Summer hiring is on the rise in several industries, says Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, as consumer appetite for traveling and dining out remains "stronger than expected" despite recession fears. In June, private sector jobs surged by 497,000, well ahead of the 220,000 Dow Jones estimate, payroll processing firm ADP reported Thursday. If you're looking for a low-stress gig that pays at least $20 an hour — and don't mind spending your shift outdoors, or at a museum — there are several summer jobs you may want to consider. Plus, according to Indeed, many of these jobs pay upwards of $22 an hour. There is "good news for both inflation and growth," Evercore ISI Chair Ed Hyman said in a client note Tuesday. Fed officials already had been largely discounting shelter prices that they expect to recede through the year. Core services inflation "is likely to slow significantly for the rest of this year and next," Hyman wrote. To be sure, inflation is likely to remain a problem ahead, and Fed officials have stated multiple times that the current level is too high . Both increases "should also be an important reminder to markets and Fed officials," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote Wednesday.

New York CNN —Netflix shareholders voted on Thursday to reject multi-million dollar pay packages for the company’s top executives including for co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters. Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty ImagesNetflix’s proposed executive pay packages for 2023 included up to $40 million for Sarandos, including base salary, a performance bonus and stock options. Netflix’s board, meanwhile, is able to disregard the results of this “say on pay” vote and approve executive compensation plans in spite of shareholder wishes. The board has already unanimously recommended voting for the pay packages. Last year, just 27% of Netflix shareholders approved of 2022 executive compensation packages.

A recession is coming this summer and will last until mid-2024, Evercore chairman Ed Hyman said. "I've never forecast a recession this far in advance," he said in an interview with Bloomberg. Signs of trouble brewing in the economy suggest a recession will unfold this summer and last through mid-next year, according to Evercore chairman Ed Hyman. But if we're tightening and other central banks are tightening, it makes our tightening much more aggressive on the economy," he added. "I've never forecast a recession this far in advance," he said, suggesting that the Fed didn't need to keep rates at the current level.
Why bank stocks are so unstable

New York CNN —The financial sector has been churning in rough water since the shocking collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in March. Bank insiders see this and have been buying up shares of regional lenders, according to a report by Timothy Coffey, an analyst at Janney Montgomery Scott. The Oracle of Omaha said he remains cautious about holding bank stocks and that he has reduced his own exposure to the sector. The S&P 500 financial sector, however, is down more than 12% over the same period. Economists were hoping that this year would bring better news, but instead 2023 brought the collapse of three US regional banks and a subsequent lending squeeze.

Florida got goals from Tkachuk and Sam Bennett, with the goal by Bennett Florida's first successful power play of the series. Despite all the dazzling digital advances, the trillions of dollars spent on computer technology have done almost nothing to make the world a more productive place. The economist Robert Solow, who identified this problem, called it the productivity paradox. In 1987, a decade into the computer revolution, he observed that productivity growth had actually slowed down. The digital era has made a lot of everyday work more complicated and less efficient than it was 30 years ago. A steam engine, for example, would have been no use to textile manufacturing if textile workers had remained a scattered network of independent farmers, as opposed to a group of employees gathered under a single factory roof.
I started renting used clothes in January, saving me an average of $53 per month so far. Balancing my vanity with an awareness that I needed to budget more effectively, I started renting clothes from Nuuly — a sister company to Urban Outfitters — in January. It hasn't curbed my shopping habits as much as I predicted, but it has saved me money: I spend $53 less per month, on average. But I didn't start renting clothes for my self-esteem. Why I'll keep renting clothes — but not forever
A flawed but useful economic model for a bleak age

Modern Monetary Theory, which endorses unlimited government spending, was all the rage during the years of ultra-low interest rates. John Cochrane’s fiscal theory fits the bill. Cochrane, a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, recently published “The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level”. Not only are high interest rates incapable of arresting inflation, fiscal theory suggests they actually make the problem worse. Nor do bondholders operate with rational expectations, as fiscal theory suggests.
Rent the Runway's decision to give customers more clothes for the same price has been a win-win. Plus, free clothes are a relatively affordable way to gain customers, CEO Jennifer Hyman told Bloomberg at the time. Plus, Rent the Runway isn't spending on buying or housing extra inventory to support the extra items, CFO Scarlett Brillet O'Sullivan said during the call. Going head-to-head with fast fashionA Rent the Runway customer carries one of the company's clothing bags in New York City. Hyman said Wednesday that the majority of RTR subscribers pay $144 for its mid-tier membership of two shipments of clothing per month.
The Federal Reserve should halt its interest rate hiking campaign because the U.S. economy is already poised for a recession, said economist Ed Hyman, chairman of Evercore ISI. Hyman said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" that he was in the "recession camp," but did not expect a sharp downturn. Hyman specifically pointed to an inverted yield curve and contracting money supply as signs that a recession is likely on the horizon. The central bank implemented a quarter-percentage point rate hike at its March meeting, marking its ninth straight rate increase . As for the future of the economy, Hyman said he's "seen enough" to make his prediction for a recession: "I know where this boat is going."
Rent the Runway's losses narrowed in its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings reported Wednesday as the digital retailer continues to streamline its costs and work towards profitability. For the full year, the company expects revenue in the range of $320 million to $330 million. Active subscribers excludes those with paused memberships. At the end of the fiscal year, Rent the Runway had 126,712 active subscribers, a 10% increase compared to the year-ago period. The company expects its active subscriber count to grow by more than 25% in the next fiscal year.

A thank you note takes less than five minutes to write, yet "surprisingly few" applicants do it, says Jeff Hyman, an executive recruiter of 26 years. Throughout his career, Hyman has interviewed more than 35,000 job candidates, and estimates he has received a thank you note from less than 20% of the people he spoke with. 1 mistake job seekers can make, says ZipRecruiter CEO Ian Siegel, because it signals to a hiring manager that you aren't really interested in the role. It's also a chance to show off your soft skills, like communication and creativity, which companies are "increasingly prioritizing in their hiring," Siegel adds. Here are some essential do's and don'ts for writing the perfect thank you email, according to Siegel and Hyman:
