When they bought their organic vegetable farm in South Royalton, Vt., slung along the fertile floodplain of the White River, Ashley Loehr and Antoine Guerlain took comfort in the dense buffer of shrubs and trees that lay between their fields and the gently swirling water. It was 2021, a decade after the remnants of Hurricane Irene drove the river far over its banks, swamping the farm and wide swaths of the state. Determined to prevent another such disaster, the prior owner had proactively planted the trees, imagining a rising wall of woods that would at least make future flooding less grievous. There was no way to know if the barrier, 35 feet wide, would be enough — until last July, when another devastating storm surged across Vermont. The river gathered force and busted through, again overtaking fields and destroying crops.

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said this week that her father had been “uncaring” and behaved in a “cruel” manner toward her as a child over her being queer and feminine. In an exclusive interview with NBC News on Thursday, Ms. Wilson, 20, called Mr. Musk “cold,” “very quick to anger” and “narcissistic.” She described him as an absent father who, according to NBC, would “harass her for exhibiting feminine traits and pressure her to appear more masculine, including by pushing her to deepen her voice as early as elementary school.”Ms. Wilson’s interview came in response to remarks Mr. Musk made earlier this week about her transgender identity. In an interview on Monday with the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson that was streamed live on X, Mr. Musk used Ms. Wilson’s birth name, which is known as deadnaming, and said that she was “dead, killed by the woke mind virus.” Mr. Musk also said that he had been “tricked” into authorizing gender-affirming care for her. He later doubled down on his claims about Ms. Wilson on X, saying that she was “born gay and slightly autistic” but that she “was not a girl.”

Musk has previously spoken about his daughter, including in the authorized biography written by journalist Walter Isaacson and published last year. Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first public interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine. Wilson, 20, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, responded to comments that Musk made Monday about her and her transgender identity. She told NBC News that at the time, she was surprised by the media attention to the court filing, which she submitted when she was 18. Wilson told NBC News that those anecdotes are not true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child. How New Hampshire Could Be Slipping From the Democrats

The Biden campaign is opening more field offices. Gavin Newsom has paid a visit, all the way from California, to proclaim the president’s fitness for a second term. And a recent poll has shown President Biden losing support. New Hampshire’s famously independent-minded voters have reliably favored Democrats in presidential races for two decades. But after Mr. Biden’s recent dismal debate performance, one poll of registered voters in the state found that former President Donald J. Trump had a slight lead.

In Plainfield, Vt., a town of 1,350, some residents spent the past year cleaning up their homes after catastrophic floods swept through last July. On Thursday, many found themselves right back where they had started after flooding once again hit Plainfield and other parts of central Vermont, on the anniversary of the disaster that they had just started putting behind them. “It’s something very difficult to witness — people who have spent a year cleaning their place up, and now it’s covered in four feet of mud,” said Bram Towbin, the town clerk and treasurer in Plainfield. “We’re very resilient people, but these are not people of means. This is something we’ll be living with for many years.”The flooding battered roads and bridges in the state and forced more than 100 rescues and evacuations overnight.

'Stay away from shorts'There has been a shift in recent years away from strict dress codes, Swann says. On the New York Stock Exchange trading floor, for example, jeans, shorts and other casual wear are still prohibited for personnel and guests. At every job I've had, though, (mainly in media and always based in New York), the dress codes have been way looser. My high school has even adopted a more casual dress code — abandoning the daily tie requirement and allowing sneakers — in recent years. Even if the shorts are dressier or have longer inseams, Swann says they may be perceived as unprofessional in many work environments.

A judge in Massachusetts declared a mistrial on Monday in the high-profile murder case against Karen Read, the suburban woman who was accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, after a night out drinking. The jurors began deliberating early last week, and twice signaled to the court that they were having trouble reaching a unanimous verdict. In a note to Judge Beverly J. Cannone of Norfolk Superior Court on Monday morning, they wrote that they had “fundamental differences in our opinions,” and that “consensus is unattainable.”The judge then read them last-ditch instructions about the importance of reaching a verdict. But hours later, the 12 jurors declared themselves deadlocked, and Judge Cannone declared a mistrial. Prosecutors said in a statement that they intended to try the case again.
