PARIS — Since qualifying for the Olympics in 2021 only to be barred from competing, Sha’Carri Richardson had waited three years for the second chance that arrived Saturday night. Yet right from the gun, Richardson was forced to play catch-up to Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, who left no doubt on her way to a gold medal in her Olympic debut in 10.72 seconds. It was a repeat of the semifinal earlier Saturday night when Alfred also beat Richardson convincingly. In Paris, Richardson planned to leave that turbulent period like the seven other racers in the Olympic final — behind her. Instead, it was Alfred who was never seriously challenged on her way to gold, screaming in joy as she crossed the finish line.

Daniel Chiang can remember one Asian American who ran for president in 2020: Andrew Yang, a Taiwanese American entrepreneur. But he was surprised to learn last week that there was another person running for president then, and in 2024, who counted herself an Asian American: Kamala Harris. But Ms. Harris, whose mother emigrated from India and whose father emigrated from Jamaica, is less known as an Indian American and Asian American. Asked to name a famous Asian American, only 2 percent of Americans said Kamala Harris, according to a recent survey by The Asian American Foundation. Ms. Harris does not shy away from talking about her Indian heritage and Asian American identity.

In the wake of Joe Biden’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, a great deal of attention has focused on whether America is ready for a Black female president. Unmentioned is a question of equal complexity: Why is Harris Black? So in terms of her ancestry, she is as much South Asian as she is Black. Barack Obama, with one Black and one white parent, is called Black. Harris often mentions the South Asian half of her heritage, but in traditional American discourse, it feels off to categorize her as simply South Asian — like Aziz Ansari or Mindy Kaling — and leave it there.
