My household was conservative and I tend to vote Republican, but I never stick to the party for the sake of consistency. I've seen the state change politically, watching it go from blue to red as I went from childhood, to adulthood, to old age. President Biden was, quite frankly, too old four years ago, and he'll certainly be too old four years from now. As far as my dad was concerned, anyone beyond Medicare age, which Biden and Trump have long surpassed, should be passing the torch. I've been thinking about politics longer than both Biden and Trump; I've got them beat by one and four years respectively.

Opinion | Investing in Pediatric Care
  + stars: | 2024-07-20 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Why Medical Students Are Shunning Pediatrics,” by Aaron E. Carroll (Opinion guest essay, July 7):The dwindling number of physicians choosing to pursue pediatrics is a grave concern to me as a pediatric resident physician, particularly given the increasing number of children with complex medical needs and chronic conditions. Soaring rates of pediatric mental health challenges have also strained the general pediatricians who navigate providing care in busy clinic schedules while our patients wait months to see psychiatrists or developmental pediatricians. Dr. Carroll notes that low reimbursement for pediatric care is a key reason for lack of interest in the specialty, with about half of American children insured by Medicaid or CHIP. The evidence is clear that health in childhood predicts health later in life. Pediatricians have the opportunity to address issues that can lead to lifelong health challenges early, from diabetes to substance use, ultimately saving the health care system money.

After having my son nearly three years ago, I struggled with an almost debilitating embarrassment about my performance as a mother. His birth unleashed a sense that I somehow wasn't good enough, so I would have to overcompensate to be a good parent. I didn't know what to do, so I made an excuse and took my son somewhere else to play. That's why I went back to therapy two years ago when my son was 1. While many parents may feel shame in certain situations, I'm glad I sought out support, as I can now go anywhere with my son.

"It is a luxury, absolutely," Brooke Kimbrough, cofounder and CEO of Roots Surrogacy, told BI. All the surrogacy agencies BI spoke with said it's essentially never the case that someone opts for surrogacy simply for vanity reasons. Perhaps the primary drawback to pursuing concurrent surrogacy (that is, besides the high price tag) is the logistics of it. Jarret Zafran, founder and executive director at Brownstone Surrogacy, told BI that it's not necessarily only the ultrawealthy who pursue concurrent surrogacy. But he's still not totally sure why they chose to do concurrent journeys rather than space the children out a bit more.

My drugs of choice are social media and online car shopping. While certainly not as instantly gratifying as social media, these tasks gave me a sense of accomplishment when I finished. I've stopped scrolling on Instagram when I wake up, and I no longer feel compelled to check social media incessantly. Whenever I'm working on something now, I resist the urge to watch YouTube or scroll through social media. I still use social media, though I typically schedule content ahead of time and log out after posting.

It's entirely possible that there are Greenland sharks still living today that were swimming in the North Atlantic Ocean at the time. Some theories include the shark's slow growth rate and low metabolic rate, but research is ongoing. Scientists hope that unlocking the secrets of how these fish age could help humans live longer, healthier lives. "We want to look closely at some of these hallmarks to determine if the Greenland shark shows any signs of traditional aging," he said. While Greenland sharks' remarkable aging process has allowed them to survive centuries, it could also be a double-edged sword as their environment rapidly changes.

On X, Kei truck fans share pictures of mini trucks they spot in the wild. Most states lack Kei-specific regulation entirely, and so far, only 19 states allow Kei trucks on public roads. Seemingly overnight, Elena Ferrante — or rather, the novelist writing as Elena Ferrante — found worldwide acclaim. Her novels were everywhere: You couldn’t swing a tote bag without spotting one of her pastel-hued paperbacks on the subway, at the beach, in the airport. The four novels that make up the Neapolitan quartet rocketed her to fame. Readers appreciated the nuanced relationship between the main characters, Lenù and Lila, a delicate mixture of love, jealousy and abiding loyalty. Critics zeroed in on Ferrante’s intimate attention to women’s lives, both in the Neapolitan novels and in her other books, which many writers of her generation had not considered subjects of literary merit.

In my advice column, For Love & Money, I get a lot of big questions about paying for weddings. The key to all my advice is that a wedding is about exactly two people — and that's OK.Do you have your own questions about money and relationships? It seemed that what hurt the aunt most was that this niece later married the guy anyway, without a big wedding, inviting the aunt, or repaying her. I encouraged the bride to lean into the universally acknowledged truth that a person's wedding day is their own. The next morning, they would make lifelong promises of celibacy and obedience, and they were palpably elated by the prospect. There was a time where the church “maybe apologized for being Catholic,” he said later in the conversation. He and the other new priests agreed they were called to something different: advancing the Catholic faith, even the parts that could seem out of place in an increasingly hostile world. “The church is Catholic, and so we should announce that joyfully,” he said. Surveys tracking the opinions of priests have found that, starting in the 1980s, each new wave of priests in the United States is noticeably more conservative than the one before it, Dr. Vermurlen said.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden’s struggle to prove he’s got the strength and cognitive capacity for a second term is becoming an excruciating personal and national ordeal. While his interview performance was far stronger than the president’s often incoherent showing at the CNN debate in Atlanta, that’s not saying much. He appeared more composed and fluent than at the CNN debate. But Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman of California told CNN that the president needed to do a prolonged and live television interview unlike the recorded one on ABC. But increasingly, it seems as though the fear of a Trump term may be overwhelming satisfaction with Biden’s achievements.

They are lawyers and school board members, labor activists and faith leaders, lifelong Democrats and party newcomers. These are the people who make up the 3,939 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Some are elected, and some are selected — each state party has its own rules — for what is normally a ceremonial task: nominating their candidate for president. But in a — still unlikely — scenario that President Biden steps down as the nominee, they will suddenly be charged with picking a new nominee. Most of these delegates did not set out to become kingmakers in the Democratic Party, but rather to be part of a pro-Biden slate pledging support to the president.

The Wide, Wide World of Judy Chicago
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Emily Labarge | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like all women and all art, Judy Chicago contains multitudes. Across venues in Britain and France, six decades of Chicago’s distinctly feminist oeuvre show a remarkable range. Minimalist sculptures; psychedelic spray-painted car hoods; landscapes billowing with bright plumes of smoke; and paintings of swirling, hallucinatory flowers fill the galleries with Chicago’s hallmark bright colors and undulating line. Many works incorporate personal texts in tidy, looping cursive about gendered rejection, shame, longing and anger. These works foreground the female nude, its life-giving properties and implicit connection to the natural world.
