The Brooklyn, New York, apartment building of Columbia University’s chief operating officer was vandalized with red paint and crickets, police said. The Brooklyn, New York, apartment building of Columbia University’s chief operating officer was vandalized Thursday with red paint and crickets, police said. A preliminary investigation determined that two people threw red paint inside the building’s vestibule and unleashed a box containing crickets and mealworms, police said in a statement. Several other people involved caused “damage to the front of the building by throwing paint on the building and sidewalk,” according to police. Photos released by police showed red paint splattered across the sidewalk and on the wall of the building.

Although steadily rising global temperatures and their effects are increasingly hard to ignore, Burt believes they're not yet factored into property values. Flood insurance costs will skyrocket since they're severely underpriced to climate risk, his research indicates. A general view of the Baker Library/Bloomberg Center on February 17, 2024, at Harvard Business School in Allston, MA. Harvard University failed to persuade a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit in which Jewish students accused the Ivy League school of letting its campus become a bastion of antisemitism. Without ruling on the merits, U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns said the plaintiffs plausibly alleged that Harvard's response to on-campus incidents was inadequate, and that "the facts as pled show that Harvard failed its Jewish students." Students sued in January, accusing Harvard of selectively enforcing its anti-discrimination policies to avoid protecting Jewish students from harassment, ignoring their pleas for protection, and hiring professors who supported anti-Jewish violence and spread antisemitic propaganda. Stearns found sufficient allegations that Harvard acted with deliberate indifference toward its Jewish population.

The laws of capitalism say we have to constantly be on the move — work hard, play hard, consume hard, rinse and repeat. Leading real-estate analyst Ivy Zelman recently told Business Insider that entry-level houses are still about 20% more expensive than normal. While the unemployment rate remains relatively low, it has now risen for four straight months and appears to be accelerating. A higher unemployment rate is a troubling sign for employees, including those who have jobs and aren't looking to leave. In a tight job market, workers can demand higher raises since there aren't as many viable replacements for them if they left. Note that data for the cities is from June — the most current data obtained by Business Insider — while the national data is from July.

Mortgage interest rates eased very slightly last week, but not enough to get today's potential homebuyers off the fence. Homebuyers are also likely waiting for interest rates to drop further. While mortgage rates don't follow the Fed exactly (they follow loosely the yield on the 10-year Treasury), rates will come down if investors believe inflation is easing. "We'd probably want to see mortgage rates come down 100 basis points, so I think if we had a five handle, even in the high fives, I think the market could see more momentum." Rates today are very slightly lower than they were last year at this time.

To the Editor:Re “Should American Jews Abandon Elite Universities?,” by Bret Stephens (column, June 26):Mr. Stephens has issued a sobering and well-documented indictment of antisemitism on elite campuses. The question asked by the headline is timely and troubling for many Jewish high school students and their families. But the insensitivity and hypocrisy of supposedly idealistic and enlightened college students may be the most striking and unkind cut of all. “Safe spaces” and rules against “microaggressions” have become commonplace on campuses. Yet when Jewish students made it known that calling for deadly attacks on Jews (“Globalize the intifada!”) is offensive and intimidating, they were ignored.

Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. Skills are "far more important" than having a college degree for many jobs, he added. Dimon said JP Morgan Chase has eliminated degree requirements for most jobs at the bank and pivoted toward more skills-based hiring. About 80% of JP Morgan Chase's current roles for "experienced hires," or candidates with full-time work experience, don't require a college degree, a company spokesperson confirmed to Fortune. For context, 62% of Americans don't have a college degree, according to the latest Census data. That means degree requirements can lock out millions of job seekers with alternative qualifications from high-paying opportunities.

As a way to dissociate from political news, I’ve spent the past week mainlining stories about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders; it started when I binged the new Netflix docuseries “America’s Sweethearts,” which follows the women trying out and training for the 2023-2024 squad. I’m a New York Jew who got kicked out of ballet class when I was 4 because I lacked any discernible talent or interest. So I didn’t expect to fall in love with a show that is so steeped in Southern and dance culture. Because the newbies are competing for positions against veterans, the acceptance rate in any given year can be comparable to that of an Ivy League school. The seven episodes of the Netflix series weren’t enough for me.

But these days, we're seeing parents bestow names typically given to girls on their sons. Parents who choose these names think it's better to grow into an adult-sounding name than outgrow a baby-ish name. Names that end in "ai" are easily pronounced in many languages, including indigenous languages, European languages, Japanese, and African languages. But now we're seeing parents embrace that names can be girly but still strong. We're seeing a rise in long, elaborate names but also in shorter, cutesy names for girls.
