That's certainly what ESPN executives thought, and they wanted to tie in Stevenson's fight against Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight world championship with the opening night of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. It certainly makes sense from a programming standpoint, giving ESPN a Las Vegas lead-in as it promotes both events. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told fighthype.com that's also why a fight will take place on the Thursday before the Super Bowl, which is Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. Top Rank president Todd duBoef said, however, other events such as the NFL draft in Las Vegas last year had other attractions tied to them that made the overall experience a success. That led to discussions about staging a fight night that could feed off the F1 publicity and even draw those in town primarily to see the race.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 14 (Reuters) - General Motors has formally registered with Formula One's governing body to provide power units to a proposed Andretti Cadillac team from 2028, the U.S. carmaker announced on Tuesday. "We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit," said GM President Mark Reuss in a statement issued ahead of this weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, one of three races in the United States. "With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we'll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. Formula One will have new engine regulations from 2026, with GM set to be the seventh manufacturer if Andretti secure approval. "Engineering a F1 power unit will advance GM’s expertise in areas including electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls and software systems," the carmaker said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — General Motors said Tuesday it has registered with Formula One's governing body to become an engine supplier starting in 2028 in what is seen as a huge boost to Michael Andretti's bid to join the global motorsports series. “We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” GM President Mark Reuss said. GM in January announced its partnership with Andretti Global under its Cadillac banner on Andretti's application to join F1. GM doesn't have its own F1 power unit and said its effort would be in conjunction with an existing manufacturer. If Andretti gets approved to join an expanded F1 grid, he would have to use another manufacturer's engine until 2028.

The up-and-coming indie twang band Wednesday released a track called “Formula One” on their 2023 album. Glynn Wedgewood, COTA's senior vice president of music and entertainment, says the track first introduced live music performances with Elton John in 2015. “Artists in Residency can really help bridge that gap.”Tiësto, a lifelong F1 fan, released the album “Drive” in April, featuring an F1 racing helmet on the cover. The Vegas race is the most expensive event on this year’s calendar. The mastermind behind the “Barbie” soundtrack already knows there’s a big crossover between music fans and F1 fans.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The famous fountains at the Bellagio won't be very visible this week amid the roar of Formula One racing on the Las Vegas Strip, and gondoliers won't be serenading tourists at the Venetian resort. The new five-year agreement covers 5,000 employees at two Wynn Resorts properties and follows similar deals for 35,500 workers with rivals Caesars Entertainment (CZR.O) and MGM Resorts International (MGM.N) earlier this week. The deal with Wynn and the Culinary Workers and Bartenders Unions marks the end of negotiations between the unions and the largest casino operators in the city. The final agreement, with Wynn Resorts, came early on Friday, a few hours before the strike deadline. The deal, when ratified, would provide “outstanding benefits and overall compensation to our employees,” Wynn said in a statement. A strike loomed as a major disruption to a series of big events, starting with the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a Formula 1 auto race along The Strip that is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors late next week. Along with the Formula 1 race, Las Vegas is the site of the National Finals Rodeo in December and the Super Bowl in February. Bill Hornbuckle, the chief executive of MGM, said in a Wednesday earnings call that his company had sold more than 10,000 tickets to the Grand Prix and expected to bring in $60 million in extra hotel revenue in the days ahead.

Casino resort operators have been earning record profits from a steady post-pandemic recovery in Las Vegas tourism. Visits to the city in September were 4% lower than in the same period in 2019, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. LAS VEGAS (AP) — MGM Resorts International, the largest employer on the Las Vegas Strip, was close to reaching a tentative deal with the hotel workers union, the casino company’s CEO said as the clock ticked closer to a union deadline for a sweeping strike. “This deal, when announced, will do just that.”During a break in bargaining, the union’s chief contract negotiator said he welcomed Hornbuckle’s sentiments. The union caught a break at dawn Wednesday when it reached a tentative deal with Caesars that covers 10,000 workers at the company’s flagship Caesars Palace, as well as Flamingo, Harrah’s, Horseshoe, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, Cromwell and Linq. But experts say a walkout isn’t likely now that the union has a blueprint for a contract after reaching its breakthrough deal with Caesars. That includes walkouts in Hollywood, UPS’ contentious negotiations that threatened to disrupt the nation’s supply chain, and the ongoing hotel workers strike at Detroit’s three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The labor union representing tens of thousands of Las Vegas hospitality workers announced Wednesday that it had reached a tentative deal with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, a major breakthrough that could help avert an unprecedented strike at more than a dozen hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. A walkout could still happen if deals aren't reached by 5 a.m. Friday with MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts. Negotiations with MGM Resorts were scheduled for Wednesday and Wynn Resorts on Thursday. Whether it's streaming or traditional TV, sports keep audiences coming back to their screens — and Netflix is working on getting more into the game. Netflix announced it would broadcast "The Netflix Cup" live, a matchup between athletes that appeared in the Formula 1 docuseries and the golf series "Full Swing." Even though customers are fleeing traditional TV, from the cable-TV bundle to broadcast, those that stick around often do so for the live sports. That showed in September, when the return of the National Football League and college football seasons propelled both broadcast and cable-TV viewership. It has been a gradual move toward both sports and live streaming — Netflix had technical issues when it aired the finale of reality show "Love is Blind" earlier this year — but one the streamer appears ready to make.

MGM Resorts could be in for a big rally in the new year thanks to a jam-packed events calendar on the Las Vegas Strip, according to Truist. This event was held in Las Vegas last year, but Jones noted that comps will be easy to beat as the omicron Covid variant breakout hindered turnout. Other events slated to take place on the strip include the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in the third quarter and the electric Daisy Carnival in the second quarter. Attendance to the former is expected around 170,000, while turnout for the latter is forecast at more than 400,000, Truist said. Still, he thinks that "the number and quality of events planned for Vegas should drive relative outperformance."
