☆ Medical schools and legislation aim to address a worsening doctor shortage that's already hitting rural communities

A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

The war for the first battleground electoral vote may have been decided this week before a single ballot was cast. The stadium is set to become the home for USL Championship League soccer team Oakland Roots starting in 2025. In a letter addressed to the fans ahead of the final home series, A’s owner John Fisher reflected on the team’s legacy in Oakland. “The A’s are part of the fabric of Oakland, the East Bay, and the entire Bay Area,” Fisher wrote. Countless dedicated staff members and Oakland Coliseum employees have poured their hearts into this team, and their efforts have meant so much to our community. The Oakland Coliseum sits in third place for the most no-hitters thrown (12), with the last being a perfect game by the New York Yankees’ Domingo German in 2023.

Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska's electoral votes. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes.

The Nebraska Examiner reported that without McDonnell, Republicans have "no path" unless a Democrat or nonpartisan lawmaker changes their mind. Nebraska and Maine are the only states that award some of their Electoral College votes by congressional district.
