Should CEOs Comment on Politically Contentious Topics?
  + stars: | 2023-09-30 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
When CEOs speak out on political and social topics of the day, it can provoke a backlash from both investors and employees. Photo: justin lane/EPA/ShutterstockThe polarization that plagues the U.S.—on seemingly every important and not-so-important issue—poses a challenge for corporate leaders. Many feel pressure to take a stand on the topics that their employees, customers and investors are passionate about, or feel that it’s simply the right thing to do. But speaking out can provoke a backlash that can hurt a company’s business and fuel discord.

How Much Savings Do Americans Have Left, Anyway?
  + stars: | 2023-09-26 | by ( Justin Lahart | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Inflation is rising and investors are betting that interest rates will go higher. This week’s readings on the housing market, consumer confidence and leading economic indicators offer clarity on how the market is holding up. Photo: Mike Blake/ReutersEverybody knows that U.S. households’ savings soared after the pandemic struck, as the combined effects of checks from the government and fewer opportunities to spend swelled wallets. And everybody knows that as the checks stopped coming, the economy reopened and inflation began to bite, those savings got whittled away.

The Americans now have gone 30 years without winning the Ryder Cup away from home, a losing streak the entire team knows all too well. “The obvious bullet points don't need to be mentioned, and that's one of them.”The context of this losing streak can be presented in so many ways. Phil Mickelson was there for all six losses during the losing streak. "It's like chalk and cheese the way a U.S. Ryder Cup golf course is set up compared with a European course. “Europe obviously has an amazing identity with the Ryder Cup,” Fleetwood said.

The firm upgraded the stock to outperform from "peer perform," noting it has an "attractive" risk-reward ratio. Analyst Justin Lake raised his price target to $80, implying 16.4% upside from Monday's close of $68.75, which was the firm's previous price target. The analyst said he sees potential for CVS to more conservatively set expectations for earnings growth in 2025 and beyond in the high single-digit range. The stock has gained 5.5% so far this month, however, and rose 4.4% during Monday's trading session. Combined, Lake said these efforts should effectively allow CVS to "reinvest for future growth."
