Alphabet to report third-quarter earnings after the bell
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( Jennifer Elias | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Alphabet is set to report third-quarter earnings after the bell Tuesday. During the third quarter, Google made focused layoffs in various business organizations within the company. In the latest quarter, Google reshuffled its smart assistant that included layoffs as part of an effort to "supercharge" products with AI. Earlier this month, product managers and designers for Google's ChatGPT competitor Bard were reportedly skeptical about the tool's helpfulness. Along with the changes in its business, Google has seen a dramatic shake-up in its upper ranks.

Microsoft just shut down Project Airsim, its AI-based drone simulation software that was part of its vision for an "industrial metaverse," Insider has learned. Both projects were considered part of Microsoft's "industrial metaverse." Project Airsim was originally launched as an open-source project in 2017, though it later shifted focus into a product for industrial customers. Microsoft kept Project Airsim around because it believed there were large prospective customers for the product, the person said. Gurdeep Pall, previously head of product incubations and business AI who at one point ran Project Bonsai and most recently ran Project Airsim, left last month after 33 years with the company.

PWC Aussie mess is classic do as I say not as I do
  + stars: | 2023-09-29 | by ( Antony Currie | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
MELBOURNE, Sept 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - PWC Australia is likely to need a long time to recover from what is turning out to be a self-inflicted double whammy. Now the independent review sparked by the furore has laid bare another problem: PWC Australia took a do as I say not as I do approach to running its own shop. The report, commissioned by PWCA in May, written by one of the country’s corporate grandees, Ziggy Switkowski, and published on Wednesday, outlines a series of corporate governance failures. What’s worse, and even more ironic, is PWC Australia’s aversion to tapping external advice. Many of the changes will come from applying, “to the extent feasible”, the Australian Securities Exchange’s corporate governance principles and recommendations.

CNN —The Kristen Welker era of “Meet the Press” is off to a bleak start. Unfortunately, Welker failed spectacularly to meet the moment during her interview with Trump. Welker allowed Trump to make a number of statements wholly untethered to reality on a range of critical issues without tenacious, resolute, or meaningful pushback. CNN —China appears to have suspended its surveillance balloon program following a major diplomatic incident earlier this year, when one of the country’s high-altitude spy balloons transited the United States, multiple sources familiar with US intelligence assessments told CNN. The apparent suspension of the program comes as both the US and China have sought to stabilize an increasingly tense relationship. The US assessed at the time that the spy balloon was part of an extensive surveillance program run by the Chinese military, CNN has previously reported. “We believe that (the balloon) did not collect while it was transiting the United States or flying over the United States, and certainly the efforts that we made contributed,” Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. The more sensitive radar systems led the US military to spot more unidentified objects in US airspace, however, leading to three additional shootdowns of unidentified high-altitude objects in the weeks following the Chinese balloon incident.

Cramer warns Wall Street's AI craze may be peaking
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday suggested that Wall Street's artificial intelligence craze may be reaching its peak. Cramer wondered if AI is having a GoPro moment as he compared companies touting AI offerings to the action camera fad years ago. But he questioned companies advertising AI directly to the consumer, cautioning investors that many may be hyping AI to raise their stock's valuation. According to Cramer, AI is intended to save businesses money, not serve individual consumers. "Unless there's a return on investment that's tangible and visible, generative AI may not be all that valuable," he said.

The think tank accused India of bringing geopolitical "private goods" onto the global stage, which it said would not only help the country to fulfill its responsibility as the host of G20 but also create further problems. India held two earlier G20 meetings in disputed territories -- one in Arunachal Pradesh that China also claims, and another in Kashmir, contested by Pakistan. the think tank said in a commentary published on its Wechat account. TAIPEI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - A U.S. and a Canadian warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, the U.S. Navy said, marking the second such joint mission since June and coinciding with the leaders of both countries attending the G20 summit in India. "Ralph Johnson and Ottawa's bilateral transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the commitment of the United States and our allies and partners to a free and open Indo-Pacific," the U.S. Navy added in a statement. China's military condemned the transit as is usual with such missions, accusing the ships of carrying out "public hyping" in the strait, which separates Chinese-claimed Taiwan from China. Taiwan's defence ministry said the ships sailed in a southerly direction and that it had observed nothing unusual. While U.S. warships transit the strait around once a month, it is unusual for them to do so with those of other allies.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Friday to discuss grain ahead of the Erdogan meeting. "It turned out that it is more difficult to do this than to build new corridors, new ground routes," said Shoigu, who attended the signing ceremony for the Black Sea deal in Istanbul in 2022. Turkey's foreign minister said at a briefing in Moscow on Thursday that reviving the deal was important for the world. U.S. wheat prices rose on Friday, though Lavrov said on Thursday that Russia saw no sign that it would receive the guarantees needed to revive the grain deal. Lavrov said he had discussed Putin's initiative to supply up to 1 million tonnes of Russian grain to Turkey at reduced prices for subsequent processing at Turkish plants and shipping to countries most in need.

Kathleen Magramo/CNNHours before China’s announcement, the Asian financial center of Hong Kong – a semi-autonomous Chinese city – imposed its own ban on aquatic product imports from 10 Japanese regions including Tokyo and Fukushima. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reportedly “strongly” requested via diplomatic channels that China “immediately overturn” the ban. Still, Fei too thought that the bans from China and Hong Kong would have limited impact on Japanese trade. Tensions have soared between the two neighbours over the South China Sea under Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, with Manila pivoting back to the United States, which supports the Southeast Asian nation in its maritime disputes with China. TOKYO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The Japan opening of the hit film "Barbie" was dealt additional setbacks as an online petition gained steam calling on Hollywood studios to disavow a grassroots marketing movement that made light of nuclear holocaust. But fans were not amused in Japan, which in coming days will mark the memorials of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 78 years ago.
