I’ve been on Twitter (now X) since June 2008, meaning that I’ve spent 16 years on the platform. And while many of the most “online” candidates lose in real-life elections (Blake Masters in the 2022 Arizona Senate race, for one), why they garner so much support in the first place is worth contemplating. What is it about the purity spiral of the online right — partisans playing to the most intense parts of the online base, continually trying to prove their conservative bona fides — that thrives despite real-world losses? Mary Katharine Ham is a commentator for Fox News who has been very online and immersed in social media politics just as long as I have. So I spoke with her about the online right — its real-world wins and losses and what the point of being an online conservative influencer is in the first place, especially for women.

Washington CNN —US women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan will not be on the team’s roster for the Olympic Games next month in Paris, a symbol of the changing of the guard going on inside the women’s national team. The 22-player roster, which includes 18 players going to Paris and four alternates, includes only eight players from the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 in Tokyo, and 10 members of the 2023 World Cup team. She acknowledged the roster for Paris will have less experienced players than previous tournaments with an eye toward development. “I’m not looking backwards, we have to look forward with a group of players that have put that World Cup behind them. In 2016, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, received more votes than any of the party’s other candidates in history and the most of any third-party candidate since Ross Perot — and arguably, the Libertarian Party has never recovered. Much like the conservative movement, the libertarian movement has been divided between more “normie” libertarians who have embraced criminal justice reform and social freedoms (like immigration and the rights of L.G.B.T.Q. And in 2024, the Libertarian Party Convention featured appearances from people like former President Donald Trump. But in a major surprise, the winner of the party’s presidential nominating process was not the Mises Caucus’s favorite but Chase Oliver, a 38-year-old, gay antiwar activist who had left the Democratic Party. I spoke with Mr. Oliver about what libertarianism means to him today, how he plans to fight for independent votes this year and why the Libertarian Party failed 2020’s “libertarian moment.”

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “nearly a quarter of men reported some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime. “There is a hidden epidemic of sexual violence within the queer community that is rarely visible in the media. A man some viewers mistakenly identified as the older television writer in “Baby Reindeer” has gone to the police after receiving threatening messages on social media. Whatever the legacy of “Baby Reindeer” may be, it stands as one of the boldest and most forthright explorations of male victims of stalking and sexual assault.

Former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson pitched new legislation to crack down on noncitizen voting on Friday, despite the fact the practice is already illegal and occurs rarely. It is already a crime to register or vote as a noncitizen in all state and federal elections, though Washington, D.C., and a handful of municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont allow noncitizen voting in local elections. Many have investigated noncitizen voting and found little evidence of it. The Brennan Center found just 30 suspected noncitizen votes amid 23.5 million votes in 2016, suggesting that suspected noncitizen votes accounted for 0.0001 % of votes cast. But Johnson and Trump have both long advanced baseless claims about election integrity.

CNN —After a man wrongfully spent 37 years in prison for rape and murder, the Tampa City Council unanimously voted Thursday to approve a $14 million settlement in a federal lawsuit. Robert DuBoise, who was convicted of the August 1983 rape and murder of 19-year-old Barbara Grams in Tampa Heights, was exonerated in September 2020 after DNA evidence established that he did not commit the crimes. That made him the 30th person exonerated from Florida’s death row, according to the Innocence Project of Florida, which assisted with DuBoise’s case. CNN has reached out to the Innocence Project of Florida for comment on the settlement. During the city council meeting, council member Charlie Miranda commented on what DuBoise has lost through the wrongful conviction.
