How the Greenland shark can live for centuries
  + stars: | 2024-12-14 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Ocean secretsA Greenland shark is seen swimming beneath the ice near northern Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Avalon.red/Alamy Stock PhotoThe rarely seen Greenland shark is a sluggish creature, slowly swimming through the deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The polar fish is the only species of shark that can withstand the freezing temperatures year-round. The large sharks also live to be more than 400 years old, and some of them may have been alive since colonial times. The carcass, studied by whale scientists and members of the local Māori community, yielded precious clues about the deep-sea-diving animal.

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLANDAn impressive start for a young advocateFor a time, the man born Nicholas Alahverdian went by Nicholas Rossi, after his adoptive stepfather. When Antypas told him he was fired, she said, social media posts appeared claiming her vegan cheese was fake, as did a “fraud alert” website that had her passport photo framed as a mug shot. The hundreds of mysterious New Jersey drone sightings are sparking mounting demands for a more forceful federal response, calls that come as even more sightings are being reported in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Overnight, 79 sightings were reported across New Jersey alone, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. An ongoing investigation leads officials to believe previously reported New Jersey sightings over the Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County and Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster were indeed drones, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. “The feds can’t control the air space, and yesterday my phone didn’t stop with drone sightings messages,” he said. “These are drones, unmanned aerial systems that have been used as weapons of war around the globe.”

Skepticism over government responseOne New Jersey lawmaker is accusing federal officials of lying about the presence and purpose of the mysterious drones. Connecticut State Police announced Friday they have deployed a drone detection system to assist in investigative efforts into unauthorized drone sightings reported over Fairfield County. Josh Shapiro said his administration is “aware of” the reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. Residents in New York’s Rockland County reported drone sightings starting as early as November. Then, when I was riding my bike one day, a car hit me, and I was left with injuries. Although I'd been depressed and lonely at my Long Island high school, going to college at Binghamton University improved my life. I could pay the rent for my one-bedroom apartment, save in a 401(k), and pick up any tab I needed to. An avid cyclist, I'd learned there were only two types of bicycle crashes: those you could walk away from and those you couldn't. Two years later, I still need therapy — physical and psychological.

Vietnam alone plans to have 10 new submarine cables by 2030. They added that Keppel prefers a more ambitious cable plan involving a consortium of investors. Sovico, a conglomerate whose operations include aviation and banking, has recently announced plans on data centre development. Singapore is a major hub for data centres and undersea cables, but the small island-state has nearly saturated its data usage capacity. A spokesperson for Keppel declined to answer Reuters questions about the two cable plans, saying: "We do not comment on market speculation."

CNN —A US serviceman was sentenced to five years in prison for kidnapping and raping an underage girl last year, an official from Naha District Court on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa told CNN. “The girl’s testimony that she told her age by gestures and other means is sufficiently credible from the security camera footage,” the judge said. The US military handed the 25-year-old serviceman over to Japanese authorities on the same day. WASHINGTON — A group of House Republicans representing high-tax states is demanding an increase to the federal deduction for state and local taxes, also known as “SALT,” in order to support an extension of President-elect Donald Trump's tax law next year. The battle centers on the $10,000 limit on deductions for state and local taxes, which Republicans established in a 2017 tax cut bill. You guys can do the math on that one,” Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., a proponent of a bigger SALT deduction, told NBC News. Because an expiration of [the 2017 tax law] would completely eliminate [the cap on] SALT,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., a member of the tax-writing Ways & Means Committee, said in an interview. “I think it would be fiscally irresponsible not to have a SALT cap,” said Tillis, who represents a state where taxpayers don’t use the deduction as much.

Still, even without a favorable response, Trump’s invitation to Xi marks a significant development that sheds light on the president-elect’s confidence and ambition as he wields power ahead of his second term. This is a reminder of Trump’s fondness for foreign policy by grand gesture and his willingness to trample diplomatic codes with his unpredictable approach. The Xi invitation also shows that Trump believes that the force of his personality alone can be a decisive factor in forging diplomatic breakthroughs. But at the same time, it’s fair to question whether the fire and fury of his first-term foreign policy delivered durable results. “We’ve been talking and discussing with President Xi, some things and others, other world leaders, and I think we’re going to do very well all around,” Trump said.

CNN —A male humpback whale has made an extraordinary journey from South America to Africa — traveling more than 13,046 kilometers (8,106 miles) — the longest migration recorded for a single whale, a new study found. Humpback whales typically return to specific breeding locations each year because whale populations tend to be geographically distinct. The future of migrationWhaling in the 20th century killed nearly 95% to 99% of the humpback whale population in the Indian Ocean, according to Cheeseman. As a result, little information remains about the behavior and lives of humpback whales in that region. However, if exceptions to standard migratory patterns continue, Cheeseman suggests that humpback whales may adopt behaviors from other populations.
