On day one of Sam Bankman-Fried's criminal trial, assistant U.S. attorney, Danielle Sassoon, rattled off a lengthy list of potential witnesses who might be called to testify for either the government or the defense. The list, which was compiled jointly by both sides, was released during the afternoon session and included Bankman-Fried's brother, Gabe, as well his parents, Allan Joseph Bankman and his wife, Barbara Fried. Parents of the disgraced former CEO of FTX are themselves the subject of new scrutiny. Other entities that may take the witness stand included various venture funds and crypto-focused companies like Genesis, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, Third Point, Signature Bank, and Voyager Digital. Many of these businesses were hurt or wiped out by the collapse in cryptocurrency prices triggered in part by FTX's implosion.

Tech unicorn Carta filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of California in August against its former Chief Product Officer Heidi Johnson, demanding she turn over secret recordings of the company's top executives and board members. It's the second time the company has gone to federal court in order to prevent the release of what it says are damaging recordings. In court documents reviewed by Insider, Carta states that Johnson was fired in November 2022 for having a "polarizing" management style and for taking unauthorized leave. Shortly after her termination, both Johnson and Talton filed complaints with the company's board raising issues about her firing and the conduct of CEO Henry Ward. Additionally, Carta is seeking monetary damages from Johnson for breach of contract with the amount to be determined at trial.

Carbon accounting startup Plan A has just secured $27 million in a round led by Californian tech investor Lightspeed Venture Partners. Berlin-based Plan A, founded in 2017, is one of many startups helping big companies measure and manage their carbon emissions. Carbon accounting companies raised $5 billion at the sector's 2021 peak, per PitchBook, as venture capitalists and large asset managers piled into the buzzy category. One way Plan A differentiates itself is its steady pace, cofounder and CEO Lubomila Jordanova told Insider. Operating in a hype market can be tricky because it deflates the value of carbon accounting in the long term, she said.

PARIS – Competitors or not, SpaceX continues to be willing to launch for other satellite internet companies. The agreement covers 14 launches of the Canadian venture's Lightspeed internet satellites. SpaceX has used its rockets to launch communications satellites for companies that compete directly or indirectly with its global Starlink internet network. These deals come as an Amazon shareholder alleges the company snubbed SpaceX for launch contracts of the tech giant's Kuiper internet satellites. Earlier this summer Telesat announced a swap in the manufacturer of its Lightspeed satellites, with Canadian space company MDA taking the place of French-Italian manufacturer Thales Alenia Space.

LEO satellites operate 36 times closer to Earth than traditional ones so they take less time to send and receive information, leading to better and faster broadband service even in remote areas. "It is another big step forward on our path to get Lightspeed up there," Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg told Reuters. Telesat picked Elon Musk's SpaceX because it had "the best combination of price, performance, reliability and schedule tempo," Goldberg said. Satellite constellations have sapped large amounts of the U.S. launch supply in recent years with considerably large bulk launch orders like Telesat's SpaceX contract. SpaceX aims to nearly double its annual launch rate in 2023 thanks to its growing Starlink constellation.

Shares of Canadian telecommunications satellite operator Telesat surged on Friday after the company announced it would swap suppliers for its planned Lightspeed global internet network. Canadian space company MDA will now build the Lightspeed satellites, taking the place of French-Italian manufacturer Thales Alenia Space and resulting in "total capital cost savings" of about $2 billion, Telesat announced. The company expects to begin launching the first Lightspeed satellites in mid-2026, with global service beginning once the first 156 satellites are in orbit. Telesat stock surged as much as much as 64% with heavy volume in early trading from its previous close at $8.45 a share, before slipping slightly to closer to 50%. "I'm incredibly proud of the Telesat team for their innovative work to further optimize ... resulting in dramatically reduced costs," Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg said in a release.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationAug 11 (Reuters) - Satellite operator Telesat (TSAT.TO), has given space tech firm MDA (MDA.TO) a C$2.1 billion ($1.56 billion) contract to build 198 satellites for its low-earth orbit program. Telesat said it had earmarked $3.5 billion as capital expenditure for the Lightspeed project and that the MDA deal had helped it save $2 billion. The technology would also allow each satellite to be slightly smaller than the ones Telesat was previously considering. Telesat's Lightspeed network is designed to serve the connectivity requirements of enterprise and government users, with highly secure, resilient, low-latency broadband connectivity anywhere in the world. The company launched its first LEO 3 demonstration satellite aboard Rocket Lab's Electron rocket in July.

The investment into Mistral AI is just one of many this year by venture capitalists jostling for a seat aboard the AI rocketship. In the first six months of 2023, they plowed $15.2 billion into generative AI companies globally, according to Pitchbook data. The bulk of this sum comes from Microsoft (MSFT)’s $10 billion investment, announced in January, in OpenAI, the developer of popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. But even excluding Microsoft’s bumper deal, the value of VC investments in generative AI was up by almost 58% compared with the same period in 2022. “Buying a ‘dot-ai’ domain, and claiming to be an AI company… doesn’t really make you an AI company,” Jacobs told CNN.
