The truth is we are going to wreck the billionaire economy," said UAW President Shawn Fain. UAW vice president Chuck Browning, who is leading talks with Ford, told a rally of hundreds of UAW workers in downtown Detroit on Friday afternoon that recent talks have made "good progress, but we have far to go." Striking workers said "tier two" employees can make only half the hourly wages of senior UAW workers and get worse benefits. GM said on Thursday the UAW wage and benefits proposals would cost the automaker $100 billion, but did not elaborate. Biden's likely opponent, former president Donald Trump, on Friday criticized the shift to EVs as a job-killer for the UAW.

The UAW began striking at factories that make only a few vehicles – Ford Broncos and Rangers, Jeep Wranglers, Chevrolet mid-size pickups and GMC vans. Car prices were rising long before the auto workers even raised the possibility of a strike. Prices are almost certain to rise even if the strike is settled quickly, because the auto makers' labor costs will increase. “They could double our wages and not raise car prices and still make billions of dollars in profit,” he said during an online presentation to union members this week. It's all enough to make many motorists consider avoiding the car lot and keeping their current car a while longer.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden said Friday that workers should be fairly compensated as auto companies make record profits, after the United Auto Workers union began a strike against General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis. "But I believe they should go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW." "Auto companies have seen record profits including the last few years because of the extraordinary skill and sacrifices of the UAW workers," Biden said. "Those record profits have not been shared fairly, in my view, with the workers." "We agree with Joe Biden when he says 'record profits mean record contracts,'" Fain said.

The United Auto Workers labor union launched targeted strikes against the three Detroit automakers early Friday morning. It's the first time in history that the UAW has struck all three of the Detroit automakers at once. GM's Cadillac and Chevrolet brands had just 46 days' and 51 days' worth of vehicles, respectively; the Ford brand had 77 days' worth. Historically, the Detroit automakers have tended to have somewhat larger supplies on hand because their full-size pickups are offered in many different configurations. In contrast to the strike against Stellantis, the UAW's strike against Ford could be relatively brief.

Sept 15 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union launched simultaneous strikes at three factories owned by General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) on Friday, kicking off the most ambitious U.S. industrial labor action in decades. "I’m looking forward to joining our auto workers on the picket line this weekend. For the sake of Michigan’s economy and our working families, I hope this strike is short-lived. "American families are already feeling economic pressures from near-record-high inflation, and this will only inflict more pain. We urge a swift resolution to end this strike and avoid further undermining the strength of our industry and harming our broader economy."

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDETROIT, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union launched simultaneous strikes at three Detroit Three factories early on Friday, kicking off the most ambitious U.S. industrial labor action in decades. Fain's decision to go with targeted walkouts could limit the cost to the union of strike pay. UAW President Fain has taken an unorthodox approach to the negotiations, bargaining with all three Detroit automakers simultaneously. But the Detroit automakers build some of the U.S. market's best-selling vehicles, such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs.

But not all of the 146,000 UAW members at company plants are walking picket lines, at least not yet. Top-scale assembly plant workers make about $32 per hour, plus large annual profit-sharing checks. The Ford plant that's on strike employs about 3,300 workers, and it makes Bronco SUVs and Ranger midsize pickup trucks. Under the UAW strategy, workers who go on strike would live on $500 per week in strike pay from the union, while others would stay on the job at full pay. It’s unlikely the companies would lock the remaining workers out of their factories because they want to keep building vehicles.

"We think potential disruption from industrial action is likely to create buying opportunities in the D3 shares," the analyst said in a Friday note. "D3," or "the Detroit Three," refers to General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. It also marked the first time in history that the UAW launched strikes at all three of the big automakers simultaneously. Ford shares were flat. "Moving forward, we expect all three stocks to be sensitive to UAW newsflow especially as it relates to the potential duration of industrial action," Jonas said.

"The autoworkers will not have any jobs, Kristen, because all of these cars are going to be made in China. The electric cars, automatically, are going to be made in China," Trump told NBC News' Kristen Welker in an exclusive, wide-ranging interview set to air Sunday on "Meet the Press." "Hybrid is a great alternative to a pure electric vehicle (and) it's an easier sell to a lot of customers." Interest in hybrids is rebounding as consumer demand for pure electrics has not accelerated as quickly as expected. Sales of pure electrics will claim about 37%, leaving combustion vehicles — including so-called “mild” hybrids — with a nearly 40% share. In addition to new pure electric models coming soon, "we are very bullish on hybrids going forward," a spokesperson said. Hyundai and sister brand Kia offer seven hybrid models, with Ford and Lincoln six.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said the truck will be built in the U.S. and the location would be announced soon. He told reporters on the sidelines of the auto show that consumers will choose the Ram over other EV trucks because it will exceed other trucks' performance on range, speed of charge, towing and other factors. CNN —Ford has announced another SUV recall, this time impacting about 520,000 Ford Escape and Bronco Sport compacts in the United States. Some of these same SUVs were involved in an earlier recall that also involved a possibility of fire. Under the new recall, Ford dealers will install a software update that will detect a possibly cracked injector. The Ford Bronco Sport shares much of its engineering with the Ford Escape. It is unrelated to the larger Ford Bronco, a more truck-like SUV that is a competitor to the Jeep Wrangler.
