The Israel-Lebanon border has seen constant, but so far limited, clashes since a war in Gaza erupted two weeks ago. Persistent violence along the Israel-Lebanon border has raised fears that fighting between Israel and Hamas Islamists in Gaza could spiral into a broader, regional conflict. Evacuees from Kiryat Shmona will be put up in state-subsidised guesthouses, Israel's Defense Ministry said, joining tens of thousands of Israelis who have already left their homes near the southern Gaza border. The Committee to Protect Journalists has said it has documented more than 20 journalists killed since the start of the Israel-Gaza conflict and said it was investigating reports of other journalists killed, injured and reported missing. The latest incident on the Israel-Lebanon border came nearly a week after Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was killed in southern Lebanon.

The evacuation order, which was approved by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, comes amid fears that the Israel-Hamas war could spill over into a regional conflict. Shelling has intensified in recent days between northern Israel and southern Lebanon, a stronghold of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. U.S. President Joe Biden said he would send Congress an "urgent budget request" on Friday, seeking to provide funding for critically important international allies, including Israel and Ukraine. The request comes as the Israel-Hamas war enters its 14th day, with many fearful that an expected ground assault on the Gaza Strip could worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Israel on Friday announced the evacuation of Kiryat Shmona, a city of some 22,000 people close to the Lebanese border. On Thursday, three residents of Kiryat Shmona were injured when a barrage of rockets were launched toward Israeli military sites and towns from the Lebanese side of the border. The Israeli military launched airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon in retaliation. The rocket attacks on Kiryat Shmona were the first big hit on a major urban center in the north since the war began. Israeli tanks were deployed in the far northern border town of Metulla as rain came down near the heavily fortified border. Six people were killed on Monday - three Hezbollah members, an Israeli officer, and two Palestinian militants who touched off the violence by infiltrating Israel from Lebanon. A storm put many people in Lebanon on edge as thunder was mistaken for Israeli bombardment. Lebanon took years to rebuild from the 2006 war, during which Israeli bombardment pounded Hezbollah-controlled south Lebanon and destroyed wide areas of its stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Lebanon can ill-afford another big war with Israel, four years into a financial meltdown that has spread impoverishment and paralysed state institutions.

Several Israeli and Jewish schools are reportedly urging parents to delete social media apps like Instagram, TikTok and X, formerly known as Twitter, from their children's smartphones to prevent them from seeing violent images and videos related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. One Tel Aviv school's parents' association warned of the possibility that Hamas fighters may release graphic videos of hostages "begging for their lives," CNN reported on Tuesday. Several Jewish schools in the U.S. have also issued similar warnings, reported the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, which added that "It was not clear where the information about forthcoming hostage videos was coming from." The principal of The Frisch School in Paramus, New Jersey, reportedly sent an email to parents urging them to tell their kids to delete Instagram and TikTok "immediately." "Please remove the @TikTok and @instagram apps from your children's mobile phones," the message said.
