Shares of iRobot , the maker of Roomba vacuums, closed up about 39% Friday after a report said the European Union is set to approve Amazon's $1.7 billion acquisition of the company. Reuters said Thursday morning the deal is set to "win unconditional EU antitrust approval," citing three sources familiar with the matter. The European Commission is expected to rule on the deal by Feb. 14. Representatives from the European Commission didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. The acquisition marks Amazon's fourth-largest deal, behind its $13.7 billion purchase of grocery chain Whole Foods in 2017, its $8.45 billion purchase of film studio MGM in 2021 and its $3.9 billion acquisition of boutique primary-care provider One Medical, announced last July.

EU regulators set new Feb 14 deadline on Amazon/iRobot deal
  + stars: | 2023-10-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Oct 30 (Reuters) - European Union (EU) antitrust regulators will decide by February 14 next year on whether to clear Amazon's (AMZN.O) $1.4 billion acquisition of robot vacuum maker iRobot (IRBT.O), according to a regulatory filing. In August, the EU's competition enforcer temporarily halted its investigation into the deal while it awaited more information. Its previous deadline for its decision on the deal was December 13. The EU's competition watchdog has previously warned Amazon that the deal may reduce competition in robot vacuum cleaners and also reinforce the U.S. company's dominant position as an online marketplace provider. In July, Amazon cut the price it would pay for iRobot by about 15% to around $1.42 billion after iRobot, which makes Roomba vacuum cleaners, incurred more debt.

While we've been sharing the very best Prime Day deals throughout the sale, there are some great finds our editors recommend snagging right now. William Antonelli, tech reporterAmazonI'm taking this Prime Day to upgrade some of the old gadgets I've got in my house. I go through many shoes when training for marathons, and Prime Day is when I pick up a new pair or two. Last Prime Day, I purchased the Asics Men's Gel-Nimbus 24 Running Shoes. These Prime Day deals most certainly took a bite out of my wallet, but at a fraction of the price you'd normally pay for these items.

However, the fall Prime event might have better prices for home goods. In fact, the best prices happened on days that were not key shopping event days. Regardless, the July Prime event offered a deeper discount to shoppers when compared to last year's October Prime sale and Super Saturday. The product did go on sale during last October's Prime member event and this past July's Prime sale, but the discounts were not as deep. Downloads of Amazon's shopping app have declined steadily during each subsequent Prime member shopping event since Amazon's Prime Days in July 2021, according to data intelligence platform Apptopia, which tracks mobile app usage for brands like Amazon.

"Once the missing information is supplied by the parties, the clock is re-started and the deadline for the Commission's decision is then adjusted accordingly." July 25 (Reuters) - Amazon.com (AMZN.O) has slashed the price it will pay for iRobot (IRBT.O) by about 15% to around $1.42 billion after the maker of Roomba vacuum cleaners incurred fresh debt, the companies said on Tuesday. Under the amended deal, Amazon will pay $51.75 in cash for each share of iRobot, compared with the original price of $61.00. The deal price change will be largely offset by the planned increase in iRobot's net debt after it entered a $200 million financing facility to fund its operations, the companies said. "We've reached an amended agreement with Amazon that reflects the incurrence of iRobot's new debt," said Colin Angle, chairman and CEO of iRobot. Amazon and iRobot said on Tuesday they were working with the relevant regulators in their review of the merger.

Amazon is rolling out its palm payment technology to every Whole Foods store in the US. Privacy advocates say the way that Amazon collects and keeps palm data raises concerns. The tech giant will roll out Amazon One across over 500 Whole Foods stores by the end of 2023, it said in a blog post. Amazon's technology links a user's credit card or other payment information to their unique palm print. Besides Whole Foods, Amazon has also used the technology at its Amazon Go convenience stores.

Vestager said she accepted Scott Morton's decision to quit with regret but economists warned that the debacle will leave the bloc's competition commissioner weakened. Vestager should have been more transparent on possible conflicts of interest, said EU lawmaker Paul Tang from the Netherlands. That didn't help the candidature of Scott Morton," he said. Vestager's defence of her choice at a hearing on Tuesday was disappointing, said EU lawmaker and French lawyer Stephanie Yon-Courtin, who opposed Scott Morton's appointment. The issue with this nomination was neither American nor French, it is a matter of European interest," she said.

BRUSSELS, July 19 (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators have extended their deadline for a decision on Amazon's (AMZN.O) $1.7 billion acquisition of robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot (IRBT.O) to Dec. 13 after the companies requested more time. To receive the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, companies will have to follow cybersecurity standards set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), such as requiring strong passwords and software updates. Other agencies across the executive branch also plan to get involved in making connected devices more secure, according to the announcement. For example, the Department of Energy will collaborate with National Labs and industry to create cybersecurity labeling standards for smart meters and power inverters. And the Department of State plans to engage allies in syncing up cybersecurity labeling standards and creating international recognition of such labels. Once completed, the FCC could choose to use the standards to apply the new label to these products as well.
