CNN —A man has died from an Ebola-like disease named Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) after being bitten by a tick in Spain. The 74-year-old died of organ failure on Saturday in an isolation unit at the La Paz-Carlos III Hospital in the Spanish capital, Madrid, a spokesperson for the hospital told CNN on Monday. Spain has developed a national plan to deal with tick-borne diseases, including CCHF, but people should take action to avoid tick bites, Lorenzo-Morales said. Consuelo Giménez Pardo, a lecturer in medical parasitology at the University of Alcalá in Madrid, told CNN that “there will undoubtedly be more cases” of CCHF in Spain. “I expect that we will see more cases in the coming years,” Thomson told CNN on Monday.

CNN —A mosaic from the floor of an ancient Roman villa has been uncovered on the seabed in the waters off Naples. A diver works on the submerged mosaic floor. The aim is to try to reconstitute an entire section of the floor, according to the post. The floor would have been laid toward the end of the Roman Empire, “shortly before bradyseism brought these wonders to the bottom of the sea,” he said. The last major eruption of Campi Flegrei was in 1538, and it created a new mountain in the bay.

London CNN —Komodo dragons, the world’s largest species of lizard, have iron-tipped teeth that help them to rip their prey apart, according to new research. Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia and weigh around 80 kilograms (176 pounds) on average. LeBlanc analyzed teeth from museum collections as well as from a Komodo dragon named Ganus, which lived at London Zoo until it was euthanized last year. Analysis showed that iron was already present when the teeth erupted from the gum tissue, and was also present despite Ganus having a very different diet to wild Komodo dragons, he added. The findings may help us understand how carnivorous dinosaurs, which had curved, serrated teeth similar to Komodo dragons, would have killed and eaten their prey, LeBlanc said.

CNN —Sharks living off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, according to new research, the first time that the drug has been detected in free-ranging sharks. Cocaine levels were around three times higher in muscle tissue than liver tissue, according to the study, while female sharks had higher cocaine concentrations in muscle tissue compared to males. Cocaine consumption has risen massively around the world in recent decades, according to the study. Increased consumption and poor sewage treatment infrastructure has made for increased cocaine levels in the sea, say researchers. Hauser Davis said that it is “very likely” that crustaceans, fish and other animals that the sharks prey on are also contaminated with cocaine.

CNN —A British-Canadian couple who were attempting to sail across the Atlantic have been found dead on an island off the east coast of Canada. The couple left Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia on June 11 en route to the Azores, a group of Portuguese islands in the mid-Atlantic, around 2,000 miles away. It is not clear why the couple abandoned the Theros and got into a lifeboat. They stayed in touch after Clibbery moved back to Canada and Packwood visited him in Salt Spring Island near Vancouver, where the Theros was docked, in spring 2016. “He took me on my first ever yacht trip and I loved it,” Packwood told The Guardian.

The Siamese crocodiles successfully hatched in five different nests in the Cardamom National Park in Cambodia, according to a statement from nature conservation charity Fauna & Flora Thursday. Siamese crocodiles are a freshwater species that can grow up to 4 meters (13.1 feet) in length. As part of these efforts, Siamese crocodiles are bred in captivity and then released into the wild, with 196 crocodiles successfully released since 2012. This suggests that long-term protection efforts are helping populations to start increasing again, said Flora & Fauna. “This discovery indicates that our conservation efforts have paid off, and I believe that with our ongoing conservation efforts, the population of Siamese crocodiles will continue to increase in the future,” said Chorn.

The court confirmed “by fingerprints that the body found yesterday in the mountains of Masca is that of Jay Slater.”The autopsy confirmed that the death was due to trauma “compatible with a fall in a rocky area.”Slater, who was 19 and from Lancashire, northern England, went missing almost a month ago after attending the NRG festival on the south of the island. He was last heard from around 8:30 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m, ET) on June 17, according to one of his friends, Lucy Mae, who set up a GoFundMe. CNN —Search teams looking for missing British teenager Jay Slater on the Spanish island of Tenerife have found the body of a young man. “After 29 days of constant search the lifeless body of a young man has been found in the Masca area” in the Tenerife mountains, the Guardia Civil, Spain’s law enforcement agency, said in a statement Monday. “All indications are that it could be the young British man missing since June 17, pending full identification,” the Guardia Civil said. Preliminary investigations suggest the young man “could have suffered an accident/fall in the inaccessible area,” it added. CNN —Scientists in Western Australia have found a tree frog which is bright blue, rather than the usual green, due to a rare genetic mutation. This is the first time a blue color mutation has been recorded in the magnificent tree frog, according to AWC. “Very occasionally, a green frog is missing yellow pigment in its skin, and it results in an entirely or mostly blue frog,” she said in the statement. “I’ve seen tens of thousands of frogs over the years, and only seen one blue frog - and it was nowhere near as spectacular as this magnificent tree frog. That’s the great thing about working in the Kimberley – you never know what rare wildlife you’re going to see each day.”

Everyone’s favorite ogre is heading back to town, with the the latest movie in the “Shrek” franchise set for release in mid-2026. Movie studio Dreamworks Animation confirmed in a post on X that “Shrek 5” will hit the big screen on July 1, 2026 – 16 years after the previous episode was released. Hong Kong CNN —A man was caught trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by stuffing them into his pants, according to the country’s customs authority. Customs officers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen intercepted the man traveling through Futian Port, a checkpoint between Hong Kong and mainland China, the agency said in a statement on Tuesday. Shenzhen CustomsDuring an inspection, officers found six canvas drawstring bags sealed with tape in the pockets of his pants. “Officers opened the bags and found that each bag contained a number of live snakes in various shapes and colors,” the statement said. “After counting, a total of 104 snakes were found.”Five species of snakes were later identified – the milk snake, western hognose snake, corn snake, Texas rat snake and bullsnake – four of which are non-native to China.

CNN —Hippos can get airborne when moving at high speeds over land, according to a new study. After analyzing videos showing 169 movement cycles from 32 hippos, researchers found that the fastest-moving animals spend around 15% of each stride off the ground. John Hutchinson, study lead author and a professor of evolutionary biomechanics at the RVC, told CNN that very little was known about the way that hippos move on land. “Hippos are one of the very few four legged animals at all that just trot,” said Hutchinson. One sample video that showed a baby pygmy hippo galloping has provided Hutchinson with a jumping off point for future research, he said, adding he wants to investigate whether small hippos, such as baby hippos and baby pygmy hippos, are able to gallop but lose this ability when they grow.

London CNN —A twice-stolen painting by Italian Renaissance master Titian, which was once found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London, sold for $22.3 million at auction on Tuesday. Titian, whose real name was Tiziano Vecellio, made the work in the first decade of the 16th century, at the beginning of his career. Measuring just 18.25 inches by 24.75 inches (46.2 centimeters x 62.9 centimeters), the painting is tiny compared with some of the massive works for which Titian became known later in his life. In 1995, it was stolen from Longleat, the home of Thynne’s descendants, and disappeared for seven years, before it was found at a bus stop in London by art detective Charles Hill. “This picture has captured the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to do so,” he added.

Milligan was born September 10, 1937, in Oak Park, Illinois, and died on April 18, according an obituary posted on the website of a funeral home in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he lived. It was during this period that he played his most famous role, appearing in 30 episodes of “Land of the Lost” from 1974 to 1975. CNN —Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been sentenced to 45 years in prison and given an $8 million fine by a US judge for drug trafficking offenses. He has previously denied the charges against him and at his sentencing on Wednesday insisted that he is innocent and was “wrongly and unjustly accused.”In March, a jury in New York found Hernandez guilty on three drug trafficking charges after a two-week trial in Manhattan federal court. He was extradited from Honduras after the US Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022. In exchange, prosecutors said, Hernández received millions of dollars in bribes that he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics. Hernández was president of Honduras from 2014 until 2022.

CNN —Authorities on the Spanish island of Tenerife continue to search for British teenager Jay Slater, who has been missing for a week after attending a music festival. Slater, 19, went missing after attending the NRG festival in the south of the island, and was last heard from between 8 and 9 a.m. local time (3-4 a.m. The campaign was organized by a friend of Slater’s named Lucy Mae, who said she had left the festival before Slater on Sunday. A search-and-rescue team looks for Slater near where he was last seen in Tenerife. Slater’s disappearance comes after a spate of tourists going missing in sweltering temperatures in Greece.

CNN —Two beluga whales have been rescued from the besieged city of Kharkiv in Ukraine and taken to an aquarium in Valencia, Spain, in a complex operation. A multinational team involving marine mammal care experts from Oceanogràfic de Valencia, the largest oceanarium in Europe; Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta; and SeaWorld were involved in the high-risk journey. The pair of belugas – a 15-year-old male named Plombir and a 14-year-old female called Miranda – arrived in “delicate health” Tuesday evening after a “grueling journey,” according to Georgia Aquarium. “The city is facing increasing threat from artillery fire, which has intensified in recent weeks, with bombs dropping within a few hundred meters of the aquarium,” Georgia Aquarium said in a press release. The journey began Monday when the team first removed the whales from Ukraine’s NEMO Dolphinarium and drove them 12 hours from Kharkiv to Odesa.
