(AP) — Missouri quarterback Brady Cook spent most of last season playing through a shoulder injury so severe it required offseason surgery. 15 Kansas State, some in a sea of yellow even booed their starting quarterback. “That pissed me off when we booed our starting quarterback to start the game. “That's why he's the starting quarterback,” Drinkwitz said sharply. Quit asking me about it.”Perhaps it's time to ask what Cook and the Tigers can do this season.

Cook answered with a 47-yard touchdown heave to Burden, who spent most of the game making the Kansas State secondary look silly. Will Americans toss out President Joe Biden for being too old and see Vice President Kamala Harris as a worse option? "The indictments of Donald Trump have not boosted him in the polls, either for favorability or for his support in the GOP primary. The impact of Biden's age and Vice President Kamala Harris' presence on the ticket has also been misrepresented, pollsters say. The Biden-Harris campaign is sending the vice president to speak at college campuses in the coming months. "I do think that having Vice President Harris is a net plus for the ticket," says youth voting activist Victor Shi, a Biden 2020 delegate.

The plan to restrict records has prompted an outcry from press groups, transparency advocates, Democrats and some conservatives who said it undermines the state’s 1967 law that protects the public’s access to government records. Opponents have also questioned the need for quickly pushing for the legislation in a special session. The bill would close off access to records that are at the center of a lawsuit an attorney and blogger has filed against the Arkansas State Police. David Couch, an attorney who has authored successful ballot initiatives on medical marijuana and the minimum wage, said earlier Monday he was working on a referendum effort on the FOI changes if they become law. A Senate committee on Monday endorsed the tax cut legislation, which calls for cutting the top individual and corporate income tax rates by .3%.

(AP) — An Arkansas attorney and blogger has filed a lawsuit against the Arkansas State Police that accuses the agency of illegally withholding public records he requested related to Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' travel and security. The requests included communications regarding the security for Sanders and her husband, Bryan Sanders, and records regarding their costs. Campbell also requested communications and travel records for the State Police plane, which the governor uses for travel, and records related to Sanders’ trade mission to Europe earlier this year. They include an exemption for the governor's “working papers,” and another regarding records related to governor's mansion security.

Missouri and Texas A&M were the first teams to join the SEC in 20 years. Financial benefits and concerns about conference stability lured Boston College to become the A.C.C.’s 12th member in 2005. Penn State, one of the last major programs to remain independent, became the Big Ten’s 11th member in 1993, setting off a wave of realignment across college football. The Missouri Valley Conference stopped sponsoring football after the 1985 season. Arkansas departed for the SEC in 1991, signaling the beginning of the end for the Southwest Conference, long associated with N.C.A.A.

Lauren Savoie, 34, an editor at Insider, moved from Boston to Kansas, with her husband, 36. After trying a rural life, Savoie has decided she is a "city kid," and plans to move to New York City next year. So, a little over a year ago, we moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where the university is. The Salina Regional airport, left, is an hour away from Manhattan, Kansas. Healthcare, even in the case of an emergency, was much harder to find in Manhattan, Kansas than it was in Boston.

Romulo Lollato, a wheat agronomist for Kansas State University, examines wheat in a field on an annual crop tour, near Washington, Kansas, U.S., May 16, 2023. The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts 2023 corn yield in Illinois will be similar to that of 2021. USDA pegs Iowa’s corn yield just below 2021’s record, which also came amid dry conditions with well-timed showers. The tour uses a rough corn yield calculation, though it does not estimate soybean yield. Final soybean yield across the whole of Nebraska last year was the lowest since 2012 and 18% below the 2019-2021 average.

Vrbin’s report notes that Kellams isn’t against teenagers working, and that as a teenager she herself worked at a local chicken plant that has a history of violating child labor laws. Some of these laws, like Iowa’s, which allows 14- and 15-year-olds to work up to six hours a day during the school year, conflict with federal labor law. According to Nina Mast, a state economic analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, the ultimate goal of the proponents of these state laws is to weaken federal child labor law. Though there were attempts to weaken child labor law after that, he says, they weren’t really mainstream for decades. In his book, Fliter notes that as a presidential candidate in 2012, the former House speaker Newt Gingrich “proposed a plan to allow poor children to work as janitors in schools” and called child labor laws “truly stupid.” Since then, political attacks on child labor laws have increased.

More intense summer heat resulting from emissions-driven climate change means animal heat stress that can result in billions of dollars in lost revenue for farmers and ranchers if not properly managed. But technology often insulates livestock in richer countries — another way global warming exacerbates the gap between wealthy and poor nations. Their cows are already showing signs of improved welfare, like chewing more cud, and there's more heat ahead this summer. "We're going to do what's best by our cows no matter what is or isn't going on with climate change," said Megan McAllister, a sixth-generation dairy farmer. As part of his work with Kansas State, Redmond gives presentations to producers and the general public, and he said that climate change has come up in conversations.

Someone sent Republican lawmakers in Montana letters containing an unknown white powder. Republican officials in Tennessee and Kansas also received similar letters over the last week. Several Tennessee Republicans got similar letters the day before, according to the Tennessee Star. Gifford said she thinks it's time to go back to college so she can pursue a job in social work. I grew up in a small town in Arkansas called Quitman, and I went to Arkansas State University right out of high school. In the almost 10 years I've worked here I've never worried about layoffs, but I'm weighing other options now. When he's finished, the plan is for me to return to school for a degree in social work. My advice to someone entering their 20s would be to stay out of debt, don't get credit cards, don't get a new car, and work while you have no children and lots of energy.

Last month, Huggins was disciplined after he used a homophobic slur twice and mocked Catholics on a local Cincinnati radio program. Huggins, who coached at the University of Cincinnati from 1989 to 2005, was charged with drunken driving in Ohio in 2004 and pleaded no contest. In 38 seasons as the head coach at Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State and West Virginia, he led his teams to 26 N.C.A.A. But a national title has eluded Huggins, who has the most wins of any coach to never cut down the championship nets. “Coach Huggins devoted himself to his players, to our student body, to our fans and alumni and to all West Virginians,” the statement read.

REUTERS/Tom PolansekWICHITA, Kansas, May 22 (Reuters) - Farmers in Kansas, the biggest U.S. producer of wheat used to make bread, are abandoning their crops after a severe drought and damaging cold ravaged farms. Kansas farmers are expected to abandon about 19% of the acres planted last autumn, up from 10% last year and 4% in 2021, according to the report. Soaring prices for hay also pressure wheat farmers not to harvest their fields for grain so they can be fed to cattle, Gilpin said. Kansas farmers are expected to produce just 191.4 million bushels of wheat this year, the smallest since 1963, according to the latest monthly government forecast.
Sometimes there’s not enough rain when seedlings need water, or too much when the plants need to keep their heads above water. Rice farmers are shifting their planting calendars. On top of that, there’s climate change: It has upended the rhythm of sunshine and rain that rice depends on. That’s a fraction of the emissions from coal, oil and gas, which together account for 35 percent of methane emissions. His experiment, carried out over seven years, concluded that by not flooding the fields continuously, farmers can reduce rice methane emissions by more than 60 percent.
Nearly two years after student-athletes gained the right to make money from their names, images, and likenesses, typically referred to as NIL, the tech platform Opendorse said it's processed over 100,000 NIL deals across the US. Snapchat and TikTok were much less common, representing just 6% and 3% of activations of NIL deals, respectively, per Opendorse's report. The average brand deal paid to athletes in the sport was $3,837, followed by $2,472 for football players and $1,693 for men's swimming and diving athletes. Women's college basketball players were the fourth highest earners on average for brand deals, with an average of $1,418 per deal. Haley and Hanna Cavinder earned nearly $2 million in NIL deals in the first year of the program, for example, per Forbes.

Reuters reported on March 9 (here) that the Kansas Republican legislature passed a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in female school sports if they were born male. The bill banned transgender girls and women from female sports teams in public elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges, and from private school teams that compete against public schools. Bill HB 2238 (here) restricts “participation on women’s teams to female students” and provides a basis for legal action if the act is violated. Nothing in the bill specifies how the biological sex of the students is to be determined. The Kansas bill HB 2238 does not contain any reference to genital inspections of student athletes, nor does it specify how state education groups should implement the new law restricting participation in girls’ sports teams.

LONDON, April 6 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Amanda Cooper. The prospect of a sustained string of interest rate rises last year led to an epic sell-off in bonds and battered sectors of the stock market, such as tech. As 2023 dawned, data showed the economy was holding up, the consumer was resilient, and, just as importantly, so were corporate profits. But this week's data releases have served as a reminder that policy transmission - the effect of changes in interest rates on the real world - is alive and well. Twelve months and nearly 500 basis points of rate rises will eventually take their toll.
Nearly two years into NIL, its impact on college sports is starting to show during March Madness. Most of the teams the Final Four — in both men's and women's basketball — have strong NIL backings. Changes to NIL and the transfer portal have created a "perfect storm that's allowed some schools to bank talent," one expert said. LSU's Angel Reese has the most NIL deals of any college baller, Just Women's Sports reported based on data from SponsorUnited, which tracks NIL deals. "The transfer portal and NIL happening at same time, to me, that's the perfect storm that's allowed some schools to bank talent," Dosh said.
