking how to make their real estate jibe with new work habits. Working in teams and increasing productivity are the top reasons office workers with flexibility give for being on-site.

Over the last decade, as dairy-free ice cream gained a foothold in the commercial market, its flavors were limited, its texture was often watery and its taste could be questionable. Today, many of these ice creams are smooth and creamy. They can twirl like soft serve and pack into scoops for waffle cones. And the options for both soft and hard versions have vastly improved as the plant-based milk and creamers used to make them have gotten better. “It was just as creamy as regular soft serve,” said Ms. Darnell, 26, who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

She is also a cast mate on the rebooted "Real Housewives of New York City," premiering July 16. Her two jobs play off each other: One day Lichy might sell a dated $5 million condo on the Upper West Side. While Lichy works with sellers to maximize their profit when listing a property, she's dabbled in flipping properties, too. Before Toddrick Brockington got his job at the Henry Street Settlement, a nonprofit that supports Lower East Side residents, he served 26 years in prison for homicide. Sometimes I lay there; sometimes I stand in the window and look out and try to orient myself for the day. That’s a peaceful time for me, because it’s like I’m the only one up and I have the world to myself. I’m in the process of reading “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell for the third time. A Flip Phone Keeps Me Sane

I still needed my smartphone for work, but I would use my flip phone when I ventured out into the world and on weekends. My Alcatel was a “dumb phone,” a Dostoyevsky-“The-Idiot”-of-phones that helped me see the simplicity in the world. The first week I had my flip phone, I read a book. Also, you’ll have to call me and describe that meme you’re trying to send, because my phone doesn’t do visuals. Most of the time, I hate the inconvenience of my flip phone.

In just 15 days, Kenwood Allen killed four people, prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office said on Wednesday. Mr. Allen, 33, was already charged late last year after prosecutors said he was part of a criminal operation that targeted people emerging from bars on Manhattan’s Lower East Side after a long night out. Prosecutors said that he would drug victims with fentanyl and other opioids before stealing their credit cards and other valuables, often leaving them unconscious on the street. On Wednesday, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, said that further investigation had revealed the full breadth of Mr. Allen’s criminal operation. He was also charged with 17 counts of robbery and attempted robbery.

“I messaged the girl whose room we rented, and I remember asking her, ‘How did you move to New York? How much did it cost?’ I got all the information I could from her, because I was so interested in hopefully living there one day,” said Ms. Pearce. By late 2021, with international travel again sanctioned, she had waited long enough. She got the windowless sublet, but knew that if she didn’t also get a job, she would have to leave the country when her 90-day tourist visa expired. So she focused on her job search, as well as studying for a graduate certificate in marketing and digital strategy, which she was earning online.

It happened Sunday evening on Governors Island at the start of “duel c,” a movement piece by Andros Zins-Browne. Along with several other audience members, I was standing inside “Moving Chains,” a large kinetic sculpture by Charles Gaines that is shaped like a ship open at both ends. The subject of “Moving Chains” is weighty: no less than slavery. “Duel c” wrestled with burdensome themes, but in a playful tone. This light approach to heavy subjects proved consistent across the two other dance performances I saw last week as part of River to River, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s free summer arts festival.

Cold plunging — the act of submerging oneself in frigid water — has grown in popularity. Diamond Spas & Pools, a luxury pool manufacturer in Colorado, told the Journal that its cold plunge orders have "increased 10 times" since 2019. "Cold plunging has also reduced my stress by allowing me to better focus on the present without anxiety creeping in." Cube's residential cold plunge bath is normally priced at just under $22,000, but is currently on sale for $17,999. Recent interest in cold plunging is indicative of the lengths the uber-rich are willing to go to achieve perfect health.

Yet some former Bang Bang employees said that McCurdy's meticulously curated image as a thoughtful progressive in a rough-and-tumble industry wasn't much more than good PR. At Bang Bang, "they just woke-wash everything," one former employee said. This kind of behavior extended to other Bang Bang employees. Ganser, the Bang Bang manager, also sent Wang a text comparing her behavior to her father's, who was in prison. Welcome to Richie’s World

For Richie Shazam, becoming a Bollywood princess was not a manifestation. It was a realization. The model, photographer and director thinks that the term “manifestation” has become a buzzword that removes accountability, she explained in Ludlow House, a social club on the Lower East Side, in between puffs from her turquoise-colored vape. “You could say, ‘I spoke something into existence,’” she said, “but what are you actually doing to realize it?”When she was growing up, she watched hours of Bollywood films in her bedroom in the Jamaica section of Queens, marveling at actresses like Kajol. “Seeing that rich brown skin and watching the beautiful Bollywood icons really allowed me to embody an identity behind closed doors,” she said, recalling that she told herself, “‘One day I’ll be able to be this person.’”
Some Chinatown residents benefited from the development boom, selling properties to developers or drawing more customers from increased foot traffic. Some residents have shown tentative support for the luxury buildings, saying they might make the neighborhood safer or bring in wealthier Asian residents who could boost Chinatown's economy. Manhattan Chinatown's housing stock is "really aged," which has led to costly fires, according to Thomas Yu, executive director of Asian Americans for Equality. Chinatowns and the pandemicMany debates surrounding luxury development and affordable housing were accelerated by the pandemic, which shuttered hundreds of businesses across Chinatowns. However, business owners who spoke with CNBC said Chinatown's businesses, though still recovering, are keeping the city's culture alive.

A Skeptic’s Tour of New York City’s Natural Wine Bars

ON THE CASE Lettie Teague ventured into the natural wine bars of New York City with an open mind and a battery of questions for the bartenders. I’ve had some natural wines that were pleasant and many that were not. So I decided to taste the wines in their natural habitat: natural-wine bars. You can find natural-wine bars all over the world, and New York City—on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, in particular—is a real stronghold. If I was going to get a clearer impression of natural wine and perhaps taste some better wines, these New York neighborhoods seemed like good places to start.
How Bjarke Ingels, Architect, Spends His Sundays

After Bjarke Ingels left Copenhagen for New York City in 2010, his first project in Manhattan was a real humdinger: The stark and pyramidal Via 57 West, an apartment building with a not-small hole sliced down the middle, allowing for a courtyard. Now Mr. Ingels is putting his stamp on other parts of the city, among them the Robert De Niro-backed Wildflower Studios, in Astoria, Queens. “Having spent a good chunk of his life in these environments, Bob has very specific feedback on the dressing and green rooms,” Mr. Ingels said of taking direction from the Academy Award winner and famous New Yorker. His firm is also involved in the East Side Coastal Resiliency project, an initiative to protect part of Manhattan, including East River Park on the Lower East Side, from rising waters because of climate change. “The more people you touch, the more opinions you solicit,” Mr. Ingels said of the divisive and long-term undertaking.

After a 20-second-long, caught-on-camera dispute, Codrington, 35, slashed Cunningham across the neck with a knife, leaving him to die, Essig said. At 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, Codrington entered a Lower East Side bar with a pit bull and a baseball bat, Essig said. Afterward, Essig said, Codrington went home, then said he’d “cool off” with a walk through the park. In May, a 48-year-old man was shot and killed riding a train between Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. Despite random acts, the number of crimes reported on public transit by September was averaging slightly below pre-pandemic levels, though ridership was also down.
