[1/2] The suspected Chinese spy balloon drifts to the ocean after being shot down off the coast in Surfside Beach, South Carolina, U.S. February 4, 2023. REUTERS/Randall HillWASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Sunday it is searching for remnants of the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon it shot down the previous day, in a dramatic spy saga that has further strained American-Chinese relations. A successful recovery could potentially give the United States insight into China's spying capabilities, though U.S. officials have downplayed the balloon's impact on national security. Democrats said Biden's decision to wait to shoot down the balloon until it had passed over the United States protected civilians from debris crashing to Earth. The Pentagon will brief senators on the balloon and Chinese surveillance on Feb. 15, Schumer said.
Chinese spy balloons had crossed into the US at least three times under Trump, officials said. Trump and former defense officials said over the weekend they were not aware of this. The sightings were only discovered "after the prior administration left," senior defense officials told both The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. "It never happened with us under the Trump administration and if it did, we would have shot it down immediately," Trump told Fox News Digital on Sunday. It's also unclear if balloons spotted during the Trump administration were shot down.
GOP House Intel Chair Mike Turner said the Biden admin "lacks urgency" following the balloon incident. The Chinese surveillance balloon "completed its mission" in observing US military sites, Turner said. Clearly, this was an attempt by China to gather information to defeat our command and control of our sensitive missile offensive nuclear weapons sites. Turner joins a legion of Republicans blaming Biden for the balloon gaining access to US airspace and remaining there for several days. "The president allowed this to go across our most sensitive sites and wasn't even going to tell the American public.

Schumer said downing the balloon into the ocean likely enables U.S. intelligence officials to examine its remnants. The Pentagon will brief senators on the balloon and Chinese surveillance on Feb. 15, Schumer said. Trump on Sunday disputed Austin's statement that Chinese government surveillance balloons had transited the continental United States briefly three times during his presidency. Speaking on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures" show, Trump's former director of national intelligence John Ratcliffe also denied such balloon incidents.
GOP Rep. Mike Turner said President Biden is a "serial classified document hoarder" after more documents were found at his residence. Turner previously suggested Donald Trump had hundreds of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago to help him write a memoir. "Apparently, he's become a serial classified document hoarder," Turner said of Biden Sunday morning on "Face the Nation" on CBS News. I mean the only reason you can think of as to why anyone would take classified documents out of a classified space and home is to show them to somebody." Both incidents have prompted special counsel investigations, but Turner appeared to have more concerns over Biden's classified documents.
After the FBI found more classified documents at the Wilmington, Delaware, home of President Joe Biden during a consensual search Friday, legislators said Sunday that Biden's actions were "unbelievable" and "irresponsible." The discovery was the fourth time since November that classified records or materials have been found at a private address of Biden's. Former President Donald Trump is under criminal investigation by another special counsel for taking hundreds of classified records and other government documents from the White House when he left office. Most Americans think both Biden and Trump have handled classified material inappropriately, according to a poll released Sunday by ABC News. "There is one important document that distinguishes former President Trump from President Biden — that's a warrant," Coons said.
WASHINGTON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Aides to U.S. President Joe Biden have discovered at least one more batch of classified documents in a location separate from a think tank office he used after serving as vice president, news outlets reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. The NBC News report said the classification level, number and precise location of the additional documents was not immediately clear. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. A spokesperson for Senator Marco Rubio, the committee's Republican vice chair, said Rubio and Warner had written to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, asking for access to the classified documents. The Justice Department is separately probing Trump's handling of highly sensitive classified documents that he retained at his Florida resort after leaving the White House in January 2021.
U.S. President Joe Biden shakes hands with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a bilateral meeting at the North American Leaders' Summit in Mexico City, Mexico, January 10, 2023. "Why didn't the 'Justice' Department announce the Highly Classified documents found in the Biden Office before the Election?" Trump wrote in a post on his social media site, Truth Social. U.S. President Joe Biden attends a news conference at Waldorf Astoria in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia July 15, 2022. Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters"This discovery of classified information would put President Biden in potential violation of laws protecting national security, including the Espionage Act and Presidential Records Act," Turner wrote.
Biden told reporters at a joint news conference with the leaders of Mexico and Canada that he takes classified documents seriously. A Democrat, Biden has faced criticism from Republicans after his Justice Department launched an investigation last year into Republican former President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents discovered at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Investigators tried to get Trump to return any remaining classified records through a grand jury subpoena and a visit to his Mar-a-Lago estate. On that visit, Trump's advisers returned a few dozen additional classified records, and attested that no other classified material remained in the residence. And as soon as they did, they realized there were several classified documents in that box.
House Republicans have announced a new slate of committee chairs for the new Congress. Six of the committees will be chaired by a man named Mike or Michael. On Monday, House Republicans sorted out a number of contested chairmanships, and House Majority Steve Scalise released a list of recommendations for chairmanships that were ratified by the conference on Tuesday. The result: men named "Mike" will outnumber women two-to-one among committee chairs. Under Democratic leadership in the previous Congress, 7 House committees were chaired by women.
Ronnie Turner, the son of music icon Tina Turner, has died, his family said. It was not immediately clear Friday what caused Ronnie Turner's death. Ronnie Turner’s brother, Craig Turner, died by suicide in 2018. His aunt, Alline Bullock, Tina Turner’s sister, passed away in 2010. His father, Ike Turner, died in 2007.
Trump’s post came after Twitter CEO Elon Musk promoted a series of tweets Friday revealing internal documents about how the company handled a New York Post article about Hunter Biden in 2020. While he said he “vehemently disagrees” with the former president’s statement, Turner did not directly answer the question, even after host Margaret Brennan pressed repeatedly. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., a vocal opponent of Trump who serves on the House Jan. 6 committee, called Trump's statement “insane." Meanwhile, Democrats swiftly rebuked Trump’s statement shortly after it was posted. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he “vociferously” condemns Trump’s remarks and urged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do the same.
A new Morning Consult poll shows Ukraine is not a top foreign policy priority for US voters. The Ukraine war ranks sixth among Democrats and 10th among Republicans in foreign priorities. This comes as House Republicans signal they'll move to slow US aid to Kyiv. Earlier on in the war, polling showed strong support among US voters for US aid to Ukraine. The incoming Republican majority in the House has signaled that it won't support massive aid packages to Kyiv.

JERUSALEM, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday called on Israel to join the fight against Russia and repeated a request for Israeli air defense systems. Zelenskiy said in a video speech to a conference for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Or with those who turn a blind eye to Russian terror, even when the cost of continued terror is the complete destruction of global security," he said. Republican U.S. Representative Mike Turner told reporters on a conference call after he travelled to Ukraine that he was "personally disappointed" with Israel. Zelenskiy said that was not enough and asked that Israeli leaders reconsider sending air defenses as well.
