Heightened geopolitical tensions have triggered volatility in crude oil prices, but one strategist is looking keenly for opportunities in the energy sector. Stephen Ellis, energy and utilities strategist at Morningstar, said oil market volatility does present challenges and urged investors to be patient, which "regularly pays off within energy." Brent crude oil prices were trading around $86.50 on Apr. 'Quality' names within energy Ellis said he searches for quality names when selecting stocks in the energy space. "All of these are 'moaty' firms that have some upside to our fair value estimates, even in a period of high oil prices," Ellis explained.

Ms. Xu ignored her. “If you come at 12 o’clock, the aunties will give you less food,” Ms. Xu said, speaking softly. Ms. Xu is familiar with the rhythms of the Tongxinhui Community Canteen because she eats there every day to save money. “Only when you save money will you feel safe,” she said. Researchers studied racial bias in hiring by sending over 83,000 fake résumés to big US companies. The auto services industry was among those most likely to show a preference for résumés containing white-sounding names. But in the most extreme instances, those doing the hiring favored résumés that might be presumed to be from white candidates by 24%, on average. Already, some people in fields like tech who have seen cuts in recent years are applying to job after job with little luck. Retail traders bought billions of dollars worth of cash equities over the past week on net, according to data compiled by JPMorgan's Peng Cheng. With those gains, he said traders bought into Apple and Alphabet , which have both largely sat out of the broader market rally this year. By comparison, investors bought more than half a billion dollars of Alphabet when accounting for outflows. Neither tech stock made the list of top 25 securities by retail net inflows in the previous week. Outside of big tech, Cheng noted that retail investors snapped up shares of beat-down Boeing , which is facing a crisis surrounding its 737 Max 9s after a door panel blew out midflight.

Laggard stocks that have underperformed the broader market could offer investors a good portfolio hedge, according to Evercore ISI. "We believe these stocks will outperform should the market continue higher as investors realize their unique earnings trajectory and valuation appeal," he said. "We also believe that these names will outperform in a correction given they have not participated fully in 2024's momentum." Evercore ISI has assigned the stock an outperform rating, although most analysts covering the stocks rate it as a hold. Most analysts covering the name have assigned it a buy rating — in line with Evercore ISI's outperform rating — with analyst consensus seeing a 5% rally ahead.

The S & P 500 Volatility Index finished the week near 15 and is in a clear three- month uptrend from its mid-December low near 12, even as the S & P 500 has gained 10% since then. In fact, Friday the market minimized the headline damage to a mere two-thirds-percent dip in the S & P 500 through its signature rotational impulse. Some indicators — such as speculators remaining net short S & P 500 futures and brokerage strategists' muted index targets — imply the helpful wall of worry is not quite fully scaled. Since then, the S & P has delivered a 16.7% annualized total return, even after two bear markets and two other severe/prolonged corrections. And the S & P is only up 7% from its high 26 months ago, hardly in thin air.

Jim Cramer explains why the market rallied on Thursday
  + stars: | 2024-02-29 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer told investors why he thinks the market was able to rally on Thursday, citing continued momentum in the tech sector and new inflation data suggesting the economy might be amenable to interest rate cuts. The Nasdaq Composite advanced to its first record high since 2021, popping 0.9% as tech and chip stocks saw gains. Salesforce also issued a light forecast on Wednesday night, but the stock managed to recover and finished up about 3% on Thursday, bringing up other tech stocks with it, Cramer said. And a "usually tempered" Citi analyst indicated on Thursday he was bullish on semiconductors, which bodes well for AI stocks, according to Cramer. "Now, there were some laggards today, of course, I get that—there were plenty of safety stocks that weren't so safe," Cramer said.

Large-cap fund managers are starting to shy away from several of the biggest companies in the S&P 500, according to a recent report from UBS. President Biden is facing new pressure to block Nippon Steel’s acquisition of the iconic manufacturer U.S. Steel, this time from environmental groups that say the tie-up would set back America’s efforts to curb climate change. In interviews, environmental activists working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions say the merger would bring together two steel giants that are laggards on transitioning away from fossil fuels. Researchers at Industrious Labs, a nonprofit pushing to decarbonize steel and other heavy industries, drew on both companies’ public disclosures to calculate that Nippon and U.S. Steel are relatively high emitters of heat-trapping gases from steel production. Three U.S. Steel facilities — in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois — combine to emit more greenhouse gases in a year than a comparable number of coal-fired power plants, the researchers estimate. Officials from Nippon and U.S. Steel say they are pursuing multiple strategies to decarbonize by 2050, including high-grade steel production in more efficient electric-powered furnaces and using hydrogen-injecting technology in blast furnaces, and that their merger will advance those efforts.

"The Magnificent Seven stocks generally are starting to run out of steam at this point because their valuations are getting pretty full at this point of time," Morningstar's Chief Markets Strategist David Sekera told CNBC Pro on Feb. 2. However, Sekera thinks things are looking up for small-caps and value stocks — the latter of which he says are trading at an 11% discount relative to Morningstar's fair value and look like a "good area for investors to overweight in U.S. stocks right now." Tech stocks The chief strategist remains bullish on tech, albeit outside of the Magnificent Seven, and named Cognizant Technology Solutions and Snowflake as picks to play the theme. Value in energy The energy sector — one of the laggards of the stock market last year — is also on Sekera's radar. Morningstar gives stocks a rating of between one and five stars, with a top rating indicating that the shares are undervalued.
