The hundreds of mysterious New Jersey drone sightings are sparking mounting demands for a more forceful federal response, calls that come as even more sightings are being reported in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Overnight, 79 sightings were reported across New Jersey alone, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. An ongoing investigation leads officials to believe previously reported New Jersey sightings over the Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County and Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster were indeed drones, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. “The feds can’t control the air space, and yesterday my phone didn’t stop with drone sightings messages,” he said. “These are drones, unmanned aerial systems that have been used as weapons of war around the globe.”

Andrew Witty, the head of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of United Healthcare, wrote that he understands “people’s frustrations” with the American health care system. Our mission is to help make it work better,” Witty said in his op-ed, titled "The Health Care System Is Flawed. “While the health system is not perfect, every corner of it is filled with people who try to do their best for those they serve,” he wrote. “That’s Brian’s legacy, one that we will carry forward by continuing our work to make the health system work better for everyone,” Witty concluded. Smith & Wesson voluntarily agreed, among other product safety changes, to make magazine disconnects available as an option on all its pistols. “I can’t really go around talking about how there needs to be more gun safety for 25-year-old men who know better,” she said. But in a second interview months later, Skipper said that after talking with NBC News she had come around to the idea that more guns should have magazine disconnects. And law enforcement agencies that previously required magazine disconnects in standard-issue weapons have largely moved to guns without them. Magazine disconnects are “becoming much less common for sure.”Consumers may have moved on, but the deadly accidents have persisted.

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, was not insured by the company, the overarching business that owns it said. There is no record that Mangione, 26, was ever insured by the company, UnitedHealth Group said. “So that’s possibly why he targeted that company,” Kenny said. Mangione was arrested Monday at an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald’s after he was recognized from photos distributed by police, authorities said. New York police said Mangione will be brought back to New York, arrested and charged with murder in Thompson's killing.

CNN —Luigi Mangione has retained a high-powered New York attorney to represent him as he faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, CNN has learned. “She’s got as much experience as any human being, especially in the state court,” one longtime New York prosecutor told CNN. As of Friday, however, there were indications Mangione “may waive” his extradition next week, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Pennsylvania state Judge Dave Consiglio denied Mangione bail on Tuesday related to both state dockets, saying he would remain at the Huntingdon State Correctional Institution. Neither Mangione, nor his mother, were insured by UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest private health insurer, a UnitedHealth Group spokesperson told CNN. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged to pardon US Capitol rioters on Day One, but one month before Inauguration Day it’s not clear who among the hundreds of convicted rioters, defendants awaiting trial and remaining fugitives would receive clemency. In a Time Magazine interview conducted last month and published Thursday, the president-elect said he would look at rioters’ cases individually. Some judges in Washington, DC, have also been publicly critical of Trump’s attempts to whitewash the riot’s causes and violence. One major question has been where a line might be drawn among the Capitol riot defendants who would be eligible for Trump’s clemency, and what would qualify as violent versus non-violent actions. One judge, Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, made pointed comments in a hearing for a Capitol riot defendant two weeks after this year’s election.

Skepticism over government responseOne New Jersey lawmaker is accusing federal officials of lying about the presence and purpose of the mysterious drones. Connecticut State Police announced Friday they have deployed a drone detection system to assist in investigative efforts into unauthorized drone sightings reported over Fairfield County. Josh Shapiro said his administration is “aware of” the reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. Residents in New York’s Rockland County reported drone sightings starting as early as November. A total of 791,597 drones are registered with the FAA, split almost evenly between commercial drones and recreational drones.

WASHINGTON — Key House and Senate lawmakers are demanding top federal law enforcement officials immediately brief them about mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey and New York, as the White House downplayed any potential threats to national security or the public. But lawmakers say that they — and the public — need more information after weeks of sightings in New Jersey and other states. “But the public deserves to know more, and it’s up to the FBI and Homeland Security to brief the public immediately. For weeks, residents have been spotting and taking videos of drones, which officials have described as commercial-grade devices and not typical “hobbyist” drones. "We’re going to try to get answers, and we’ll go from there.”So far, an all-member House briefing on the drones has not been scheduled, though some individual members have been briefed.

Country music star Morgan Wallen was in court Thursday when he pleaded guilty to throwing a chair from a six-story rooftop bar in Nashville earlier this year. He was arrested in April after the incident at fellow country singer Eric Church's bar, Chief's, in Nashville's popular Broadway district. An arrest affidavit said the chair Wallen threw landed about 3 feet (1 meter) from officers, who talked to witnesses and reviewed security footage. Witnesses told officers that they watched Wallen pick up a chair, throw it over the roof and laugh about it. I never will make an excuse,” Wallen told Billboard in an interview two years after the controversy that nearly derailed his career.

As such sightings continue, New Jersey residents have taken to social media to share images and videos of the drones flying above them. On Monday, a group of 20 mayors from Morris County wrote a letter to Murphy expressing “deep concern” and emphasizing the impact on 500,000 county residents and officials. That inaccuracy was unintentional, the inspector general found. Of those 23, three informants entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 11 entered the grounds. Republicans on Capitol Hill have repeatedly clashed with top officials at the Justice Department and FBI over the riot, most notably over suggestions that FBI informants helped instigate the attack. Other Republicans, like Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, have specifically asked the inspector general to include information about how paid informants were used during the riot. “This is not violence orchestrated by FBI sources or agents.”Those theories have public support too.
