Maskot | Maskot | Getty ImagesBuying a new electric vehicle isn't the only way consumers can access a $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Perhaps the best known of them — the "new clean vehicle" tax credit — is a $7,500 tax break for consumers who buy a new EV. But many auto dealers are also passing along a $7,500 tax break to lessees, via a different (and, experts say, lesser-known) mechanism called the "qualified commercial clean vehicles" tax credit. This EV tax credit "leasing loophole" has likely been a key driver of increased leasing uptake in 2024, Barclays auto analysts said in an equity research note published in June. The $7,500 tax credit enables dealers to charge low monthly payments for leases, thereby helping "stoke demand" for EVs, Barclays wrote.

Can Boeing get back to its glory days?

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.

Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. We are more excited by the outperformance of non-interest income than we are disappointed with the miss on net interest income. However, the team added, many of the factors driving net interest income are uncertain heading into the second half of the year. We don't like to see guidance misses, but bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, which Wells Fargo has no real control over. Non-interest income increased 12% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

While universal basic income provides money to everyone, guaranteed income may provide either targeted or universal support. The organization did not provide comment, but the Foundation for Government Accountability's research lays out the reasons for its opposition to guaranteed income programs. Once they have access to guaranteed income, that often allows them to figure out ways to increase what they earn, she said. "Folks who press arguments about guaranteed income creating dependency aren't looking at the fact that what guaranteed income is actually allowing participants to do is make good choices," Bogle said. 'The status quo isn't working'Many other guaranteed income program participants have seen life-changing improvements, particularly when it comes to their earnings capability.

The company wants to sell just under 3,300 Ocean electric SUVs to American Leasing, lawyers said at a Wednesday hearing reported by TechCrunch. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Even as it prepared to deliver vehicles last year, it was scavenging parts from the personal EVs of the company's CEO and its CFO, Business Insider reported last month. It said selling 200 of the vehicles to American Leasing on an abbreviated timeline would bring in crucial cash to make payroll next month. Some creditors, including people who previously bought Fisker vehicles, are worried that the company will run out of resources to pay its debts and support owners.

CNN —In the first week of a new Trump administration, President Joe Biden’s climate wins would get put through the shredder. “He has said he’s going to come back with a vengeance,” former US special climate envoy John Kerry told CNN. He has railed against Biden’s climate policies at rallies and derided clean energy, vowing to push America back to fossil fuels. He has openly courted the oil industry at fundraising events, the Washington Post reported, promising regulation rollbacks in exchange for campaign cash. It could happen “very fast,” said David Bernhardt, who served as Interior Secretary in the Trump administration.

London CNN —A British startup may have found the answer to one of the frustrations of driving an electric car — waiting around for the battery to charge. That is much faster than the 20 minutes or so it currently takes some electric cars using a fast charger, such as a Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger. Nyobolt’s battery is compatible with a Supercharger, the startup told CNN. “This is many multiples higher than the warranties of much larger EV batteries on the road today,” it noted. In addition, there are currently “a lot of unknowns” with the niobium battery technology, he told CNN.

The new maintenance coordinator at an apartment complex in Dallas has been getting kudos from tenants and colleagues for good work and late-night assistance. That’s because the maintenance coordinator is an artificial intelligence bot that the property manager, Jason Busboom, began using last year. The bot, which sends text messages using the name Matt, takes requests and manages appointments. The team also has Lisa, the leasing bot that answers questions from prospective tenants, and Hunter, the bot that reminds people to pay rent. assistant: Lisa is professional and informative; Matt is friendly and helpful; and Hunter is stern, needing to sound authoritative when reminding tenants to pay rent.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the day when word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the farthest outpost in America. Many people do not realize that Emancipation did not legally end slavery in the United States, however. Some historians have described this convict leasing system as “worse than slavery,” because there was no incentive to avoid working those people to death. In fact, federal agencies are mandated to purchase goods from federal prisons, just as state or municipal agencies, including public schools and universities, often must consider sourcing from state penitentiaries. Labor that people have no meaningful right to refuse and that is enforced under conditions of total control is, unquestionably, slavery.

CNN —Nearly four years ago, while campaigning in the runup to the last presidential election, Donald Trump warned that President Joe Biden would “destroy” the oil industry. In the last three and a half years, US oil production — and oil and gas company profits — have broken records. That’s a 160% jump compared to the first three years of the pro-big-oil Trump administration, according to calculations by CNN. However, in March, the Biden administration approved ConocoPhillips’ massive Willow oil drilling project on Alaska’s North Slope, which holds around 600 million barrels of oil, angering climate advocates. Despite his mixed record with oil and gas companies, though, Biden has presided over a historic run for the industry, Kloza said.

Shopping center landlords have found themselves in a wholly unfamiliar position: For the first time in 20 years, demand for retail space outstrips supply. That demand has soared recently and, after years of muted construction and a purge of weak-performing properties, met a retail market with less available space. Properties that survived the purge signed up tenants that would draw more shoppers and give them more reason to linger. That meant more restaurants and venues that promote recreational experiences, like ax throwing and, more recently, pickleball. It also meant less space for traditional retailers that weren’t performing as well, like bookstores and apparel brands.
