Gen Z is soft, millennials are embarrassing, boomers are evil, and no one has thought about Gen X in years. But late this spring, Pew announced it would no longer use generational labels such as millennial and Gen Z in its research. By and large, Cohen shares Duffy's view that generational labels make it tough for both experts and laypeople to distinguish between generational traits and universal, or multifactorial, occurrences. To its credit, Pew has been transparent in acknowledging how the use of generational labels may have tilted its analyses. Pew "does believe generational research can be a useful tool in the right context," Parker told me.

It took 73 years to find the wreckage of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. Decades later, Ballard revealed that the dive was actually a secret Cold War Navy mission. But the dive initially had nothing to do with the Titanic at all — it was a secret mission to find the wrecks of two nuclear submarines, the USS Scorpion and the USS Thresher. Of course, nobody knew that until 2008, when Ballard revealed the true nature of the mission to National Geographic. So, 23 years later, Ballard revealed the truth about his mission.

ANNEMASSE, France, July 15 (Reuters) - There were scenes of tears and pain as the 14th stage of the Tour de France turned into carnage, being halted for 25 minutes after a massive crash at the back of the peloton before two more riders hit the deck hard later on Saturday. The main incident occurred on a slippery descent with 146km left in the stage, with Movistar rider Antonio Pedrero forced to abandon the race after being carried off on a stretcher. In the descent of the Col de Saxel, France's Romain Bardet, second in the 2016 Tour de France, crashed on a bend at 60kph and after a long discussion with doctors, pulled out of the race, hiding tears behind his hands. Chaves's EF EasyPost team mate James Shaw crashed along with Bardet and the Briton was carried away on a stretcher. CNN —There’s nearly a 50-year age gap between the oldest Baby Boomer and the youngest member of Gen Z. As Pew President Michael Dimock put it, a common misconception about Baby Boomers’ past serves as a reminder of a key question we should be asking as we talk about Gen Z today. Cultural critic Louis Menand has pointed out that another important detail often gets overlooked when talking about this chapter in Baby Boomers’ past. And Gen Z may not be as ‘woke’ as you thinkCould our understanding of Gen Z’s politics – frequently described as liberal – also be missing part of the picture? Joe Raedle/Getty Images“In poll after poll, we have found enormous diversity among Gen Z and their views,” she says.

Barbie likely wouldn't exist if Mattel's founder hadn't stumbled across Bild Lilli, a plastic doll based on a comic strip. The first Barbie doll, from 1959, had Lilli's red lips, high blonde ponytail, and winged eyeliner. But these dolls had flat chests, big bellies, and squatty legs – they were built like overweight six- or eight-year-olds," Handler wrote. The newspaper began making Lilli dolls in 1955 because of the comic's popularity and to market the newspaper. "Here were the breasts, the small waist, the long, tapered legs I had enthusiastically described for the designers all those years ago," Handler wrote.

The two friends no longer fit with that satisfying click that comes from snapping together two Lego bricks. Though it must have taken a truck to haul away all of Louis' Lego, no neighbor reported seeing anything suspicious.

A jury on Monday convicted four members of the extremist group the Oath Keepers of seditious conspiracy. The trial, which started Dec. 12, included testimony from Brian Ulrich, a member of the Oath Keepers’ Georgia chapter who had pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy and obstruction of an official proceeding. ... I’m not afraid and I’m ready to f---ing go.”The four defendants were charged as part of the same seditious conspiracy case involving Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes that went to trial in October. Rhodes and Kelly Meggs, the leader of the group’s Florida chapter, were convicted of seditious conspiracy in November. The maximum sentence for seditious conspiracy — a rarely used Civil War era statute — is 20 years in federal prison.
The 12-member jury found Oath Keeper members David Moerschel, Joseph Hackett, Roberto Minuta and Edward Vallejo guilty of seditious conspiracy. Seditious conspiracy is a rarely prosecuted Civil War-era law that prohibits plotting to overthrow or destroy the government and carries up to 20 years in prison. A jury found Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and another Florida-based leader of the group guilty of seditious conspiracy in a separate trial in November. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta split the Oath Keepers seditious conspiracy case into two separate trials due to space limitations and the risks of COVID-19 contagion. Jurors heard testimony and evidence in the second Oath Keepers case for several weeks.
CNN —College freshman Dieunerst Collin’s road to internet meme fame started with a confused side-eye at a Popeyes in New Jersey. Collin, holding a Popeyes lemonade cup, gave the man a sideways glance, wondering why he had a camera in his face. The closing arguments on Wednesday marked the end of the second major seditious conspiracy trial stemming from the attack. The Oath Keeper members are accused of conspiring to block Congress from certifying Biden's election victory. Seditious conspiracy is a rarely prosecuted Civil War-era statute that carries up to 20 years in prison if convicted. In November, a jury convicted Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and a Florida chapter leader of seditious conspiracy, but acquitted three other Oath Keeper defendants of the charge. All five Oath Keepers in that case, however, were convicted of obstructing Congress from certifying the electoral votes - a charge that can also carry up to 20 years.
Authorities now say that a Mississippi woman who fatally shot two police officers was killed by one of the officers who returned fire during a shootout. But on Friday, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety released additional details. As Estorffe approached the vehicle, Anderson and Estorffe exchanged rounds resulting in fatal injuries to both individuals," the release stated. Anderson told the officers that she thought she was being followed by a person in a white pick-up truck. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has not said what sparked the shooting.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations did not immediately respond to a question about the juvenile's condition. One of the officers was pronounced dead at the scene, but the other died after initially being injured, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations said. Two officers were killed at a local Motel 6 after responding to a call in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Tate Reeves said he was "heartbroken" by the loss and was praying for the families as well as the "entire Bay St. Louis community." Bay St. Louis is a city located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 60 miles northeast of New Orleans.

An 82-year-old woman in Alabama was arrested this week after failing to pay her delinquent trash bill, authorities said. Code enforcement officers tried to call Menefield several times and attempted to contact her at her home, the statement said. When Menefield failed to appear in court, a warrant for “Failure to Pay-Trash” was issued, the statement said. Menefield has a history of failing to pay her trash bill, according to Reynolds’ statement. (Reuters) - The shooting death of teenager Michael Brown by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer prompted the U.S. Justice Department's most significant investigation of policing practices since the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. The DOJ also pointed out that “police departments in surrounding municipalities and the County” have practices similar to Ferguson, although that issue was “beyond the scope” of the investigation. In fact, federal officials even considered opening another investigation of the St. Louis police department for similar problems, Reuters reported in October 2020. Ferguson officials expressed concerns that the reforms required to stop exploitative policing in their city would “cripple city finances,” Reuters reported in March 2016. (A measure to institute a modest property tax increase to fund the reforms didn't get the required two-thirds majority vote.)
