Activist investor Nelson Peltz's renewed fight for Disney (DIS) board seats is a positive for shareholders because he will push for a level of financial discipline that the company has lacked. Peltz's Trian Partners, a major Disney shareholder, said Thursday it will launch a new challenge to get board representation. As part of its release, Trian said the investment firm's Disney stake is currently worth roughly $3 billion. New York Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin, left, and Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, speak during the Times' annual DealBook Summit in New York City, Nov. 29, 2023. Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said Wednesday he will no longer tolerate his company's partners and creative team prioritizing messaging over storytelling. Iger had been in charge of "creative endeavors" in 2020 and 2021, even while Bob Chapek ran the company as CEO. Disney named two new board members on Wednesday — former Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman and former Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch — as it gears up for a potential proxy fight. Nelson Peltz renews proxy fight against Disney

New York CNN —Activist shareholder Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management has launched a new proxy fight against Disney, just months after backing off from its earlier push after returned chief executive Bob Iger announced a vast cost-cutting plan for the media conglomerate. Trian declined to comment on how many seats it is seeking on Disney’s board, but said in the release that Disney has turned down its request for representation, including for Peltz. Trian’s reignition of its proxy fight comes a day after Disney revealed a shuffle to its board, with Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman and former CEO of Sky Jeremy Darroch to join as new directors. Peltz in January launched a bid for a seat on Disney’s board after the company fired Bob Chapek in November 2022. We will be watching,” Peltz said on CNBC shortly after the conclusion of Iger’s TV interview in February, where the chief executive laid out his cost-cutting plan, addressed right-wing criticism of Disney and his decision to return to the company.

“Quality needs attention to deliver quality, it doesn’t happen by accident,” Iger said. Iger, speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin at The New York Times’ annual DealBook summit, acknowledged that Disney had “diluted” the caliber of films produced by Marvel. The company, he added, had “made too many” film sequels that had not been well received by audiences or critics. Francis deSouza, the former CEO of Illumina — a biotech company — said he would not seek re-election to the board. In a statement, Mark Parker, the chairman of Disney’s board, praised Gorman’s succession planning abilities at Morgan Stanley.

Investor Sarat Sethi shared his stock picks to position for a higher-for-longer interest rate environment. Additionally, Sethi favors Uber Technologies over Lyft , saying the former's "capital allocation has been fabulous." The managing director said he favors Uber Technologies' positive cash flow , which it reached for the first time this year, as well as its brand and international footprint. "In an environment where rates are where they are, you're not getting a free call option for just growth without any cash flow." NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Bank of America (BAC.N) CEO Brian Moynihan said on Wednesday he expects a soft landing in which the U.S. economy avoids a recession even as consumer spending and commercial borrowing slow. "Our research team is the best in the business and they have moved to the soft landing category. They have a slowdown in the economy in the middle of next year," Moynihan said in a wide-ranging interview at the Reuters NEXT conference. For months, Moynihan has cited healthy consumer finances and spending as indications that the U.S. economy could avoid recession. The hot new business class ticket within Asia is in fact, Hong Kong to Mumbai. Before the pandemic, more than half of the Asian top line of U.S. bulge bracket banks typically came from Greater China which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Overall, IPO fees in India have risen from 1% of proceeds in 2017 closer to 2% in recent years, LSEG data shows. Hong Kong bankers are not going to relocate to India any time soon but while they wait out a slow and uncertain recovery in China activity, the trip to India looks increasingly worthwhile. Proceeds from initial public offerings in India amounted to $3.8 billion across 172 deals as of Oct. 24, according to LSEG data.

A good place to start is outside Morgan Stanley’s home market. Morgan Stanley’s two last big acquisitions were chunky, at a combined $20 billion, but also filled niches. E*Trade, an online brokerage, brought millions of households and company employees that Morgan Stanley hadn’t previously served. Eaton Vance, a U.S. asset manager, peddles investment products that Morgan Stanley now funnels through sales teams in far-flung markets. CEO Jane Fraser shows no inclination to sell private banking, which for now sits within the group’s $756 billion global wealth management bucket.

James Gorman has spent nearly 14 years as Morgan Stanley CEO. Photo: Michael Bucher/The Wall Street JournalJames Gorman guided Morgan Stanley through years of superlow interest rates and booming stock markets. His successor, Ted Pick , might have to come up with some new ideas for a new era. Gorman, who will step down at the end of the year after almost 14 years as chief executive, bet big on wealth and asset management by absorbing all of Smith Barney and later buying E*Trade and Eaton Vance. And by valuation, Morgan Stanley has often been the leader of the pack, generally trading at a higher price-to-book ratio than even JPMorgan since the start of last year.

The three-decade Morgan Stanley veteran started his career at the bank and came up the ranks to run trading, equity capital markets and fixed income. It is unusual for Wall Street CEO candidates to stay on if they are not selected, and the bonuses offered at Morgan Stanley break from that tradition. Since becoming CEO in 2010, Gorman has transformed Morgan Stanley, creating a wealth management behemoth and making transformative acquisitions of broker E*Trade and asset manager Eaton Vance.

James Gorman is leaving his job at Morgan Stanley near the top. But not quite at it. Since he took over as the bank's chief executive at the start of 2010, Gorman’s strategy to bet big on wealth and asset management has proved to be the right one in the market’s eyes. While none of the big banks have beaten the S&P 500 over that time, Morgan Stanley’s 8.7% annualized total return is still nearly three points better than its closest rival, Goldman Sachs, at 5.9%, according to FactSet data.
