Wall Street could be in for another solid quarter as stocks have embarked on a strong start to the year. Specifically, in the second quarter, the S & P 500 was higher 9 out of 11 times, averaging a 2.7% gain. Significantly, two occurrences of those 10% first-quarter gains Detrick reviewed took place during election years, with the S & P 500 ending higher on the year. In 1976, the S & P 500 went on to register a 1.5% increase in the second quarter, and a 4.6% jump for the rest of the year. The Wall Street firm maintained its year-end S & P 500 target of 5,050, representing a 3.8% slide from Wednesday's close.

American homeowners could see a significant drop in the cost of selling their homes after a real estate trade group agreed to a landmark deal that will eliminate a bedrock of the industry, the 6 percent sales commission. The National Association of Realtors, a powerful organization that has set the guidelines for home sales for decades, has agreed to settle a series of lawsuits by paying $418 million in damages and by eliminating its rules on commissions. Legal counsel for N.A.R. approved the agreement early Friday morning, and The New York Times obtained a copy of the signed document. “This will blow up the market and would force a new business model,” said Norm Miller, a professor emeritus of real estate at the University of San Diego.

Key takeaways from the latest jobs report

“The economy remains strong, held up by a robust labor market,” wrote Christopher Rupkey, chief economist with FwdBonds, in a note Friday. Still, Friday’s jobs report also showed that the whopping gains initially recorded for January and December were revised down by a combined 167,000 jobs. January’s job gains now sit at an estimated 229,000 (down from the blowout 353,000); and December’s job growth at 290,000 (down from 333,000). In February, that included construction (up 23,000 jobs); transportation and warehousing (up 19,700 jobs); and retail (up 18,700 jobs). Friday’s jobs report showed that wage growth is indeed slowing.

What to expect in Friday’s jobs report

New York CNN —Don’t be surprised if Friday’s jobs report shows that February’s employment gains were far below those reported for January. In fact, it would continue a history-making stretch of labor market expansion. Friday’s jobs report could very well provide a more reliable read on what’s actually happening in the labor market than the jobs reports of recent months’ past, Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told CNN. “And so, February might give us a better understanding of the underlying rate of job growth,” she said. What the other labor market data is showingOther economic data released this week reinforces the idea that the US labor market is cooling but remains on solid footing.

Bruno Richard Hauptmann’s mug shot. The wooden electric chair where he was put to death. A sponge like the one that was dampened with salt water and placed on his head to conduct the deadly jolts of electricity. In the decades since, as the keepers of the Lindbergh kidnapping archives can attest, public interest in the case has never subsided — nor has skepticism about Hauptmann’s guilt. But a bizarre and grisly new theory about Lindbergh’s potential involvement in his son’s death, and renewed legal pressure to force DNA testing of evidence, have combined to thrust one of the country’s most enduring murder mysteries squarely back into public consciousness.

Gershwin intended the rhapsody to fuse the respective powers of classical music and jazz. In the article I cited above, “The Worst Masterpiece: ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ at 100,” Iverson offers an intriguing take: that “Rhapsody in Blue,” while having its charms, is just too square to merit being played as often as it is. He believes the rhapsody isn’t truly jazzy enough, and specifically that it only lightly dwells in African-based rhythm. But to Gershwin, the rhapsody was precisely what it needed to be. I resolved, if possible, to kill that misconception with one sturdy blow.” So while the rhapsody certainly has its foot-tapping sections, it also sails, rests, jolts and soars.

That could be a sign that workers feel less confident about the state of the labor market. AdvertisementFriday's blowout jobs report confirmed the labor market is still holding firm, but one often-ignored statistic could signal a looming slowdown. "The second straight 2.2% quits rate — just below the pre-Covid level — is more important, because it clearly signals slower wage gains." "All that air is coming out of the labor market, even though hiring remains strong." "The job market is steadily returning to its pre-pandemic self," Morningstar's Preston Caldwell said in a research note.

New York CNN —The first jobs report for 2024, set to be released at 8:30 am ET Friday, is expected to underscore the strength of the US economy despite 11 rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. That can make the January jobs report among the trickiest to forecast, said Sarah House, a senior economist with Wells Fargo. Friday’s jobs report also will include the final annual benchmark review of payroll data for the 12 months that ended in March 2023. However, excluding January 2023, last month’s job cuts were the highest seen in January since 2009, according to Challenger. US worker productivity grew 3.2% in the fourth quarter, according to a BLS report released Thursday.

However, despite the uptick, the labor market remains in the throes of a cooldown amid the Federal Reserve’s aggressive actions to curb inflation. The United States had an estimated 9.026 million job openings in December, according to seasonally adjusted data released as part of the BLS’ monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report. Economists had expected December job openings to drop for a fourth consecutive month and land at 8.714 million. Outside of the initial stages of the pandemic, that was the lowest hires rate since 2014. At one point in early 2022, job openings soared north of 12 million.

The labor market may be returning to pre-pandemic conditions, Goldman Sachs found. "Broadly speaking, our analysis indicates a labor market returning to pre-pandemic norms, best characterized as a somewhat tight labor market that does not pose an inflation problem," the economists wrote. ET, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury was down by over 4 basis points at 4.239%. U.S. Treasury yields declined Tuesday as investors awaited jobs data that could provide hints about the state of the economy and the impact of restrictive Federal Reserve monetary policy. The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged then, and many investors are still hoping for guidance around when policymakers may start thinking about cutting rates. Various economic data points are, however, expected beforehand and could provide hints about the state of the economy and whether higher interest rates are having their desired effect in cooling the economy. Later in the week, ADP's private payrolls report, as well as nonfarm payrolls and unemployment data for November, are expected.
