He and an industrial designer named Colin Kelly came up with four prototypes called Splash Spots that have eye appeal. The Fire Department worries about low water pressure when hydrants are open, a potentially serious problem when a call comes in and fire trucks go out. Sprinkler caps, which firehouses can make available on request, cut the flow to 25 to 30 gallons a minute, by Kelly’s calculations. Splash Spots send out about half that, and unlike the Fire Department’s sprinkler caps, they can be turned on and off, saving even more when a sprinkler is not needed. “I was out for a run over the July 4 weekend, and I passed a street with a hydrant with a spray cap,” Gordon said.

CNN —The Polynesian demigod Maui was so powerful he could raise islands up from the ocean floor and capture the sun to slow it down. We know Lahaina will be rebuilt, and the government response — city, state and federal — will be a huge part of that. “You can beat the drum of ‘women’s rights’ and defend tooth-and-nail women’s sports, so long as you only do so to denigrate trans women.”For more on the World Cup:Shaista Aziz: This Women’s World Cup has been unlike any other. While the soccer star was not the only US player to do so, she has a contentious history with the former president. In a speech introducing the star soccer player, the president praised Rapinoe’s role in securing equal pay for the US women’s soccer team and her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. “For nearly 40 years, the US Women’s National Soccer Team has epitomized what it means to be a champion. Mr. Kelly said that his recollection of Mr. Trump’s comments to him was based on notes that he had taken at the time in 2018. Mr. Kelly provided copies of his notes to lawyers for one of the F.B.I. officials, who made the sworn statement public in a court filing. “President Trump questioned whether investigations by the Internal Revenue Service or other federal agencies should be undertaken into Mr. Strzok and/or Ms. Page,” Mr. Kelly said in the statement. CNN —Approximately 100 letters containing a white powder have been received by state legislators and public officials across Kansas, officials said, setting off an investigation that includes state and federal agencies. Republican state Rep. Stephen Owens said he also received one of the letters and believes the others who received them are fellow Republicans. A copy of the letter received by Kansas Rep. In one Little League game in Alabama, a coach was seen grabbing an umpire and throwing him to the ground, while kids looked on in bewilderment. In another viral video, parents in Texas aggressively yelled at an umpire, who ended the game early over the disruption. It doesn’t mean I enjoy the way you are calling the game,” Wood told the umpire. The average pay for a youth umpire is $45 to $85 a game, according to the Babe Ruth League. Kelly Peterfriend, who also has a son in Ramsey’s Little League, says she gets most animated during her son’s soccer games.
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Not to worry, said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a veteran of debt limit battles. McConnell’s reassurance that all will work out in the end is validated by history, but that doesn’t mean this time couldn’t be different. “If female voters are key to a Donald Trump victory in 2024, the former president should be in big trouble – but he doesn’t seem to care,” Jill Filipovic observed. “The town hall audience – selected on the basis of their intention to vote in the Republican primary in New Hampshire – appeared to be made up mostly of Trump fans.
Republican efforts to restrict gender-transitioning treatment hit roadblocks in three states on Wednesday. Across the country, transgender rights have emerged this year as a defining legislative issue, with Republicans enacting sweeping new restrictions in states they control. In just the past few weeks, new bans have been signed into law in Idaho, Indiana and North Dakota, with similar policies still under consideration in other states. Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill that would have revoked the medical licenses of doctors who provided gender-transitioning care to children and allowed people who received that treatment as children to sue their doctors. In Missouri, a state judge blocked new restrictions, which were set to take effect on Thursday, until at least Monday evening.
Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon, freshly ousted from their perches at top cable networks, have hired the same powerhouse lawyer to navigate their exits. The prominent Hollywood lawyer, Bryan Freedman, has a track record of getting multimillion-dollar settlements for TV stars and other celebrities. The news that both Mr. Carlson, until recently Fox’s top-rated prime time star, and Mr. Lemon, until recently one of CNN’s morning hosts, had retained Mr. Freedman portended possible fights ahead. Mr. Freedman, who is based in Los Angeles, founded the law firm Freedman and Taitelman with Michael Taitelman in 1997.
CNN —Disgraced R&B singer and convicted sex trafficker R. Kelly has been transferred to a federal prison in North Carolina. R. Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was moved to FCI Butner Medium I, a “medium security federal correctional institution,” according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. The Butner complex sits north of the Raleigh-Durham area and includes two medium security facilities, a low-security facility and a medical facility. He was already serving a 30-year sentence on racketeering and sex trafficking charges after being convicted in New York in September 2021. “Numerous seated jurors were either familiar with accusations that Defendant had a history of sexually abusing underage girls, had previously faced legal problems, and/or had seen the highly unflattering docuseries, Surviving R. Kelly, in which several government witnesses had appeared,” a brief filed last Wednesday said.
CNN —Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly is appealing one of his two federal convictions – his September 2021 guilty verdicts on sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York – and is seeking a reversal of that conviction or a new trial, court documents show. In a brief filed Wednesday, the singer’s attorneys argue at least four seated jurors in the New York case were already familiar with the sex trafficking accusations raised against R. Kelly prior to trial, with some having seen a documentary series about him. R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a New York federal court after a jury convicted him of nine counts, including one charge of racketeering and eight counts of violations of the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law. His attorneys allege the prosecution failed to show there was a “collective of individuals who shared any common purpose other than to promote” R. Kelly’s music. The singer’s attorneys are also seeking to vacate those orders and return the funds confiscated from his trust account.
Reuters reported on March 9 (here) that the Kansas Republican legislature passed a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in female school sports if they were born male. The bill banned transgender girls and women from female sports teams in public elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges, and from private school teams that compete against public schools. Bill HB 2238 (here) restricts “participation on women’s teams to female students” and provides a basis for legal action if the act is violated. Nothing in the bill specifies how the biological sex of the students is to be determined. The Kansas bill HB 2238 does not contain any reference to genital inspections of student athletes, nor does it specify how state education groups should implement the new law restricting participation in girls’ sports teams.
CNN —The US could be approaching a 2011-style debt ceiling market meltdown, but worried investors shouldn’t abandon ship, Wall Street analysts say. That means that if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by then, the US could default on its debt. But lawmakers remain in a deadlock about whether to lift their self-imposed borrowing limit: Democrats want Congress to pass a debt ceiling increase without conditions but Republican leadership says that any debt limit increase should be accompanied by spending cuts. Wall Street’s response: A debt ceiling meltdown creates serious risk for investors. Even if the debt ceiling debates are resolved, it’s not a bad idea to have some money invested abroad just in case of upheaval.
Jurors found Chase Neill, 32, of Lawrence, guilty of a single count of threatening a U.S. government official. The judge had Neill give his testimony Thursday as a narrative from the witness stand because he was representing himself. Neill admitted in court that he left the June 5 voicemail and others with more death threats the next day. Hunting told jurors that it was reasonable for LaTurner and his staff to take Neill’s words seriously as threats. “I’m really trying to explain how I interact with God, and it’s a difficult explanation,” Neill told jurors during his testimony Thursday.
Later that month, Trump continued to goad North Korea through his tweets. But the argument about how many people could be killed had "no impact on Trump," Schmidt writes. Then, Trump "would turn back to the possibility of war, including at one point raising to Kelly the possibility of launching a preemptive military attack against North Korea," Schmidt said. Kelly warned that Trump would need congressional approval for a pre-emptive strike, which "baffled and annoyed" Trump, according to the afterword. Schmidt also writes that it was well-known among senior U.S. officials for several decades that North Korea sought to spy on U.S. decision-makers.
What is it with Elon Musk and pronouns? The implication that respecting someone’s pronouns is somehow an imposition that could potentially result in ostracizing is also wildly off base. And if you can’t even accept something as basic as someone’s pronouns and identity, you’re making it pretty clear that you do not support their civil rights and liberties. The implication that respecting someone’s pronouns is somehow an imposition that could potentially result in ostracizing is also wildly off base. At the end of the day, it costs nothing to respect someone’s pronouns.
WASHINGTON — Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s decision to leave the Democratic Party reshapes the dynamics of the 2024 Senate race in Arizona, creating fresh obstacles for Democrats to hold the seat in two years. But I’m still shockingly disappointed at how awful she continues to be,” said Michael Slugocki, an outgoing vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party. A bipartisan poll by Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research in September found that Sinema's favorable rating among Arizona Democrats was 37%. The state party censured Sinema last year after she opposed a Senate rules change to pass a major voting-rights bill. “There is every intention that the Arizona Democratic Party will run a true Democrat in 2024,” he said, adding that he favors Gallego.
When Naomi Biden, the president’s 28-year-old granddaughter, wore custom Ralph Lauren for a rare White House wedding, one weather-appropriate detail stood out: her long lace sleeves. It looked like a nod to the buttoned-up bodice on the gown Grace Kelly wore to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Despite the vanguard of current bridal designers producing more experimental silhouettes—jumpsuits, separates and nearly nude dresses—Ms. Kelly’s classic 1956 look keeps coming back. Among the brides who have emulated her style are Kate Middleton , actresses Lily Collins and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, socialite sisters Paris and Nicky Hilton, and model Jasmine Tookes, as well as legions of less-starry women who associate a high neck and covered arms with timeless glamour.

Ryan McInerney will become the next chief executive of Visa Inc. in February, the company said. Visa Inc. said on Thursday that Alfred Kelly will step aside as chief executive, effective February, and become executive chairman of its board. Ryan McInerney , the card giant’s longtime president, will become the next chief executive. During his tenure, Visa, which is the largest card network in the U.S., also further expanded its focus on other payment flows. These include helping money move over its network without the use of cards, including for transactions that involve governments and businesses.
Arizona Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly prevailed in a closely fought re-election bid against Republican challenger Blake Masters, according to the Associated Press, boosting Democrats’ prospects of maintaining their Senate majority. Mr. Kelly’s victory, which the AP called Friday night, means that Democrats need to win one of two outstanding Senate races to keep their majority, while Republicans must win both races to take control of the chamber.
Laura Kelly has won re-election to a second term, NBC News projects, defeating Republican challenger Derek Schmidt. Kelly was the only Democratic governor running for re-election in a state won by Donald Trump in 2020. Any path to victory for Kelly was always going to rely almost entirely on her ability to appeal to Republican voters. In Kansas, registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats nearly 2 to 1 (Republicans make up 44% of registered voters, Democrats 26%, and unaffiliated voters 29%). Her ads during the race focused heavily on how she had done just that during her four years in office.
The contest between Mr. Kelly and Mr. Masters could determine who controls the Senate, and the next governor of Arizona will hold significant power over the 2024 elections there. Several of our participants saw each of the two races as a choice between the lesser of two evils. More than a few participants said their dislike was rooted in a gut feeling about Mr. Masters. For the governor’s race, some participants saw Ms. Lake’s inexperience with government as a liability, while others, tired of career politicians, viewed it as an asset. Ms. Hobbs engendered fewer strong feelings, with one participant calling her “a wet noodle.”Of the 12 participants, one said he might split his vote for Mr. Kelly and Ms. Lake.
ATLANTA — Democratic strategists are agonizing about headwinds in the closing stretch of the 2022 campaign, with some fearing the election will be worse for the party than polls indicate. Now comes the moment of truth: Can they pull off one final act of levitation in the sprint to Election Day? “I definitely think that the political gravity is starting to reinforce itself,” said Sean McElwee, executive director of the Democratic-affiliated polling firm Data For Progress. “Maybe they can stretch it to 6 or 7 [points], but I think somewhere gravity kicks in.”“There’s a tightening happening,” Taylor added. The recent NBC News poll found that Democrats led Republicans by 1 point on which party voters prefer to control Congress.
WASHINGTON — The FBI on Thursday arrested a New York lawyer who is accused of trying to disarm an officer protecting the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot, law enforcement sources told NBC News. Authorities say O'Kelly tried to "disarm" a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officer on Jan. 6 by grabbing an officer's baton and "attempting to wrestle it from the officer’s hands." U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of ColumbiaO’Kelly, known to online sleuths investigating the Jan. 6 attack as “MidWhiteCrisis,” was No. A judge dismissed the lawsuit in March 2021, and an appeals court upheld the lower court ruling in August 2022. More than 870 people have been arrested by the FBI in connection with the Jan. 6 attack.
Laura Kelly, a Democrat, is fighting a tough re-election battle— the issue is almost nowhere to be seen. “What Kelly is doing makes perfect sense," said Bob Beatty, a political science professor at Washburn University in Topeka. “I think the abortion vote is possibly very instructive nationally, and for other states, but not for Kansas,” Beatty said. Doing so also allows Kelly and her campaign to avoid wading into the violent history surrounding abortion rights activism in the state. Still, at a debate between the two candidates at the Kansas State Fair earlier this month, Schmidt accused Kelly of supporting abortion “up until the moment of birth,” which is not accurate.
