Air France-KLM has tended to let airlines it invests in keep their operations and branding. With the process still in its infancy, Air France-KLM has a chance to make a pitch to TAP now off the back of SAS. LONG FIGHT AHEADThere are remaining challenges for Air France-KLM as it looks to clear regulatory hurdles with SAS, including approval from American and European policymakers. Europe's airline industry has a history of cultural and political barriers to smooth integration, even within Air France-KLM itself. Air France-KLM is a member of the rival SkyTeam alliance.

Almost 6,000 years ago, communities used a cave in Spain as a burial place. AdvertisementAdvertisementScraping and cutting of these bones left traces "that can only be attributed to human action," Martínez Sánchez said. "The actions of fragmenting and manipulating the bones may well be related to specific ritual events performed inside the cave," Martínez Sánchez said. "They're often viewed as sort of passageways to another world to the ancestors, to other kinds of worlds that are seen as sacred liminal spaces, spaces that are somewhere in between the land and the living and the land of the ancestors," she said. There's a chance they may have disturbed the human remains as well.

Grab-N-Go, a drive-through and walk-up convenience store in New Iberia, La., has a central air-conditioning system, a window air-conditioning unit and two small, portable air-conditioners. Lately, brisk business could almost be considered a curse: Every time a customer arrived, Mr. Vitto had to slide open the window to take their order. The outside air — nearly 100 degrees but feeling even warmer — forced its way inside. “It’s a sticky, heavy heat,” Mr. Vitto said, disgust dripping from every drawn out syllable. It’s the moist, soupy, suffocating humidity that swallows up everything and conspires with the heat to make any activity without air-conditioning draining and even deadly.

Ever since Tyler Cestia left his son Thomas in his truck on a hot morning in June two years ago, he has felt, he said, like a cork bobbing in the ocean. At lunchtime, he drove to a restaurant with the auditor and then back to his office. That afternoon, it occurred to him that he didn’t remember seeing the babysitter that morning. He ran to his truck where he found Thomas in his car seat behind the driver’s seat. “It was just a total utter shock,” said Mr. Cestia, 37, who lives in New Iberia with his wife, Pam, and their two other children.

British Airlines will stop loading flights with meals for all passengers to reduce food waste. Last month the airline brought back free tea and coffee for passengers on short-haul flights. British Airways is trialing a new catering system where it won't load enough food for all passengers on a flight in a bid to tackle food waste. This included scrapping free beverages for passengers on its short-haul economy flights, the Sunday Times reported. Last month it started giving passengers free tea and coffee again on its short-haul routes.

IAG's quarterly profit beat analyst forecasts by 40% and the British Airways parent company said the outlook for summer travel was encouraging, although it warned it was "mindful" of uncertainty in the wider economy. IAG, which also owns Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, did not on Friday provide an update on its full-year guidance. It had said in May it expected annual profit above the top end of a 1.8 billion euros to 2.3 billion euros range. IAG said in its statement that while there was no sign of weakness in forward bookings it was "mindful of wider uncertainties that might affect the full year." For the three months to the end of June, the group recorded an operating profit before exceptional items of 1.25 billion euros ($1.37 billion), compared to the 895 million euros analysts were on average expecting.

But so far, IAG had not seen "any weakness into Q3 and Q4", finance chief Nicholas Cadbury added. In May, it said it expected annual profit above 2.3 billion euros ($2.5 billion), and analysts' consensus forecast stands at 2.8 billion euros. For the three months to the end of June, the group recorded an operating profit before exceptional items of 1.25 billion euros, compared to the 895 million euros analysts were on average expecting. "These numbers will help push expectations for this year strongly through the 3 billion euro operating profit level," Goodbody analysts said. These price caps in turn look set to result in widening power price discounts for consumers based in Spain and Portugal - known as Iberia - compared to Western European consumers, and may offer potential power price relief for industry. read moreSince then, the power price differences for Iberia-based consumers and those in Germany, Europe's largest power consumer, have been significant: Power prices in Spain for the second half of 2022 averaged less than half of those in Germany. For those firms, Spain and Portugal will likely emerge as potential locations for some production processes and operations, due mainly to lower energy costs. Spain and Portugal have not been entirely free from some power cost inflation even with the Iberian Exception. So far in 2023 Spain's power prices have averaged around 90% more than the average for 2018 through 2020.

Factbox: Europe's ongoing strike-related travel disruptions
  + stars: | 2023-07-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
The travel industry is on high alert for disruption after Europe's peak season last year was hit by cancellations, causing chaos at airports. This summer, air traffic control issues are likely to be the weak spot, according to warnings from Eurocontrol, which manages European airspace. Heathrow Airport security workers on June 23 called off 31 days of strikes planned at Britain's busiest hub. At Birmingham Airport, around 100 security officers and terminal technicians will begin continuous strike action from July 18. The strikes will severely impact the airport's security and terminal maintenance, leading to flight delays, the Unite union said.

Researchers said on Thursday an analysis of tooth enamel showed that the body entombed at the site near Seville was not a man as previously thought, a finding that indicates the leadership role women played in this ancient society that predated the pyramids of Egypt - and perhaps elsewhere. In the British Isles, it is the peak time of Stonehenge, a major megalithic monument and sanctuary," García Sanjuán said. The 'Ivory Lady' reflects all these elements," García Sanjuán said. "This study throws new light on a problem we know preciously little about: the social and political role of women among early complex pre-state societies," García Sanjuán said. The "Ivory Lady" shows that women may have held high leadership positions during the Copper Age, a transitional period between the Stone Age and the more technologically sophisticated Bronze Age.

The 29 billion euro Italian insurer on Thursday agreed to purchase Liberty Seguros, a group of European businesses, from U.S. insurer Liberty Mutual for 2.3 billion euros in cash. The Italian insurer’s largest acquisition since 2013 nearly exhausts its M&A firepower, which the group had assessed at between 2.5 billion euros and 3 billion euros. At 2.3 billion euros, or nearly two times its 1.2 billion euros of annual revenue, Liberty Seguros’ price tag does not look cheap. But the real price falls to 1.8 billion euros after factoring in around 500 million euros of cash expected from a sale of Brazilian assets announced earlier this year. Assuming three-quarters of these are cost cuts, they may be worth around 800 million euros once taxed at 25% and capitalised.

The children of a woman who died in a Louisiana Arby's earlier this month are suing for negligence. The lawsuit claims Nguyet Le died because a broken freezer latch caused her to be locked inside while alone in the restaurant. The suit also alleges multiple managers were aware the latch had been broken for at least nine months before Le's death. Employees allegedly used a screwdriver to get the door open, and often propped the door open with a box so the freezer, kept at -10 degrees Fahrenheit or below per company policy, didn't close all the way, according to court documents. Le's children are seeking at least $1 million in damages, claiming Arby's and the franchisees were negligent in failing to inspect and repair the broken freezer latch for at least nine months.

What's more, there appears to be growing demand for the luxury end of the spectrum. Portugal registered more than 2.8 million of foreign visitors from January to March, the best first quarter on record, according to official data. Airlines such as Lufthansa, easyJet and Ryanair have confirmed robust summer bookings while Ryanair, in anticipation of strong demand, has just ordered 150 new 737 Max-10s and optioned another 150. Italian travel and tourism company Alpitour forecasts turnover 30% higher this year. "We already see a very strong demand to book Christmas holidays in 2023.
A woman's body was found in a freezer at an Arby's in Louisiana Thursday evening. Hughes confirmed that the New Iberia Police Department would release an announcement with more information on the investigation later on Friday. British Airways-owner IAG sees travel rebound lifting forecasts
  + stars: | 2023-05-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, May 5 (Reuters) - British Airways-owner IAG (ICAG.L) said strong ticket sales for summer travel and a winter season which beat expectations meant 2023 profit would come in above its previous forecasts. IAG's positive outlook is in line with Europe's major airlines. Lufthansa, easyJet and Ryanair have all pointed to robust summer bookings, showing consumers prioritising travel spend despite high inflation and an uncertain economic outlook. Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA) on Friday reported better-than-expected first-quarter revenue and said it was seeing strong summer ticket sales. It posted an operating profit before exceptional items of 9 million euros, well above the 179 million euro loss expected by analysts.
