American Kuss crowned Vuelta champion, Groves wins in Madrid
  + stars: | 2023-09-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
The 29-year-old ended 17 seconds ahead of Denmark's Tour de France winner Vingegaard with Slovenia's Giro d'Italia winner Roglic one minute and eight seconds behind in third place. There was a celebratory mood amongst the Dutch team on the 101km 21st stage that concluded on a street circuit around the landmarks of Madrid. But the battle for the stage victory was a high-octane thriller as a small lead group featuring Groves and Remco Evenepoel was caught by the peloton in the final 500m. While Kuss celebrated the overall victory, Groves secured the green jersey for the points category -- the first Australian to achieve that in the Vuelta. When Kuss took the red jersey from Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) on stage eight, most thought he was just keeping it warm for either Vingegaard or Roglic.

Vingegaard wins Vuelta stage 13 on terrible day for Evenepoel
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Sept 8 (Reuters) - Jonas Vingegaard tamed the Tourmalet to win stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana, on a dramatic day which saw last year's winner Remco Evenepoel's challenge wither in the Pyrenees on Friday. The relentless climbing and downhill racing took its toll on many, including last year's winner Evenepoel, who now finds himself out of contention. Any early attacks had all been reeled in by a Jumbo-Visma team looking to control the race. With the five-man group left to battle behind Vingegaard, it was Kuss who attacked in the final kilometre to close the gap. Saturday's stage 14 is another mountain stage, a 156.5 kilometre ride from Sauveterre-de-Bearn to Larra-Belagua.

When Kirk Ferguson asked Sara Story to design the interiors of his new house in Austin, Texas, his request was unlike any she had heard before. “He wanted something like an opium den,” said Ms. Story, who spent much of her childhood in Texas but is now based in New York. “He really wanted a place with a ’70s vibe, and groovy.”Mr. Ferguson and Ms. Story had been friends for years, and after talking more about what the house could become, they arrived at a design concept. “It sounds a little silly,” said Mr. Ferguson, 55. “But it was Lenny Kravitz meets Italian ’60s meets ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.’”

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni Acquire Licensing RightsVENICE, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The make-up artist for Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" apologised on Saturday for offending people by giving the lead character a prosthetic nose, but said he only wanted authenticity. When the first trailer of the film surfaced last month, some critics complained that the nose pandered to Jewish stereotypes. Bernstein died in 1990 but his adult children have defended the make-up in the film, saying their father had had a "nice, big nose". But his make-up designer Kazu Hiro met the press and said he was surprised by the nose criticism. It is one of 23 movies competing for the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, which runs until Sept. 9.

Frenchman Soupe surprise winner of Vuelta stage seven
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sept 1 (Reuters) - Geoffrey Soupe came out on top in the predicted sprint finish to win a crash-ridden stage seven of the Vuelta a Espana on Friday. "I didn't think it was possible to win a stage because it's really, really, really fast in the sprint," Soupe said. "Yet today it's really nervous in the final (sprint), we have a lot of roundabouts, a lot of wind also. Groves, winner of stages four and five, managed to win the intermediate sprint to maintain his grip on the Green jersey. An earlier crash saw Geraint Thomas and Kim Heiduk of Ineos Grenadiers involved, with the Welshman needing treatment before returning to the bunch.

Julian Barry, whose scripts for a Broadway play and a Hollywood movie about Lenny Bruce, both titled “Lenny,” became definitive portraits of the comedian as a truth teller who drove himself mad in a righteous struggle against American hypocrisy, was found dead on Tuesday morning at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. His daughter Julia Barry said he had died overnight in his sleep. He had been receiving medical treatment for congestive heart failure and, in recent weeks, for late-stage kidney disease. Like Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon, Mr. Bruce died young (he was 40) and became a figure of continually renewed pop-culture lore. From 2017 until this year, a fictionalized version of Mr. Bruce was a recurring character on the Amazon Prime television show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

New York CNN —Fran Drescher, the president of the SAG-AFTRA union, is facing criticism for traveling to Italy to attend Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda festivities this past weekend as her 160,000-member actors union faces a Thursday deadline to go on strike. And we are concerned by the idea that SAG-AFTRA members may be ready to make sacrifices that leadership is not. An actors strike would bring most remaining productions to a halt, other than on some independent films not associated with studios. There has been no visible progress in ending the writers strike since it started on May 2. This could be the first actors strike against television shows and movie productions since 1980.

Democrat Donna Deegan pulled off an upset in Jacksonville, defeating front-running candidate Republican Daniel Davis on Tuesday to become the city's first female mayor. In Philadelphia, former state representative and City Council member Cherelle Parker won the Democratic nomination for mayor. She now faces Republican David Oh in the general election in November, a race she will most likely win in the largely Democratic city. Parker pledged to hire more police officers if she becomes Mayor of Philadelphia, where violent crime remains a chief concern across the nation's sixth largest city. She, like Deegan, would become her city's first female mayor if she wins, taking over for incumbent Democratic mayor Jim Kenney, who was term limited.
MIAMI — Donna Deegan, a Democrat, was elected mayor of Jacksonville on Tuesday, shaking up the politics of Florida’s largest city, where Republican mayors have been in power for all but four of the last 30 years. Ms. Deegan, a former television news anchor, defeated Daniel Davis, a Republican endorsed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had been seen as the likely favorite in the traditionally Republican stronghold. In recent years, Jacksonville had been the most populous city in the country with a Republican mayor, Lenny Curry, who is term-limited; that distinction now goes to Fort Worth, Texas. But while Florida has become decidedly more Republican — and while many have viewed Mr. DeSantis, a likely 2024 presidential contender, as all-powerful in state politics — Jacksonville has emerged as a swingy corner of the state.
Discovery just laid off dozens of people across its sports division. WBD Sports has the rights to NBA, NHL, and MLB, plus streaming services and brands like Bleacher Report. Discovery isn't done with cuts after all — the media giant laid off dozens in its sports division on May 16. WBD CEO David Zaslav and other company leaders have been drumming the message that 2023 is a "rebuilding" year after the massive layoffs and cost cuts that followed the completion of the WarnerMedia and Discovery merger in spring 2022. Between layoffs and open positions that were not filled, the total cuts at WBD Sports represented about 10% of its workforce.
