HONG KONG — Former Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai began testifying Wednesday in his landmark national security trial that is widely seen as a measure of press freedom and judicial independence in the Chinese territory. He is fighting charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring with others to issue seditious publications. Lai, 76, faces up to life in prison if convicted under a national security law imposed by Beijing. But critics say that promise has become threadbare under the rubric of maintaining national security. It added that judges remain independent and partial when handling national security cases.

His Cabinet picks, including the Treasury secretary, traditionally have to be confirmed by the Senate. “The Treasury secretary has historically played a significant role in advancing the administration’s tax policy priorities,” Akabas said. Next year, Trump’s Treasury secretary will act as the quarterback, executing his economic gameplan. It will also fall to Trump’s Treasury secretary to put out fires in financial markets or in the real economy like the regional bank failures that rocked Wall Street and Washington early last year. Trump’s Treasury pick will also help manage the complicated relationship between the president and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

But we also saw the value of having a joint account for shared expenses, especially because we decided to split financial responsibility 50/50. We opened a joint bank account for shared expensesUpon moving in together, my wife and I first opened a joint checking and savings account for shared expenses. Our joint account also gave us a space dedicated to shared long-term savings goals, such as a wedding and a house. HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of leading pro-democracy figures to up to 10 years prison Tuesday in the single largest trial under a national security law that critics say has been used to all but eliminate political dissent in the Chinese territory. Lawyers for the defendants have argued that such action was within the bounds of Hong Kong law. In March, Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature also enacted local national security legislation. Among the 47 are “second-tier pan-democrats” who were previously active members of the Hong Kong legislature, Burns said. Hong Kong officials said last month that there was no time limit for prosecuting the cases, noting that it takes time to gather evidence.

And to run the new cost-cutting department, Trump tapped the businessman he calls the world's "greatest cutter" — Elon Musk. If you're looking to take a chainsaw to the federal government, Musk seems perfectly suited to the job. When it comes to federal spending, one person's waste is another person's bread and butter. And his massive investments in electric vehicles and social media are dependent on all sorts of federal spending and oversight. AdvertisementHigh housing costs, driven in large part by a shortage of homes, are keeping inflation sticky. Economists say Trump's proposals are a mixed bag; some could help housing costs and some could hurt. Ultimately, housing policy experts and industry leaders say housing costs will largely depend on how much new supply can be delivered to the market, which is suffering from a severe shortage of homes. Federal housing assistanceDuring his first term, Trump repeatedly proposed major cuts to housing assistance for households with low incomes or members with disabilities. This would make it harder for lower-income Americans to afford homes and slow down affordable housing construction.

There's little appetite on Wall Street for undermining the central bank or ousting Jerome Powell. On Friday, billionaire Elon Musk endorsed a suggestion to let the president control the Federal Reserve, which is run by Chair Jerome Powell. Advertisement"He seems to be someone who has the ear of the president," Mark Spindel, an investment manager who co-wrote a history of Fed independence, told Business Insider of Musk's influence. “President Trump is going to hit the Justice Department with a blowtorch, and Matt Gaetz is that torch,” Steve Bannon, Trump’s former White House strategist, told NBC News. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said she didn't think Gaetz was "a serious nomination for the attorney general." From bitter experience, Trump knows that he needs an attorney general he can trust implicitly, and it might be worth the political capital to battle for Gaetz's confirmation. Little happened in Trump’s first term that angered him as much as Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself and appoint a special counsel to investigate whether there were links between his 2016 campaign and Russia. In Gaetz, Trump would get an attorney general who has said Trump won the election that year, as well as an iconoclast who shares his willingness to upset the status quo.
