SINGAPORE — A Singapore court on Thursday sentenced a former minister to 12 months in prison for obstructing justice and receiving more than $300,000 worth of gifts, in the first jailing of a former cabinet member in a city-state famous for its clean governance. In a statement posted on the prime minister’s office website, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said he was disappointed and saddened by the case. The case has shocked Singapore, which prides itself on its well-paid and efficient bureaucracy as well as strong and squeaky-clean governance. According to the prosecution, the value of the gifts Iswaran received totaled more than 400,000 Singapore dollars ($308,500). The former minister faced a total of 35 charges, two of which were corruption-related but were later amended to charges of receiving gifts while a public servant.

The C919 is China’s first homegrown mainline passenger plane, manufactured by the Shanghai-based state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). Steven Jiang/CNNI was happy to hear the flight attendant highlight the aircraft type in his pre-takeoff briefing. “Today you’re flying with Air China C919 aircraft, which is the first large airliner independently developed by China,” he said, as the jet taxied to the runway. Air China serves hot meals in economy during meal hours even for short-haul flights (today’s flying time: 1 hour 40 minutes). As far as my passenger expectation goes, this C919 flight has earned a solid B in terms of safety and comfort.

Ukraine's F-16 pilots have had to get up to speed on a different fighter jet quickly. And more broadly, Ukraine's air force is having to rapidly undergo a wider transition that its international partners took significantly longer to do. Those older jets have hydraulic systems, while F-16 jets are fly-by-wire, which means computers process the input by pilots. Then union members will get additional $4-per-hour raises every year during the life of the six-year tentative deal. The union had been willing to consider the $4-an-hour deal before the strike, union boss Harold Daggett said on the picket line outside the Port of New York and New Jersey early Tuesday, soon after the start of the strike. Thursday’s deal likely is the end of the strike, but it doesn’t close the door on a new strike in the future. Should the members vote against the deal, the strike might start once again. But union members voted nearly unanimously to reject it and have remained on strike since September 13.

"Iran uses ballistic missiles as a replacement for aircraft," a regional expert said. Iran used more ballistic missiles than the 120 it launched during its April barrage, its first direct attack on Israel. Iran has also shown a preference for firing ballistic missiles against less-defended targets closer to home. Since 2017, Iran has also used its ballistic missiles against ISIS in Syria, following terrorist attacks in Iran and, on one occasion, alleged militant targets in Pakistan. In January 2024, Tehran even used ballistic missiles to destroy a businessman's residence in neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan.

The United States regularly carries out aerial intercepts of Russian aircraft in international airspace near Alaska, and usually says they are carried out in a safe and professional manner. But this time was different, officials say. North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD, said on Sept. 23 that it detected and tracked four Russian military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone. At the time, it said the Russian activity “occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”An air defense identification zone is international airspace just beyond a country’s sovereign territory that approaching aircraft to identify themselves.
