Israel pressed on with its bombardment of Lebanon on Friday after issuing widespread evacuation warnings in the country’s south, as the conflict with Hezbollah militants showed no sign of abating despite a U.S.-led push for a cease-fire. Some of the Israeli strikes, which came as Lebanon celebrated its independence day, hit near the southern port city of Tyre, following calls by the Israeli military for civilians to evacuate entire towns in the area and flee more than 20 miles north. Bombings also targeted the Dahiya, the area near Beirut that is in effect controlled by Hezbollah and has been hit hard in recent days. Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on Friday killed two paramedics south of Tyre. More than 145 medical workers in Lebanon have been killed in the line of duty since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began last October, according to the U.N. World Health Organization.

As of Nov. 9, an estimated 35% of U.S. adults had gotten the new flu vaccine, and nearly 18% had received the new Covid vaccines, CDC data shows. The vaccination rate for the flu as of October was roughly equivalent to the same time last year, the CDC found. The rate of Covid vaccination is also similar to last November, around 15%. The new CDC report warns that flu, Covid and RSV can cause serious illness, particularly for people ages 65 and up and those with certain medical conditions. A second CDC report released Thursday found low vaccination coverage among residents of nursing homes.

A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted late on Wednesday for the seventh time in a year, spewing fountains of lava and smoke, the country’s meteorological office said, but there were no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure. The eruption started with little warning at 11:14 p.m. local time Wednesday and created a fissure just under two miles long. The activity is estimated to be considerably smaller than the previous eruption in August, Iceland’s meteorological office that monitors seismic activity said. An American citizen has died at a popular adventure spot in Laos where alcohol tainted with methanol has been blamed for a spate of poisonings in recent days.
