  + stars: | 2024-08-29 | by ( Arjun Kharpal | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Nvidia issued market-beating revenue guidance for its fiscal third quarter of $32.5 billion. Nvidia reported July quarter revenue on Wednesday of more than $30 billion, up 122% year on year. Nvidia shares fell on about 6% Thursday, as the company's fiscal second-quarter gross margin dipped slightly, and its revenue beat was eclipsed by a backdrop of increasingly lofty expectations. The pullback in the stock on Thursday also comes after a meteoric rally, with Nvidia's shares rising more than 150% this year to date. The company also announced a $50 billion stock buyback program.

Intel is working with advisors including Morgan Stanley to help defend itself against activist investors, according to people familiar with the matter, as CEO Pat Gelsinger attempts to turn around the struggling chipmaker. While Intel has faced activist pressure in the past, no new campaign has been formally launched and it isn't clear if an activist investor has been in contact with the company's board. Morgan Stanley has previously worked with Intel, including in the company's 2022 spinoff of Mobileye . The sources with knowledge of Morgan Stanley's latest involvement asked not to be named due to confidentiality. Representatives for Intel and Morgan Stanley declined to comment.

During Google's Pixel phone launch on Tuesday, a product director named David Citron took the stage to show off the mobile capabilities of the company's new AI assistant, Gemini. Rivals are preparing consumers for a future of AI, but Google's Gemini features are real and are shipping — at least for testing purposes — now. Google's kickoff on Tuesday could put renewed pressure on Apple, as the two smartphone market leaders race to integrate AI into their operating systems. Google's most important presentation on Tuesday was Gemini Live, its next-generation assistant. The company said Apple's approach is less private than Google's, because Gemini "doesn't require hand-off to a third-party AI provider you may not know or trust."

Apple CEO Tim Cook attends the annual developer conference event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S., June 10, 2024. Apple's third quarter, which ends in June, is traditionally the company's slowest quarter of the year by sales. This year, the "main event" won't be Apple's earnings, wrote Barclays analyst Tim Long, it's what the company says about the September quarter, which is nearly one-third over. Apple revealed Apple Intelligence in June, and the first preview version of some features was released earlier this week. JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee expects Apple to reassure investors that the coming iPhone replacement cycle will include better-than-expected revenue, thanks to AI.

Apple Intelligence, the company's forthcoming artificial intelligence system, could spur a fresh cycle of iPhone upgrades and hardware sales. One question Cook was willing to partially address was about the company's spending on AI servers. "Embedded in our results this quarter is an increase year over year in the amount we're spending for AI and Apple Intelligence," Cook told CNBC's Steve Kovach on Thursday. The rise in Apple's capital expenditure is tiny compared to its mega-cap peers, such as Microsoft, Google , and Meta . Zuckerberg also wants to ensure that Apple won't fully control the next major technology shift, if it turns out to be AI.

Qualcomm reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations, particularly for sales, and provided strong guidance for the current quarter. Qualcomm said it expected between $9.5 billion and $10.3 billion in sales in the current quarter, compared to Wall Street expectations of $9.71 billion. Handset sales rose 12% on a year-over-year basis to $5.9 billion in revenue, in line with analyst estimates from StreetAccount, which suggests that a deep slump in smartphone sales over the past two years is abating. Those three hardware lines are reported together as QCT, the company's chip business, which in total reported $8.1 billion in sales, up 12% year-over-year. Qualcomm also collects licensing fees from companies that integrate 5G or other cellular technologies into their products, reported as QTL sales.

AMD says data center sales more than doubled in a year
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
AMD shares are down about 6% in 2024, even though the company is the second-largest vendor of data center GPUs after Nvidia . Investors want to see AMD take market share away from its longtime rival Nvidia with its MI300X AI chip and signal growth in its data center AI business. Earlier this year, AMD said it expected $4 billion in AI chips sales this year, or about 15% of the company's expected sales. AMD AI chip sales are reported in the company's Data Center segment, which grew 115% year-over-year to $2.8 billion, driven by an increase in AI GPU shipments, AMD said. Sales for PCs are reported in the company's Client segment, which rose 49% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, versus expectations of $1.43 billion from Street Account.

Apple said on Monday that the artificial intelligence models underpinning Apple Intelligence, its AI system, were pretrained on processors designed by Google, a sign that Big Tech companies are looking for alternatives to Nvidia when it comes to the training of cutting-edge AI. Apple's choice of Google's homegrown Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for training was detailed in a technical paper just published by the company. Separately, Apple released a preview version of Apple Intelligence for some devices on Monday. Apple doesn't name Google or Nvidia in its 47-page paper, but did note its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on "Cloud TPU clusters." "This system allows us to train the AFM models efficiently and scalably, including AFM-on-device, AFM-server, and larger models," Apple said in the paper.

Apple on Monday released the first version of Apple Intelligence, its suite of artificial intelligence features that will improve Siri, automatically generate emails and images and sort notifications. The new software called Apple Intelligence was released in the developer beta of iOS 18.1. Apple Intelligence is an important initiative for Apple. Investors hope the tight integration of AI with Apple's operating system can spur a big wave of upgrades in the coming years, especially since the system will only work on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and newer. "We expect this iPhone cycle to remain strong for longer as AI feature sets (software and possibly hardware) improve in the 2025 iPhone," Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note on Monday.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the Meta Connect event at Meta headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 27, 2023. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been assembling a large stockpile of Nvidia chips, spending billions of dollars so his company can develop and train advanced artificial intelligence models. But even he says the AI hype may be driving too much investment. Meta debuted its latest Llama AI model on Tuesday. The model, dubbed Llama 3.1, comes in three different versions, with one variant being the biggest and most capable AI model from Meta to date.

Meta on Tuesday announced the latest version of its Llama artificial intelligence model. Nvidia is a key Meta partner and provides the social networking giant with the computing chips called GPUs to help train its AI models, including the latest version of Llama. For example, Meta said that Llama model announced on Tuesday was trained on 16,000 of Nvidia's H100 graphics processors. But open-source models can cost hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to create. There aren't many companies that are financially able to develop and release open-source models with similar amounts of investment.

Huang's comments came during the Q&A period of Nvidia's first shareholder meeting since the company's stock began to surge, after Wall Street's heightened interest in the company's dominant position in the AI chip market. Since last year's meeting, the company has been on a historic run: Nvidia's stock is up 193%, its shares split 10-1, the company passed a $3 trillion valuation and it briefly reached the status of most valuable company in the U.S. The first question Huang answered Wednesday was about the company's competition, as traditional chipmakers and startups alike release products intended to challenge Nvidia's more than 80% market share in AI chips. Nvidia shareholders were pleased with the company's performance and approved a nonbinding vote on executive compensation called "say on pay." Nvidia executives are paid in a combination of salary and various kinds of restricted stock units.

Micron shares fell about 3% in extended trading on Wednesday as investors looked past better-than-expected results and focused instead on a revenue forecast that was in line with estimates. Analysts were expecting earnings per share of $1.05 on revenue of $7.6 billion. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted the company's AI business in a statement while saying that its smartphone and PC markets remain sluggish. On a call with analysts, Micron said that its high bandwidth memory, the kind used in AI chips, is sold out through 2025. "We believe that Micron will be one of the biggest beneficiaries in the semiconductor industry in the multiyear growth opportunity driven by AI," Mehrotra said.

Since briefly becoming the world's most valuable company last week, Nvidia has dropped for three consecutive trading days and is now down 13% from its peak. Nvidia's decline brought with it a slide in chipmakers and other tech companies that have been tied to the artificial intelligence boom. Super Micro Computer , which sells servers packed with Nvidia's AI chips, slid 8.7 percent, and Dell , which competes in that market, fell 5.2%. Last week, it topped Apple and Microsoft as the most valuable U.S. company with a market capitalization over $3 trillion before giving up some of those gains. Later this year, Nvidia will start shipping its next-generation AI chips, called Blackwell, that some analysts say could kick off another cycle with significant growth for the chipmaker and its partners.

Apple said on Monday that it has stopped issuing loans through Apple Pay Later, its buy-now-pay-later program that launched last year. The move comes after Apple said it would start allowing installment loans later this year in its Apple Pay checkout process through third-party companies, such as Affirm , and credit and debit cards from issuers, such as Citigroup. Apple said it would no longer issue Apple Pay Later loans, which enabled customers to buy products online and pay in four interest-free installments, at prices up to $1,000. Users with open loans will continue to have access to Apple Pay Later features to manage and pay their loans, Apple said. Before it was discontinued, Apple Pay Later enabled users to apply for loans within the iPhone Wallet app, and approved users would see a "Pay Later" option when checking out online.
