The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor asked judges on Wednesday to issue an arrest warrant for the head of Myanmar’s military regime for crimes committed against the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority. From a refugee camp in Bangladesh, the court’s top prosecutor, Karim Khan, said in a statement that he intends to request more warrants for Myanmar’s leaders soon. “In doing so, we will be demonstrating, together with all of our partners, that the Rohingya have not been forgotten. The allegations stem from a counterinsurgency campaign that Myanmar’s military began in August 2017 in response to an insurgent attack. In 2018 judges at the court ruled the prosecutor could look into crimes which were “completed” on the territory of a member state, such as forcible deportation.

China’s foreign ministry said the communications channels with Sweden and other relevant parties were “unobstructed,” when asked about Sweden’s request. Western intelligence officials from multiple countries have said they are confident the Chinese ship caused the cuts to both cables. CNN —The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader for crimes committed against the persecuted Rohingya minority group. As a result of the violence, the ICC estimated that more than one million Rohingya were forcibly displaced from Myanmar — many fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh. Min Aung Hlaing is the leader of Myanmar’s powerful military, known as the Tatmadaw, which seized power in 2021. But even If the warrant is approved, the ICC could be limited in its jurisdiction as Myanmar is not among the 123 member states of the court. However, member countries could be obligated to transfer Min Aung Hlaing into ICC custody if he enters their territory after the warrant is issued.

President-elect Donald Trump has called for cutting the corporate tax rate – and a slate of companies could stand to benefit, according to an analysis from Wolfe Research. That would be a reduction from the current corporate tax rate of 21%. A corporate tax rate of 18% would increase S & P 500 earnings per share by $5, while a 15% rate would lift earnings per share by $10, he said. Senyek's team identified companies that could see the greatest impact on their earnings per share from a lower tax rate. Wolfe also highlighted Amazon in its list of companies that could benefit from a lower corporate tax rate.

London CNN —Volkswagen has sold its plant in Xinjiang — a Chinese region beset by accusations of human rights abuses — citing “economic reasons.”“There is no business case for (the plant),” said a spokesperson, noting that it produced combustion engine vehicles until 2019 and, since then, has effectively operated as a distribution center for models produced in other factories. The Volkswagen spokesperson told CNN that SAIC-Volkswagen sold the plant, located in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi, to SMVIC, a subsidiary of Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, but declined to disclose the value of the sale. The sale comes after governments and human rights groups have, for years, accused China of using forced labor and committing other abuses, such as mass detentions, in Xinjiang against the Uyghur Muslim minority group. Volkswagen has faced criticism from rights activists for owning a plant in the region, but it has said there are no signs that forced labor has taken place in the facility. When asked to comment on the FT article, a spokesperson for Volkswagen told CNN that “Volkswagen always adheres to the legal requirements in its communications.

Anthony Wallace | Afp | Getty ImagesThe shipping industry is contending with a worldwide shortage of seafarers, and it's fueling a troubling mix of fake resumes, accidents at sea, and elevated freight rates. "We have been seeing a consistent shortage of seafarers," Rhett Harris, senior manning analyst at Drewry, told CNBC. The Philippines, China, Russia, Ukraine and Indonesia are the largest suppliers of the world's seafarers, according to the most recent seafarer workforce breakdown report by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and BIMCO in 2021. Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian and Ukrainian seafarers made up almost 15% of the global shipping workforce, ICS data showed. "Policymakers need to create national strategies to address the seafarer shortage," the shipping organization said.

“We have never experienced a period of benefit when we had high tariffs,” he said, referring both to Ikea and the global economy. We will need to understand and adapt.”On Monday, President-elect Trump promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China. The bulk of Ikea’s goods — some 70% — are produced in Europe, with the remaining 30% made in Asia, mostly China. Last year, Ikea cut prices on roughly 2,000 products — at a cost of more than €2 billion ($2.1 billion) — to give inflation-weary consumers a break. “IT HAS THE spirit of a loft,” says the interior designer Martin Brûlé, surveying the apartment that inhabits an entire floor of the Sherry-Netherland, the 38-story Jazz Age Fifth Avenue co-op and hotel overlooking Central Park at 59th Street. “The stereotype of a New York loft is that it’s downtown with this artsy feeling, mismatched furniture. Well, this space has all those elements. Brûlé has since transformed the 11,000 square feet, which once housed the hotel’s barbershop, gym and several offices, into a wildly imaginative and distinctively uptown version of open-plan living. The US and France will play a role in monitoring for potential violations of the deal. Regional experts say the US role in monitoring creates complications and challenges. A cease-fire agreement that aims to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, marks a hopeful diplomatic moment after nearly 14 months of conflict. Gerges said that the inclusion of the US in the cease-fire monitoring process "complicates" matters.
