In the week ahead, investors from all camps will focus on a series of labor market reports for clues on where the U.S. economy and stock market may go from here. The closely watched reading, known as JOLTS, measures the tightness or slack in the labor market. The U.S. stock market also is closed Thursday. The fresh batch of labor market data will help shape investors' thinking about the course of Federal Reserve policy this year. The more hawkish stance spooked the stock market, and the S & P 500 remains nearly 2% below its Dec. 17 close, the day before the Fed's disclosure.

BI Today: Understanding retirees' regrets
  + stars: | 2025-01-05 | by ( Jamie Heller | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +6 min
I joined BI in September from The Wall Street Journal, where I was an editor for more than twenty years. The reporter on that first story, Noah Sheidlower, teamed with colleague Allie Kelly to mine these reader surveys to write more stories on people's retirement regrets — common career regrets, parenting regrets, regrets navigating a medical diagnosis or a spouse's death. ADUltimately, we heard from more than 4,000 BI readers. Along the way, our econ squad reached out to our crackerjack video team to pitch a video. This week's quote:"You've got to give the people with whom you're contending your understanding — not your agreement but your understanding."

Those chapters shone throughout the opening stanza of a six-day state funeral intended to blend personalized memorials with the ceremonial pomp afforded to former presidents. The procession stopped at the farm where the future president toiled alongside the Black sharecroppers who worked for his father. The motorcade continued to Atlanta, stopping in front of the Georgia Capitol where Carter served as a state senator and reformist governor. Indeed, Carter helped plan his own funeral to emphasize that his remarkable rise to the world stage was because of — not despite — his deep rural roots. In a few days, Jimmy Carter will be celebrated in a towering cathedral in Washington by fellow American presidents, noted humanitarians and other world leaders. But before all of that, a hearse carrying the remains of Mr. Carter, the nation’s 39th president, paused on Saturday outside a farmhouse in Georgia. It was the first stop in a valedictory trek tracing the scope of a lengthy and varied life. The trek, like his life, began and will end in a patch of rural Georgia, where he was born and raised and where he died on Dec. 29 at 100. In the days ahead, the series of memorial events will incorporate a discussion of the impression that Mr. Carter made on the world, including the legacy he left after a single term in the White House and a post-presidential life that also came to define him.

The official state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will be held Thursday in Washington, DC, but the public will have a chance to say goodbye in the days leading up to it. After that, the motorcade heads to the Georgia State Capitol and then to the Carter Center in Atlanta, where the former president will lie in repose through Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, Carter will be taken to Washington, where he will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda before his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral. The Capitol will be open to the public so that people can pay their respects before the funeral. Carter will then be laid to rest in Plains at the same location where his wife, Rosalynn, was buried last year.

His record largely reflects this effort – but the Iran hostage crisis has tended to obscure that Carter was otherwise a successful commander-in-chief on the foreign policy front. Within weeks of taking office, Carter wrote a letter of support to Andrei Sakharov, the leading Soviet dissident. Carter’s approach to American foreign policy based on rights and justice also informed his decision to return the Panama Canal to the Panamanians. In recent weeks, President-elect Donald Trump has publicly mused about getting the Panama Canal back, but since the US Senate has ratified the Panama Canal treaties and the Panamanian government has said it has no interest in handing the canal back to the US, the possibility of this happening seems quite remote. That said, Carter’s legacy as commander-in-chief cannot be judged solely by the US hostages held in Iran and the failed rescue effort.

Thousands of miles from Washington, where the funeral of Jimmy Carter is set for next week, an Indian village named after the former U.S. president fondly remembers his visit almost 50 years ago, paying tribute. A one-term president from 1977, Carter, who died on Sunday at age 100, is to be given a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. Carterpuri, or the “Village of Carter,” is a dusty hamlet about 20 miles outside Delhi. So taken were the residents by the Carters’ visit that they changed the name of their village in his honor.

WASHINGTON — Republicans on Friday will begin laying the groundwork for a second Trump administration as they officially take over the majority in both chambers of Congress and try to elect a speaker of the House before they tackle other critical business. Because of the GOP’s minuscule 219-215-seat majority, just two Republican defections could derail Johnson’s bid to remain speaker. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., pleaded with his colleagues to elect Johnson quickly and avoid a drawn-out fight, lest it fuel Republican divisions that hinder their agenda. I hope not,” Barr said when he was asked whether it will again take multiple ballots to elect a speaker. Congress is scheduled to certify Trump's presidential election victory on Monday, Jan. 6, the fourth anniversary of the deadly attack, in a heavily fortified Capitol complex.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday walked investors through next week's market action, highlighting new economic data from the nonfarm payroll report and the latest purchasing managers' index, as well as earnings from grocery giant Albertsons . "It's a light week, but still impactful, accept that people will be on edge ahead of Friday's employment report," he said. Tuesday brings a job openings report, known as the JOLTS, and Cramer said it could provide clues about Friday's labor report. On Friday, the Labor Department will release the nonfarm payroll report, and Cramer said it needs to show lower wage growth and disappointing hiring, as that could help bring down the 10-year Treasury yield . But Cramer said he's still optimistic on the stock, saying that the company is growing and beer could be exempt from tariff hikes.

Investors will head into a shortened trading week with a cloudy January outlook and a looming jobs report. Next week will also wrap the next first five trading days of January — an early measure for how stocks could do this month. December jobs report Next week will also bring the December jobs report, one of the last key pieces of data before the Federal Reserve's meeting at the end of this month. An in-line report, or one that comes in softer than expected, could relieve investors who are seeking some cooling in an otherwise resilient labor market. However, if the report comes in hotter than expected, it could disappoint investors, driving stocks to the downside.

President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, his predecessor and successor, have never been friendly. Trump has long insulted “Sleepy Joe” Biden and claims he ordered his multiple indictments, despite a lack of evidence. The Summary Former President Jimmy Carter worked for decades to eliminate Guinea worm disease around the world. Former President Jimmy Carter hoped to outlive the Guinea worm — and he came achingly close to achieving that goal. “A lot of good progress is being shown.”In 1986, the World Health Assembly called for eradication of Guinea worm disease. Guinea worm disease could become the second, though it may take years and new methods to push the effort across the finish line. Guinea worm disease was first detected in dogs in 2012, forcing a shift in strategy.

Carter and Trump could hardly have been more different and, despite the president-elect’s gracious tribute on Sunday, swapped fierce public criticism. Trump, meanwhile, often mocked Carter on the campaign trail this year – lampooning him as the worst president in history bar one, President Joe Biden. While Carter tried to reintroduce humility to the presidency, Trump sees the office as furnishing almost unchecked power. Not every former US president has built one — only 15 have done so since Congress established the practice with the Presidential Libraries Act in 1955. Editor’s Note: A version of this story published last year after President Carter entered hospice care. But there was another source of inspiration for Carter that’s been overlooked: his distinctive brand of White evangelical Christianity, which remains hidden from most Americans. Carter was a progressive White evangelical Christian. Progressive White evangelicalism was once what one historian called “the ascendent strain of evangelicalism in America.”Today White evangelical Christians are associated, rightly or wrongly, with a conservative set of theological and political stances. Madeline Drexler/APUnlike former President Bill Clinton, another progressive White evangelical, Carter refused to “triangulate,” or adjust his beliefs to win favor with evangelicals.

As the nation mourns the loss of Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at age 100, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders look back on the historic contribution the then-president made to the community. Following a push from several Asian American lawmakers, Carter, the country’s 39th president, signed a proclamation that designated May 4, 1979, as the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. Decades later, the week would be extended, becoming the heritage month now celebrated annually. Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga, both Democrats of Hawaii and fellow Asian Americans, followed suit, introducing sister legislation in the Senate. Mielke underscored that the national recognition from Carter wouldn’t have been possible without decades of work from Asian American and Pacific Islander advocates and legislators themselves, who had long championed the racial group.

Marchers in San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day parade carry a banner with a quote from Jimmy Carter on June 26, 1977. “They did not want a photo op with the president and these leaders,” Kirchick said, referring to the Carter administration. Bronski and other historians say that while Carter’s efforts to move the needle on gay rights may seem “small” by today’s standards, he planted the seeds for future presidents. ‘Jesus never said a word about homosexuality’Long after leaving the White House, Carter continued to vocally support gay Americans.
