The Daily Beast’s new leaders will do a round of voluntary buyouts intended to cut costs by $1.5 million, in one of their first major moves to try to revitalize the flagging digital tabloid. The new leaders, Joanna Coles and Ben Sherwood, both media veterans, joined the company in April in exchange for an equity stake in the business. Barry Diller’s company, IAC, maintains control of the publication. The Daily Beast’s union told its members in a memo this week that workers would have until June 14 to apply for a buyout, after which the publication would accept applications “in reverse seniority order until they meet their $1.5 million threshold.”Decisions on additional applications beyond that threshold would be up to the company, and there would be “a moratorium” on further layoffs until the end of the year, according to the union’s memo. The cuts are not targeting any particular coverage area.

To the Editor:Re “A Home Buying Prohibition Rattles Chinese Nationals in Florida” (news article, May 7):The excellent reporting by Amy Qin and Patricia Mazzei shows why State Representative David Borrero, a Miami-area Republican, is wrong in claiming that national security interests take precedence over discrimination claims. Time and again, we see how this false dichotomy is used to justify civil rights violations against Asian Americans. This was the case in major touch points throughout our history, from the Japanese American incarceration during World War II to the Justice Department’s now defunct China Initiative, which led to the increased faulty targeting, profiling and prosecution of Asian American and immigrant researchers, scientists, and professors — particularly those of Chinese descent. The bigoted thinking espoused by Representative Borrero and others who support these initiatives should not go unchecked. JetBlue Airways shares tumbled more than 10% in premarket trading Tuesday after the airline lowered its 2024 revenue forecast, a setback as it tries to return to profitability. The carrier said second-quarter revenue would likely drop as much as 10.5% on the year, more than double the decline analysts polled by LSEG expected. JetBlue has been on a cost-cutting spree, culling unprofitable routes, and focusing on those with steady demand and high sales for premium seats. JetBlue earlier this year said it would defer $2.5 billion in aircraft spending until the end of the year. Revenue dropped 5.1% from last year to $2.21 billion, matching LSEG revenue expectations.

The Daily Beast has long been an outlier in the digital empire of the billionaire Barry Diller. As sites like Match.com and Expedia made millions over the years, Mr. Diller’s digital tabloid lost money, publishing scoop after scoop but struggling to turn a profit. Mr. Sherwood and Ms. Coles will be granted an equity stake equivalent to roughly half of The Daily Beast, with IAC keeping the majority, according to a person familiar with the matter. Mr. Sherwood, 60, will be its chief executive and publisher, and Ms. Coles, 61, will be chief creative and content officer. The decision to bring in Mr. Sherwood and Ms. Coles came after Mr. Diller considered a sale of The Daily Beast and had conversations with various suitors.

But also a true thing: In 1994, when Simpson fled police in his white Bronco, 95 million people watched the slow-motion chase on TV, in real time. New ETF looks to profit from municipal bonds
  + stars: | 2024-04-06 | by ( Emily Glass | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A new ETF is trying to capture profits in the municipal funds space. BondBloxx's Joanna Gallegos is behind the IR+M Tax-Aware Short Duration ETF (TAXX) — which launched less than a month ago. "When you think about municipal bond portfolios, you really want people to think beyond them and look for the relative value of after-tax income," the firm's co-founder and COO told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Gallegos sees actively managed municipal bond exchange-traded funds as an income-generating opportunity in a high rate environment. FactSet describes the fund as "tax efficient" — balancing strong after-tax income opportunities with capital preserved through both municipal and taxable short-duration fixed income securities.

"Your biggest mistake could be rushing back into equities before you're considering all these opportunities in fixed income," BondBloxx co-founder and COO Joanna Gallegos told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. To manage interest rate volatility effectively, Gallegos suggests investors look to exchange-traded funds focused on intermediate term bonds. Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Tony Rochte recommends a similar medium-term strategy with vehicles like the Eaton Vance Total Return Bond ETF (EVTR) under his firm's management. Rochte also pointed to municipal bond funds, like the Eaton Vance Short Duration Municipal Income ETF (EVSM), for income-generating opportunities. "We also converted a municipal bond mutual fund last Monday here at the NYSE to an ETF, symbol EVSM, and that's a municipal.

What the Bridge Meant to Baltimore

Blue-collar workers crossed it. And couples were known to get engaged near it. Completed in 1977, the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a practical, final link to the beltway of roads that circled Baltimore Harbor, a much-needed solution to reduce Harbor Tunnel congestion. For some, it symbolized the working-class communities around it — for others, the city itself. And the Key Bridge was simply a presence in people’s everyday lives.
